Redefining Leadership: Kamala Harris and the Future of American Politics

New York, N.Y. We find ourselves reflecting on the remarkable journey of Kamala Harris, a figure who has become synonymous with resilience, intellect, and transformative leadership. As the presumptive Democratic candidate for President of the United States, current Vice President, and former Senator from California, Harris stands at the forefront of American politics, embodying a vision of progress and inclusivity.

Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, to immigrant parents—an Indian mother and a Jamaican father—who instilled in her a deep sense of justice and a commitment to public service. Her life’s work has been a testament to these values, navigating the often treacherous waters of American politics with grace and determination.

As we reflect on her career, it’s impossible to ignore the vitriol and baseless attacks she has faced, particularly from political opponents who have reductively labeled her a “DEI” (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) candidate. This label, often used in a derogatory manner, seeks to undermine her extensive qualifications and reduce her candidacy to mere identity politics. Such tactics are not only misleading but are also a reflection of the systemic racism that continues to pervade our society.

Harris’s qualifications are extensive and diverse.

She served as the District Attorney of San Francisco and later as the Attorney General of California, the nation’s largest state. In these roles, she established herself as a tough but fair prosecutor, championing issues such as criminal justice reform, the rights of the disenfranchised, and environmental justice. Her tenure in the U.S. Senate further solidified her reputation as a thoughtful and effective legislator, where she was a vocal advocate for healthcare reform, immigration policy, and civil rights.

The moniker of “DEI candidate” is not just inaccurate; it is a disservice to the breadth of Harris’s experience and accomplishments. It is a dismissive tactic aimed at delegitimizing her candidacy by reducing it to a check on a diversity box rather than a reflection of her substantive policy positions and leadership skills. This framing ignores the reality that Harris has earned her place through hard work, strategic acumen, and a deep understanding of the complexities of governance.

We must challenge this narrative and instead focus on Harris’s vision for America—one that includes all voices and seeks to rectify the inequalities that have long plagued our nation. Her policies are not born out of identity politics but are grounded in a comprehensive approach to governance that prioritizes the welfare of all Americans. This includes her commitment to healthcare as a human right, her push for climate action, and her advocacy for economic policies that uplift the middle and working classes.

Harris’s candidacy is particularly significant at a time when the U.S. grapples with its identity and future direction.

The “Make America Great Again” rhetoric that has dominated the past years often harks back to an idealized version of the past, one that excludes the diversity that is America’s greatest strength. In contrast, Harris’s vision is forward-looking, inclusive, and grounded in the reality of our diverse society.

As thought leaders and global citizens, we believe it is crucial to support leaders like Kamala Harris who are not afraid to confront the challenges of our time. Her stance on issues such as racial injustice, women’s rights, and international diplomacy reflects a nuanced understanding of both domestic and global complexities. She is not just a symbol of progress but an active participant in shaping a better future for all.

In embracing Kamala Harris’s candidacy, we are not merely supporting a political figure but are endorsing a broader vision of what America can and should be. Her leadership style—marked by empathy, intelligence, and resilience—offers a hopeful contrast to the divisiveness that has characterized much of our recent political discourse. We are reminded of the power of representation, not as an end in itself but as a means to ensure that all voices are heard and valued.

As we move towards the future, let us echo the call to “Make Racism Wrong Again,” a phrase that encapsulates the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. Harris’s journey, from her early days in Oakland to her historic run for the presidency, is a testament to the progress we have made and the work that still lies ahead.

65 and Fearless: Riding the Classics at Luna Park, Coney Island

Brooklyn, New York. For my 65th birthday, my partner Bix Luce took me to Luna Park at Coney Island, a place steeped in history and nostalgia. The day was perfect for an adventure, filled with the thrill of rides and the joy of classic amusement park treats.

The author on his 65th birthday, July 24, 2024 an the Boardwalk at Coney Island, NYC.

We started with the Atlantic Aviator, a ride known for its exhilarating aerial spins and views of the iconic Coney Island shoreline. This ride, relatively new compared to others, captures the spirit of modern amusement park thrills.

Bix and Jim Luce enjoying a summer day at Luna Park in Coney Island, Brooklyn, NYC.

Next, we couldn’t resist the legendary Cyclone roller coaster. Built in 1927, the Cyclone is one of the oldest wooden roller coasters still in operation and has been declared a New York City landmark.

The ride’s classic wooden structure and tight turns offer a nostalgic experience, reminding riders of the golden age of amusement parks, echoing the thrills of the past with each creak and sway of its wooden tracks.

As we zoomed down its drops, I could almost hear the echoes of Coney Island’s past, from the laughter of early 20th-century beachgoers to the iconic sounds of the boardwalk.

After catching our breath, we decided to tackle the Thunderbolt, a steel roller coaster named after another historic ride that once stood in Luna Park.

The original Thunderbolt, a beloved wooden coaster that graced Coney Island from 1925 until 2000, was immortalized in the Woody Allen film “Annie Hall.”

The modern Thunderbolt offers a unique blend of history and innovation, with its loops, corkscrews, and heart-pounding drops, symbolizing the rebirth of Coney Island as a hub of amusement and adventure.

Built in 1927, the Cyclone has been declared a New York City landmark.

To top off our day, we indulged in
some traditional Coney Island fare.

We savored cold Mermaid Pilsner beer, Coca Cola, Nathan’s hotdogs and Auntie Anne’s pretzels, enjoying the simple pleasure of a meal by the sea.

Nathan’s Famous, established in 1916, is synonymous with Coney Island and has become a staple of American pop culture, especially with its annual hot dog eating contest.

And, of course, no trip to Coney Island would be complete without soft ice cream for dessert, a sweet ending to a perfect day.

As we sat on a bench, enjoying our treats and watching the sun set over the Atlantic, we reflected on the enduring charm of Coney Island.

From its heyday in the early 1900s, as depicted in “Little Fugitive,” to its appearances in shows like “The Warriors” and “Mr. Robot,” Coney Island has been a symbol of fun, escape, and the timeless joy of summer days spent by the sea.

At 65, I felt a renewed sense of adventure and a connection to the countless stories and memories that have made Coney Island a cherished landmark for generations.

Discovering Paris: Dos & Don’ts from a Once-Local’s Perspective

With its rich history, beautiful architecture, and vibrant culture, Paris is a city that captivates visitors. By following these dos and don’ts, you can enhance your experience, avoid common pitfalls, and immerse yourself in the true essence of Parisian life. Enjoy your journey in one of the world’s most enchanting cities!

New York, N.Y. As a child, I lived in Paris with my family while my father, on sabbatical, worked at the Sorbonne, the UniversitĂ© de Paris. This experience gave me a unique perspective on the city, which I have revisited many times since, usually for just a few days. With the Olympics approaching, I want to share my experiences to help fellow travelers avoid common pitfalls and enjoy the city without being perceived as “ugly” tourists. Here’s a guide to the essential dos and don’ts for your Parisian adventure.

Dos

  1. Do Greet People Properly
In Paris, as in the rest of France, a polite greeting is essential. Always start interactions with “Bonjour” (good day) or “Bonsoir” (good evening) and a smile. This simple gesture of politeness, which I learned early on, can make a significant difference in your interactions with locals.
  2. Do Learn Basic French Phrases
While many Parisians speak English, especially in tourist areas, making an effort to speak a few French phrases is appreciated. My childhood experiences taught me that phrases like “Merci” (thank you), “S’il vous plaĂźt” (please), and “Excusez-moi” (excuse me) show respect for the local culture and can enhance your experience.
  3. Do Explore Beyond the Tourist Spots
While the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Museum, and Notre-Dame are must-see landmarks, my fondest memories are from exploring lesser-known neighborhoods like Le Marais, Montmartre, and Canal Saint-Martin. These areas offer a more authentic experience of Parisian life and often have unique shops, cafés, and street art.
  4. Do Try the Local Cuisine
Paris is a food lover’s paradise, offering everything from world-class pastries to exquisite gourmet dishes. Be adventurous and try local specialties like escargot, coq au vin, or a classic croissant from a local boulangerie. Don’t forget to savor a leisurely meal at a traditional French bistro, a tradition I cherished with my family.
  5. Do Use Public Transportation
Paris has an excellent public transportation system, including the metro, buses, and trams. It’s efficient, affordable, and the best way to get around the city. Consider purchasing a multi-day metro pass if you plan on using public transit frequently, just as my family did during our stay.

Don’ts

  1. Don’t Assume Everyone Speaks English
Although English is widely spoken in tourist areas, not everyone is fluent. Speaking slowly, using simple language, and learning a few French words can help bridge the communication gap and show respect, as I learned firsthand during my time at the Sorbonne.
  2. Don’t Rush Your Meals
In Paris, dining is an experience to be savored. Meals are often leisurely, and it’s common to spend several hours enjoying dinner with multiple courses. Avoid rushing through meals and instead take the time to enjoy the food and atmosphere, a habit my family adopted during our stay.
  3. Don’t Touch the Produce in Markets
When visiting local markets, it’s customary to let the vendor handle the produce. Touching fruits and vegetables is considered impolite, so always ask the vendor to help you with your selection, a lesson my parents taught me early on.
  4. Don’t Expect Fast Service
Service in French restaurants can be slower than what some travelers might be used to, as dining is meant to be a relaxed experience. Be patient, and if you need something, politely signal to your waiter. Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; a small amount or rounding up the bill is common practice.
  5. Don’t Forget About Cultural Norms
Parisian culture values discretion and subtlety. Avoid loud conversations, especially on public transportation or in restaurants. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and always ask for permission before taking photos of people or inside certain places, like museums or shops.

Uneducated White Men: Understanding Trump’s Appeal

Economic Anxiety and Cultural Identity:
Driving Forces Behind Uneducated White Men’s Support for Trump

New York, N.Y. The 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections brought to light a notable trend: significant support for Donald Trump among white men without a college degree. This demographic, often referred to in media and political analysis, played a crucial role in Trump’s electoral success. Understanding the factors behind this support requires examining economic, cultural, and social dynamics.

Economic Concerns and Disillusionment

A key factor driving support for Trump among uneducated white men is economic anxiety. Many in this group have faced job losses or wage stagnation due to globalization and technological changes that have transformed industries traditionally employing non-college-educated workers. Manufacturing, once a cornerstone of stable, well-paying jobs, has seen a decline, leaving many workers feeling left behind.

Trump’s promise to “bring back jobs” and his criticism of trade deals resonated with these voters. They perceived his policies as a potential solution to their economic struggles, viewing him as a champion of the working class. This perception was bolstered by Trump’s populist rhetoric, which often targeted elites and the establishment, whom many blame for their economic woes.

Cultural Identity and Nostalgia

Cultural factors also play a significant role. Many uneducated white men see Trump’s emphasis on traditional values and American identity as aligning with their own beliefs. This demographic often feels marginalized by what they perceive as a rapidly changing cultural landscape that does not reflect their values or experiences.

The rise of so-called ‘political correctness’ and identity politics has led some in this group to feel alienated. Trump’s disregard for political correctness and his often provocative statements are seen as refreshing candor, a departure from what they view as overly cautious or insincere political discourse. This has cultivated a strong sense of loyalty and identification with Trump, who they believe speaks to their concerns and fears of cultural displacement. Trump encourages racism.

Media Influence and Information Ecosystems

The media landscape, particularly the prevalence of conservative media outlets and social media, has reinforced and amplified Trump’s support among uneducated white men. Conservative media usually frames Trump’s actions and policies in a favorable light, emphasizing narratives of economic revival and cultural restoration. Social media platforms further amplify these messages, creating echo chambers where Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric resonates strongly.

The role of misinformation cannot be ignored, as it has contributed to shaping perceptions and reinforcing biases. Many supporters are skeptical of mainstream media, viewing it as biased or untrustworthy, which leads them to seek alternative sources of information that align with their worldview.

The Future of Political Engagement

Understanding the support for Trump among uneducated white men is crucial for addressing the broader challenges of political polarization and social division. Efforts to bridge these divides must consider the underlying economic and cultural concerns driving this demographic’s political choices.

Policymakers and community leaders need to engage with these voters, addressing their economic insecurities and cultural fears without resorting to divisive rhetoric, which admittedly is difficult. Initiatives focused on job retraining, educational opportunities, and community-building can help create pathways for economic and social inclusion.

The support of uneducated white men for Trump is a multifaceted issue rooted in economic, cultural, and media influences. Addressing these challenges requires a nuanced understanding of their experiences and concerns, moving beyond simplistic narratives to foster a more inclusive and cohesive society.

UNICEF Chief Calls for Urgent Security Reset in Gaza Amid ‘New Horrors’

“We see children who withstood previous injuries only to be hurt again. Doctors and nurses with no resources, struggling to save lives. Thousands of boys and girls sick, hungry, injured, or separated from their families,” she said. “The violence and deprivation are leaving permanent scars on their vulnerable bodies and minds. And now, with a breakdown in sanitation and sewage treatment, the polio virus joins the list of threats, especially for the thousands of unvaccinated children.”

New York, N.Y. The head of the U.N. Children’s Fund (UNICEF) appealed on Wednesday for an immediate improvement in the security situation in Gaza, where dangerous operating conditions and attacks against humanitarian workers continue to hamper aid delivery to communities in need.

“Simply put – we do not have the necessary conditions in the Gaza Strip for a robust humanitarian response,” UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement issued in the wake of an attack on one of the agency’s vehicles and the latest Israeli evacuation order in Khan Younis.

Children suffer ‘permanent scars’

Ms. Russell began by highlighting the dire conditions in Gaza, where â€œwith each passing week, families face new horrors”

She said devastating attacks on schools and sites housing displaced people continue, reportedly killing hundreds more Palestinians and further straining the already overburdened hospitals in the enclave.

Humanitarian situation ‘beyond catastrophic’

Meanwhile, “as families are repeatedly forced to move to escape the immediate violence, the humanitarian situation is beyond catastrophic,” she said.

Although UNICEF and other humanitarian agencies are doing everything they can to respond, “the dire situation and attacks against humanitarian personnel continue to obstruct our efforts.”

On Tuesday, a clearly-marked UNICEF vehicle was hit by bullets while waiting at a designated holding point near the Wadi Gaza checkpoint.  It was one of two vehicles that were going to collect five young children and reunite them with their father after their mother was killed.

“Fortunately, no one was injured, and the team managed to reunite the family,” she said. “Yet in this incident, like others before it, the humanitarian consequences could have been horrific.”

Safe, unimpeded aid access

Stating that the conditions in Gaza do not support a robust humanitarian response, she said that â€œthe flow of aid must be unimpeded and access must be regular and safe.”

For nearly nine months, aid has trickled in, civilians have been deprived of supplies, and the commercial sector has been decimated, she said.

The result has been growing competition for the little that is available, smuggling of goods into Gaza, and the increasingly organized looting of aid supplies which  “not only impedes our efforts to reach vulnerable families but puts our teams and the civilians we are supporting at risk.”

At least 278 aid workers killed

The situation is exacerbated by the operating conditions on the ground, she continued, noting that at least 278 aid workers have already been killed to date – a record number – while others are put in harm’s way or prevented from doing their jobs.

“We need an immediate improved security environment, including security for aid delivery trucks, to allow aid workers to safely reach the communities they intend to serve,” Ms. Russell said.

“Most critically, we need an immediate and sustainable ceasefire.”

The UNICEF chief called on all parties to the conflict to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law, and to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.

“It is long past time for this crisis to end, for hostages to be returned to their families and for the children of Gaza to have a healthy and secure future,” she said.

15 seriously ill children to receive urgent care in Spain

Fifteen children from Gaza with complicated medical conditions arrived in Spain on Wednesday through an evacuation process involving the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners.

The mother of one of the children will also receive treatment.

The patients had been in hospital in Egypt for the past several months, after evacuating from Gaza. They represent but a small portion of the thousands who need access to special medical care outside of the enclave.

Care and cooperation

“These very sick children will be getting the care they need thanks to cooperation between several partners and countries,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General.

While expressing gratitude to Egypt and Spain for their support and facilitation, he urged other countries “who have the capacity and medical facilities to welcome people who, through no fault of their own, are caught in the grips of this war.”

The children range between the ages of three and 17 years. Thirteen have complex injuries, one has a chronic heart condition, and one is living with cancer. They are being accompanied by 25 family members and other caregivers.

The youngsters have been in Egypt since before 6 May, after which evacuations became almost impossible with the closure of the Rafah crossing. Since then, only 23 people have been evacuated via the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Thousands still waiting

WHO noted that roughly 5,000 people have been evacuated for treatment outside Gaza since last October. The majority, over 80 per cent, are receiving care in Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Another 10,000 Gazans still need to be evacuated.

Given the situation, the children “are just the tip of the iceberg”, said Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean.

“Patients who need evacuation outside of the Gaza Strip must be able to exit, preferably to the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, but also to Egypt or Jordan and then onwards,” she added.

Wednesday’s evacuation was supported through the European Union (EU) Civil Protection Mechanism in partnership with WHO.

The Palestine Children’s Relief Fund facilitated the patients’ documentation, the Government of Egypt supported their care while there, and similar support is being provided by Spain, where the children will be treated at various hospitals across the country.

Democrats Boycott, Protests Erupt: Netanyahu in D.C.

0

Washington, D.C. The nation’s capital was a scene of tension and protest today as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived for a scheduled presentation before the U.S. Congress. The visit, marked by controversy and widespread opposition, coincided with heightened U.S. security assistance to Israel, which has totaled $6.5 billion since the October 7 attack.

Netanyahu, a polarizing figure on the international stage, especially due to his government’s policies towards Palestinians, was recently condemned by a United Nations tribunal as an international criminal for alleged war crimes. This backdrop added gravity to his visit, eliciting strong reactions from both political figures and the public.

In a significant move, many Democratic lawmakers, including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, boycotted Netanyahu’s presentation. They cited objections to his policies and the timing of the visit, viewing it as an affront to diplomatic norms and a distraction from pressing domestic issues. Vice President Kamala Harris, a key Democratic figure and the presumptive candidate for President, was notably absent, continuing her campaign trail across key states. She has been advocating for a more balanced and just U.S. foreign policy stance in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, thousands of demonstrators gathered in Washington, D.C., to protest Netanyahu’s presence in the U.S. They marched near Capitol Hill, holding signs and chanting slogans condemning the Israeli leader’s policies and calling for justice and peace. The protests were largely peaceful but underscored deep divisions within American society over U.S. support for Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, tensions flared when police used pepper spray on the crowd to maintain order.

In a dramatic and unprecedented move, Congressman Greg Casar (D-TX), a progressive member of Congress, announced a desire to serve Netanyahu with an arrest warrant on the floor of Congress. The warrant, based on findings by the International Criminal Court, was intended to highlight the lack of accountability for alleged crimes. While the legal and diplomatic complexities of such an action are significant, the gesture underscored a growing willingness among some U.S. lawmakers to take bold stances on international human rights issues.

Netanyahu’s visit, initially intended to strengthen ties and reaffirm bilateral cooperation, instead highlighted the deepening rifts within American politics regarding U.S.-Israel relations. The widespread boycotts, public demonstrations, and legal threats reflected a shifting landscape where traditional alliances and diplomatic norms are increasingly scrutinized through the lens of human rights and international law.

During Netanyahu’s speech, progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the first Palestinian woman to serve in Congress, held up a small black-and-white sign labeling Netanyahu as a “War criminal” and accusing him of “Genocide.” Netanyahu responded dismissively, referring to the protesters as Iran‘s “useful idiots.”

As the day unfolded, the capital remained on high alert, with heightened security around key government buildings and protest sites. The broader implications of this visit are yet to be seen, but it undoubtedly marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over foreign policy and international justice.

The Hottest Day on Record: Wake-Up Call for Our Baking Planet

Understanding Causes, Consequences of Hottest Day Ever Recorded

New York, N.Y. The scorching sun beat down relentlessly, shattering previous records and marking a grim milestone in our planet’s ongoing climate crisis. On this day, Monday, July 22, 2024, temperatures soared to unprecedented levels, with cities across the globe experiencing the hottest day ever recorded. This event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for global action to combat climate change.

A Global Phenomenon

The heatwave that led to this record-breaking day was not confined to one region. From North America to Europe, Asia to Africa, nations reported soaring temperatures. In the United States, cities like Phoenix and Las Vegas reached temperatures well above 110°F (43°C), while in Europe, parts of Spain and Italy saw thermometers climb past 40°C (104°F). Even typically temperate regions, such as the UK and Scandinavia, experienced sweltering heat. Our school in Bihar, India closed due to the excessive heat – as did many other schools across South and Southeast Asia.

This widespread phenomenon is a clear indication of the changing climate patterns that scientists have warned about for decades. The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves are linked to human-induced climate change, primarily driven by the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These activities increase greenhouse gas emissions, trapping more heat in the Earth’s atmosphere and leading to rising global temperatures.

The Impact on Daily Life

The effects of the hottest day on record were immediate and far-reaching. In urban areas, where concrete and asphalt exacerbate heat conditions, hospitals reported a surge in cases of heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration. Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions, were particularly at risk.

Infrastructure struggled to cope with the extreme temperatures. Power grids were strained as air conditioning use spiked, leading to blackouts in some areas. In others, roads buckled under the heat, and public transportation systems faced delays due to equipment malfunctions. The agricultural sector also suffered, with crops wilting in the fields and livestock at risk from the heat.

A heatwave can be defined as a period where local excess heat accumulates over a sequence of unusually hot days and nights. Heatwaves amplify many risks, such as health-related or economic risks, including increased human mortality, drought and water quality, wildfire and smoke, power shortages and agricultural losses.

A Call to Action

The hottest day on record is more than just a weather anomaly; it is a call to action. Scientists warn that if current trends continue, such extreme weather events will become more common and severe, with devastating consequences for ecosystems, economies, and human health.

Addressing this crisis requires a concerted global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition to sustainable energy sources. Governments, businesses, and individuals all have a role to play. Policies promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency, and sustainable land use are crucial. At the same time, communities need to be better prepared to cope with the impacts of extreme heat, including improving urban planning, expanding green spaces, and enhancing public health systems.

The Role of Public Awareness and Engagement

Raising awareness about the realities of climate change is essential. The media plays a critical role in conveying the seriousness of the situation and the need for immediate action. Education systems should incorporate climate science into curricula to equip future generations with the knowledge they need to address this challenge.

Individuals can also make a difference by adopting more sustainable lifestyles. Simple actions like reducing energy consumption, using public transportation, and supporting environmentally responsible companies can collectively have a significant impact.

The record-breaking heatwave serves as stark reminder of our urgent need to address climate change

It highlights the vulnerabilities of our current systems and the dire consequences of inaction. As we face an increasingly uncertain future, the choices we make today will determine the world we leave for future generations. It is imperative that we rise to the challenge, embracing innovation, cooperation, and a shared commitment to protecting our planet.

Brooklyn-born Jewish Lawyer Advocating Importance of Mental Health Care and the Need to Destigmatize Mental illness

New York, N.Y. As the political landscape evolves, so too do the roles and figures that populate it. If Kamala Harris were to ascend to the presidency, her husband, Doug Emhoff, would make history as the first “Second Gentleman” of the United States. This unprecedented position would offer Emhoff a unique platform to support the administration, advocate for important causes, and redefine the role of a presidential spouse in the 21st century.

Who is Doug Emhoff?

Doug Emhoff is an accomplished lawyer with a distinguished career spanning over 25 years. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Emhoff grew up in a middle-class family, eventually earning his law degree from the USC Gould School of Law. He built a successful career in entertainment and media law, serving as a partner at several prestigious law firms and representing high-profile clients.

Emhoff’s life took a significant turn when he met Kamala Harris on a blind date in 2013. The couple married a year later, and Emhoff became an integral part of Harris’s personal and political life, supporting her through her campaigns for California Attorney General, U.S. Senator, and ultimately, Vice President.

The Role of the Second Gentleman

If Kamala Harris becomes president, Doug Emhoff would assume the role of First Gentleman, a position with no formal job description but substantial symbolic importance. This role traditionally involves supporting the president, participating in public engagements, and championing specific causes. Emhoff’s professional background, personal interests, and prior experiences suggest he would bring a distinctive approach to this role.

Advocating for Justice and Equality

Given Emhoff’s legal background, it is likely he would focus on issues related to justice and equality. Throughout his career, Emhoff has been involved in various pro bono efforts and has shown a commitment to social justice. As Second Gentleman, he could leverage his expertise to advocate for legal reforms, promote equal access to justice, and support initiatives aimed at combating systemic racism and discrimination.

Championing Mental Health and Wellness

Emhoff has also expressed a deep interest in mental health and wellness. During the 2020 presidential campaign, he frequently highlighted the importance of mental health care and the need to destigmatize mental illness. As Second Gentleman, Emhoff could use his platform to raise awareness about mental health issues, support policies that increase access to mental health services, and work with organizations dedicated to improving mental health outcomes.

Promoting Education and Community Service

Education and community service are other areas where Emhoff could make a significant impact. He has often spoken about the importance of giving back to the community and the transformative power of education. By supporting educational initiatives, promoting volunteerism, and encouraging civic engagement, Emhoff could help foster a more informed and active citizenry.

Redefining the Role of a Presidential Spouse

Doug Emhoff’s potential role as Second Gentleman also represents a broader cultural shift in how we view the spouses of political leaders. Traditionally, the role of the presidential spouse has been associated with women, with First Ladies taking on various ceremonial and advocacy roles. Emhoff’s presence would challenge traditional gender norms and offer a new model for how men can support their partners in positions of power.

His experience balancing a successful career with his responsibilities as a supportive spouse to a high-profile politician provides a modern example of partnership and equality. Emhoff’s approach to the role could inspire other men to take on more active and supportive roles in their personal and professional lives.

The Importance of Representation

Emhoff’s potential role as Second Gentleman is also significant in terms of representation. As the first Jewish spouse of a president or vice president, Emhoff brings a diverse perspective to the White House. His background and experiences add to the rich tapestry of American leadership, reflecting the nation’s diverse population.

Representation matters, and Emhoff’s visibility as a supportive spouse and advocate for important causes could inspire others from diverse backgrounds to pursue public service and leadership roles. His presence in the White House would send a powerful message about the importance of inclusivity and the value of diverse voices in shaping the nation’s future.

Doug Emhoff’s potential role as the first Second Gentleman of the United States offers an exciting opportunity to redefine the role of a presidential spouse. With his legal expertise, commitment to social justice, and passion for mental health and education, Emhoff is well-positioned to make a meaningful impact. As he supports Kamala Harris in her historic presidency, Emhoff’s contributions could help shape a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society.

Quest for Relevance: Kennedy, Manchin Bolster Trump

The political landscape is been peppered with figures like Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Joe Manchin, whose actions have raised eyebrows and concerns within the anti-Trump movement. White male rage? These men, operating on the fringes of mainstream politics, have demonstrated a penchant for attention-grabbing maneuvers that seem to stem more from ego than genuine political conviction

New York, N.Y. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., scion of a political dynasty, has launched an independent presidential bid that many view as quixotic at best. His campaign, fueled by conspiracy theories and anti-vaccine rhetoric, appears to be more about personal validation than substantive policy. Similarly, Joe Manchin, the former Democrat turned independent, has repeatedly positioned himself as a political maverick, often at the expense of his former party’s agenda.

While their efforts might seem comical on the surface, the potential for real damage to the anti-Trump movement is significant. By siphoning votes and attention away from more viable candidates, these fringe actors risk fragmenting the opposition to Trump’s potential return to power. Manchin’s recent call for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race, for instance, has added unnecessary turbulence to an already challenging political climate.

The irony is that these men, in their quest for relevance, may inadvertently bolster the very forces they claim to oppose. Their brittle egos and need for the spotlight could ultimately undermine the cohesion needed to present a united front against Trump’s divisive politics. The political landscape has been peppered with figures like Robert F. Mark Cuban: Maverick Investor for Social Justice

Cuban’s Jewish identity has also informed his views on anti-Semitism and Israel. He has been an outspoken opponent of anti-Semitism and a supporter of Israel, frequently using his platform to speak out against hate and advocate for peace and security in the region.

New York, N.Y. Mark Cuban is a name synonymous with entrepreneurial success, innovation, and an unabashed approach to business and life. Known for his role as the outspoken owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and a prominent investor on the television show “Shark Tank,” Cuban’s journey from modest beginnings to billionaire status is a testament to his relentless drive and savvy business acumen. Integral to his identity are his Jewish roots, which have significantly influenced his values, work ethic, and philanthropic endeavors.

Early Life and Jewish Heritage

Mark Cuban was born on July 31, 1958, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to a working-class Jewish family. His grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Russia who fled persecution and sought a better life in America. His father, Norton Cuban, worked in the automobile upholstery business, while his mother, Shirley, held various odd jobs.

Growing up in a Jewish household in the suburb of Mount Lebanon, Cuban was instilled with the values of hard work, education, and community. These principles were reinforced through his involvement in Jewish cultural and religious activities. Cuban’s upbringing was deeply influenced by the Jewish tradition of questioning and learning, which fostered his inquisitive nature and entrepreneurial spirit.

Entrepreneurial Beginnings

Cuban’s entrepreneurial journey began at a young age. At 12, he sold garbage bags door-to-door to earn money for basketball shoes, demonstrating early on his knack for identifying opportunities and his willingness to work hard. This drive continued through his teenage years, with ventures such as selling stamps and coins and hosting dance parties.

Cuban attended the University of Pittsburgh for a year before transferring to Indiana University, where he studied at the Kelley School of Business. His choice was influenced by the affordability of the school and its strong reputation. During his time at Indiana University, Cuban’s entrepreneurial spirit flourished; he ran a bar, gave dance lessons, and started a chain letter business.

The Path to Billionaire Status

After graduating in 1981, Cuban moved to Dallas, Texas, where he initially worked as a bartender and then as a salesperson at a software company. He was fired after a disagreement with his boss, but this setback became a turning point. Cuban founded MicroSolutions, a software company that he built into a successful enterprise before selling it to CompuServe for $6 million in 1990.

Cuban’s biggest financial breakthrough came with his next venture, Broadcast.com. In 1995, he co-founded the company, which specialized in internet radio and online broadcasting. In 1999, Yahoo! acquired Broadcast.com for $5.7 billion in stock, catapulting Cuban into the billionaire ranks.

Dallas Mavericks and “Shark Tank”

In 2000, Mark Cuban purchased the Dallas Mavericks for $285 million. Under his ownership, the Mavericks transformed from a struggling franchise into NBA champions, winning their first title in 2011. Cuban’s hands-on approach and passion for the game, combined with his willingness to invest in cutting-edge technology and facilities, revitalized the team and its fanbase.

Cuban’s visibility and reputation as a savvy investor further expanded with his role on “Shark Tank,” a reality TV show where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel of investors. Cuban’s blunt feedback, keen business insights, and significant investments have made him a central figure on the show since he joined in 2011.

Philanthropy and Advocacy

Mark Cuban’s Jewish heritage has profoundly influenced his philanthropic endeavors and advocacy. He has made substantial donations to various causes, particularly those supporting education, health care, and Jewish communities. In 2003, he and his wife, Tiffany, established the Mark Cuban Foundation, which focuses on initiatives that promote health, education, and community services.

Cuban is also a vocal advocate for social justice and equality. He has supported numerous programs aimed at reducing poverty, improving access to education, and enhancing healthcare services. His commitment to giving back reflects the Jewish value of “tikkun olam,” or repairing the world, which emphasizes the importance of contributing to the betterment of society.

Political and Social Views

Cuban’s outspokenness extends beyond the business realm into political and social issues. He has been a critic of both major political parties in the U.S., advocating for pragmatic and innovative solutions over partisan politics. While he has flirted with the idea of running for public office, Cuban has remained focused on using his influence to drive change from the private sector.

Mark Cuban’s journey from the streets of Pittsburgh to the pinnacle of business success is a story of relentless ambition, innovative thinking, and a deep-seated commitment to his values.

As an entrepreneur, investor, and philanthropist, Cuban continues to inspire countless individuals with his bold approach to business and his dedication to making a positive impact on the world. His story is not just one of financial success but also of the enduring influence of family, heritage, and a commitment to the greater good.

Moscow Effect: Draft Comes to Europe, Preparing for WW III

The rising threat of a wider war with Russia, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and aggressive posturing from Moscow, has prompted several countries to revive or strengthen mandatory military service.

New York, N.Y. As the geopolitical landscape in Europe becomes increasingly volatile, many European nations are reconsidering the role of conscription in their defense strategies. The rising threat of a wider war with Russia, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and aggressive posturing from Moscow, has prompted several countries to revive or strengthen mandatory military service. This move marks a significant shift in defense policies that had largely moved away from conscription in favor of professional volunteer forces.

The Historical Context of Conscription in Europe

Conscription, or mandatory military service, has deep roots in European history. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, conscription was a common practice across the continent, driven by the need to maintain large standing armies. However, the end of the Cold War and the perceived reduction in direct military threats led many European countries to phase out or significantly reduce conscription, opting instead for professional volunteer forces that were seen as more efficient and cost-effective.

The Resurgence of Conscription

The resurgence of conscription in Europe is largely a response to the evolving security environment. The annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, followed by its support for separatist movements in eastern Ukraine, alarmed many European countries. The full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 further underscored the threat posed by Russia and highlighted the need for robust defense capabilities.

Sweden and Finland: Reinstating Conscription

Sweden and Finland, both non-NATO members at the time of the initial Ukraine crisis, were among the first to reinstate conscription. Sweden reintroduced conscription in 2017, citing the deteriorating security situation in the Baltic region. Finland, which had maintained a conscription system but with reduced service periods, also began to strengthen its defense posture. The subsequent NATO membership of these countries has further solidified their commitment to a strong defense strategy, with conscription playing a crucial role.

Baltic States: Reinforcing Military Readiness

The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have been particularly proactive in maintaining and enhancing their conscription systems. Given their geographic proximity to Russia and historical experiences of Soviet occupation, these countries have always viewed a robust military capability as essential to their sovereignty. Estonia, for example, has one of the highest rates of military participation per capita in Europe, with a well-established conscription system complemented by a strong reserve force.

Germany: A Landmark Policy Shift

Germany’s decision to debate the reintroduction of conscription represents one of the most significant shifts in European defense policy. Germany ended conscription in 2011, transitioning to a professional army. However, the increasing threat from Russia and growing pressure from NATO allies have sparked discussions about bringing back mandatory service. The German government has initiated a series of studies and public consultations to assess the feasibility and necessity of conscription in the current security context.

Strategic and Social Implications

The reintroduction of conscription carries both strategic and social implications. On the strategic front, conscription can significantly increase the size of a nation’s armed forces, providing a larger pool of trained personnel who can be rapidly mobilized in times of crisis. This is particularly important for smaller countries that might struggle to maintain large professional armies due to budgetary constraints.

Conscription also fosters a sense of national unity and shared responsibility for defense. In countries like Finland and Estonia, mandatory military service is seen as a rite of passage and a key component of national identity. This societal buy-in can enhance the overall resilience and preparedness of the nation.

However, there are also challenges associated with conscription. Modern military operations require highly specialized skills and training, and conscript forces may not always meet these demands as effectively as professional soldiers. Additionally, conscription can be politically contentious, with debates about fairness, social equity, and the impact on young people’s careers and education.

The Future of European Defense

As Europe grapples with the growing threat from Russia, the debate over conscription is likely to intensify. For many countries, a hybrid approach that combines a core of professional soldiers with a robust system of conscription and reserves may offer the most effective solution. This model allows for rapid scaling of military capabilities while maintaining the expertise and readiness of a professional force.

In conclusion, the resurgence of conscription in Europe reflects a broader shift in defense strategies in response to an increasingly uncertain security environment. As the threat of a wider war with Russia looms, European nations are taking bold steps to ensure their defense capabilities are robust and adaptable. The reintroduction of conscription is a testament to the enduring importance of national defense and the willingness of European societies to adapt to new challenges.

The Convergence of Two Paths

Both were members of a Black intellectual study group, later known as the Afro-American Association, which hosted discussions on African history and the African American experience. This group played a significant role in shaping their worldviews and fostering their commitment to social justice.

Defining Leadership: Prosecutor vs. Felon Battle for White House

0

This election is more than just a political contest; it is a defining moment for our nation and our place in the world. As we consider the prosecutor and the felon, let us strive to understand the lessons their lives teach us about justice, leadership, and the pursuit of a better future for all.

New York, N.Y. We stand at a pivotal moment in American history, observing the unfolding drama of a presidential election that pits a prosecutor against a felon. The stakes are high, and the choices stark, as we consider the implications of this race on our democracy, justice system, and global standing.

Let us delve into the lives and careers of these two candidates who represent vastly different visions for the future of our nation. Our purpose here is not to critique but to understand the significance of their journeys and the values they embody as thought leaders and global citizens.

The Prosecutor: A Career Rooted in Justice

The prosecutor, born on February 20, 1964, in New York, has dedicated their life to upholding the law and ensuring justice. Their career began in the district attorney’s office, where they quickly gained a reputation for their unwavering commitment to fairness and integrity. Over the years, they have tackled some of the most challenging cases, fighting against corruption, organized crime, and civil rights violations.

Their dedication to justice is not merely professional; it is deeply personal. They have consistently advocated for reforms to the criminal justice system, recognizing its flaws and working tirelessly to address them. Their efforts have led to significant changes, including the implementation of policies aimed at reducing wrongful convictions and promoting rehabilitation over punishment.

As a thought leader, the prosecutor has spoken extensively about the need for a more equitable society. They have used their platform to highlight issues such as racial injustice, economic disparity, and the importance of education. Their vision is one of inclusivity and fairness, where every individual has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.

The Felon: A Story of Controversy and Resilience

On the other side of the spectrum, we have the felon—a figure shrouded in controversy but also resilience. Their journey is one marked by significant achievements and equally significant downfalls. Born into a family of wealth and privilege, they leveraged their resources to build a vast business empire. Their rise to prominence in the business world was meteoric, characterized by bold ventures and a knack for self-promotion.

However, their career has also been marred by legal troubles. Accusations of fraud, corruption, and other crimes have dogged them for years, leading to high-profile court cases and convictions. Despite these setbacks, they have remained a formidable force in the political arena, galvanizing a substantial following with their unorthodox approach and populist rhetoric.

As a global citizen, the felon’s impact cannot be ignored. Their business ventures have spanned continents, creating jobs and opportunities worldwide. Yet, their methods and ethics have often been questioned, raising debates about the true cost of their success. Their story is one of contradictions—a blend of ambition, controversy, and an unwavering drive to stay relevant.

The Intersection of Justice and Leadership

In examining these two figures, we see a microcosm of the broader challenges facing our society. The prosecutor represents the ideals of justice, equity, and systemic reform. Their career is a testament to the belief that the law should be a force for good, protecting the vulnerable and holding the powerful accountable.

The felon, meanwhile, embodies the complexities of leadership in a globalized world. Their actions and decisions have far-reaching consequences, both positive and negative. Their resilience in the face of adversity speaks to a certain kind of strength, albeit one that comes with significant ethical considerations.

As global citizens, we must grapple with the implications of this election. It is a contest that forces us to reflect on our values and the kind of leadership we desire. Do we prioritize justice, fairness, and systemic reform? Or do we value resilience, ambition, and the ability to navigate complex global landscapes, even at the cost of ethical compromises?

This election is more than just a political contest; it is a defining moment for our nation and our place in the world. As we consider the prosecutor and the felon, let us strive to understand the lessons their lives teach us about justice, leadership, and the pursuit of a better future for all.

Jamaican Youth Strikes Out in America, Looks for Advice

0

New York, N.Y. I woke up this morning to the following message: “Blessings, Sir Jim! This is William from the University of the West Indies (in Jamaica). I have been living here in Mississippi since 2021 under some friends’ advice. However, my situation has changed dramatically in ways I never perceived could happen. The friends that told me to come and stay with them turned out to not have my best interest at heart. It took me two years to find that out. Since last October I’ve been trying to figure things myself, which has been tremendously hard for me. I have been in so much debt financially because I wasn’t working for a period. In January I had two speeding tickets I was unable to pay, and they placed me on a payment plan. However, I missed my payment and the court date and thus a bench warrant was issued for me. On June 30, police came to my apartment and arrested me. They didn’t inform they had a warrant out for me. Instead, they immediately preceded to trash my apartment looking for weed, that they didn’t find. They eventually brought me in to the police station and held me for a night. I paid my bond in the morning and the case was dismissed. However, they called ICE on me and now I have a date to meet with them on August 7th. At this point Sir Luce, I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to be deported back to Jamaica. I have no home, nor no avenue to start over. I’m reaching out because you are the only person I think may be able to give me advice on going forward.”

After a cup of coffee and some reflection, I responded: “William, I am glad to hear from you but saddened by the circumstances. You are a fine, upstanding young man and it sounds like you have managed to get yourself into some trouble.

First, I am not an attorney and I believe your best bet is to contact your local immigration agency or legal aid office and request legal assistance.

It sounds like you have overstayed in the U.S. with what perhaps is a tourist visa? If that is the case, I am unsure why you never perceived bad things could happen. I am sorry to hear your friends turned out to not have your best interests at heart. I have lived overseas in many different countries and if it weren’t for friends around the world, I would never have survived. I can only imagine the pain and difficulty if they turned out unhelpful.

America seems to be the land of opportunity from afar, but life here for newly arrived immigrants can be very difficult. Many Americans live but one paycheck away from being evicted, so I understand how ‘not working for a period’ could really mess up your finances. Wow, that’s rough. And then two speeding tickets? William, that’s not cool. Yes, if you miss your payments in that situation, you will have a serious problem – as you discovered.

Okay, so the cops came, saw nothing but a Jamaican man and assumed you had weed. They trashed your place, which sadly I believe they are allowed to if they ‘suspect illegal activity.’ They took you to the police station and held you overnight. How frightening – but at least you now have an interesting story to tell. You then paid a bond in the morning and ‘got-out-of-jail,’ the case was dismissed.

However, they called ICE – Immigration and Customs Enforcement– on you and you received a ‘Call in Letter’ from Homeland Security for August 7th. So now, as you know, this is very serious.

William, you have to think about what you really want at this point your life? Do you really not want to go back to Jamaica? I think you are right, they hope to deport you, although again, I am not an attorney and am not giving you advice, just looking at the situation.

It seems you have several options: You can return to Kingston on your own before the meeting. Or you could go to the meeting and see what happens, with deportation the probable outcome.

Other people might go underground, say to a Jamaican-rich place like Brooklyn or Florida, or go somewhere with no Jamaicans at all, off the radar. Say, New Hampshire, or Idaho. I am not suggesting that, but others might.

At any rate, William, I am so sorry to hear of your challenges in our country and wish there was something I could do to assist you. Sadly, there is not much of anything I can do to help. I do, however, wish you the best if luck on whatever path you may travel. Stay in touch. – Jim”

In 2022, The U.S. Homeland Security deported 1.2 million non-citizens from the United States.

Why Pete Buttigieg Should Be Kamala Harris’s V.P. Pick

0

As the Democratic National Convention approaches, the prospect of Vice President Kamala Harris stepping into the role of President looms large. This transition would necessitate a new vice presidential candidate who not only complements Harris but also brings a unique set of skills and perspectives to the administration.

New York, N.Y. Among the potential candidates, Pete Buttigieg stands out as the ideal choice.

Experience and Competence

Pete Buttigieg, currently serving as the Secretary of Transportation, has demonstrated an exceptional capacity for leadership and governance. His tenure as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, showcased his ability to revitalize a struggling Rust Belt city, turning it into a hub of innovation and growth. His pragmatic approach to urban development, infrastructure, and economic revitalization are exactly the skills needed to address the nation’s ongoing infrastructure challenges. His work at the Department of Transportation, managing a historic infrastructure bill, has further solidified his reputation as a competent and effective leader.

Appeal to Younger Voters

Buttigieg’s youth and fresh perspective are assets that could significantly bolster the Democratic ticket. At 42, he represents a new generation of leaders, bridging the gap between seasoned politicians and younger voters who are looking for dynamic, forward-thinking candidates. His candidacy would energize younger voters, a demographic that has shown increasing political engagement but often feels disconnected from the more traditional political figures.

Inclusivity and Representation

As an openly gay man, Buttigieg’s presence on the ticket would signal a powerful commitment to diversity and inclusion. His candidacy would be historic, continuing the Democratic Party’s tradition of breaking barriers and promoting equality. Buttigieg’s personal story and his advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights resonate with many Americans who seek a government that represents and fights for all its citizens.

Policy Expertise and Vision

Buttigieg’s intellectual rigor and policy expertise are evident in his thoughtful and detailed policy proposals. During his 2020 presidential campaign, he laid out comprehensive plans on issues ranging from healthcare and climate change to economic reform and national security. His ability to articulate a clear vision for the future, grounded in progressive yet pragmatic solutions, makes him a strong asset to Harris. Together, they could form a partnership that balances progressive ideals with practical governance.

Strategic Electoral Advantages

Geographically, Buttigieg’s Midwestern roots provide strategic electoral advantages. The Midwest remains a critical battleground in presidential elections. His deep understanding of the region’s economic and social challenges would be instrumental in winning over voters in states that are often pivotal to electoral success. His Midwestern appeal, combined with Harris’s strengths on the coasts, could create a geographically balanced ticket that resonates with a broad spectrum of voters.

Conclusion

In a time of significant political and social challenges, the Democratic Party needs a vice-presidential candidate who embodies competence, vision, and the ability to inspire and unify. Pete Buttigieg is that candidate. His diverse experiences, policy acumen, and ability to connect with a wide range of voters make him the ideal running mate for Kamala Harris. Together, they can lead the nation towards a more inclusive, prosperous, and forward-thinking future.

Trump Survives Assassination Attempt at Pennsylvania Rally

Washington, D.C. — Former President Donald Trump survived a deadly assassination attempt while speaking at a campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired eight rounds from an AR-15–style rifle from the roof of a nearby building, striking Trump in the upper right ear.

The attack also killed one rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, and critically injured two others. Crooks was killed by the U.S. Secret Service Counter Sniper Team shortly after opening fire.

The shooting occurred at approximately 6:11 p.m. local time at the Butler Farm Show Grounds.

Crooks had purchased a ladder earlier that day but ultimately climbed an air-conditioning unit and traversed interconnected roofs to reach his firing position about 400 to 450 feet from the stage. Despite the presence of three police snipers assigned to the rally, none were positioned on the roof Crooks occupied, partly due to personnel shortages and obstructed views caused by trees and the roof’s slope. Several bystanders spotted Crooks on the roof and alerted police minutes before the shooting.

A local law enforcement officer first reported the presence of a person on the roof at 6:08 p.m., prompting a search operation.

During this, Crooks aimed his rifle at an officer attempting to climb the roof, causing the officer to fall and injure his ankle. About 40 seconds later, Crooks opened fire on the rally crowd. A member of the Butler County Emergency Services Unit shot at Crooks and hit his rifle, preventing further shots. The Secret Service then fatally shot Crooks.

The FBI is leading the ongoing investigation, treating the incident as both an assassination attempt and an act of domestic terrorism. Explosives were found at Crooks’s home and in his vehicle. Analysis of his electronic devices revealed searches related to Trump, other political figures, dates of rallies, and historical assassination details, including the distance of Lee Harvey Oswald from President John F. Kennedy during his assassination. Investigators also noted Crooks flew a drone near the rally site two hours before the attack19.

A congressional task force led by Pennsylvania Representative Mike Kelly released a report highlighting security failures that contributed to the attack. The report criticized law enforcement for failing to secure the building Crooks used, inadequate communication among agencies, insufficient Secret Service manpower, and failure to block clear lines of sight to Trump from outside the rally perimeter.

Trump was quickly surrounded by Secret Service agents
after being shot and was treated for his wound.

The attack left seven injured in total, including three from gunfire and four officers hurt by debris. The rally was immediately halted, and Trump was transported to a hospital for treatment.

This assassination attempt is one of several security incidents involving Donald Trump throughout his political career. It has intensified scrutiny on the protection measures for high-profile political figures and raised concerns about domestic terrorism threats in the United States.

Life of Aristides de Sousa Mendes: An Example For Us All

“I would rather stand with God against Man than with Man against God.”

New York, N.Y. Secretary-General AntĂłnio Guterres heralded the opening of a new museum in central Portugal on Friday which honors the extraordinary life of a man who showed “immense bravery” helping thousands of refugees escape the Nazi regime during World War Two.

“Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a beacon of courage, compassion, and conviction in a world of total moral collapse,” said Mr. Guterres in a video message to inaugurate the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Museum in the town of Carregal do Sal.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese diplomat based in Bordeaux, France, who defied his own Government’s orders to stamp passports and visas that allowed thousands to flee on to Portugal.

Safe passage

A Portuguese visa allowed them safe passage through Spain, which was officially neutral. However, the infamous Portuguese ‘Circular 14’ directive instructed diplomats to deny safe haven to refugees, explicitly Jews, Russians, and other stateless persons who could not return home.

As the Nazis quickly approached the Bordeaux consulate where Mendes was working, he faced a stark choice between following orders or saving lives. He chose the latter, declaring “I would rather stand with God against Man than with Man against God.”

‘Lives saved and lives lived’

Working day and night, Mendes established a rapid system to stamp and sign passports and issue thousands of lifesaving visas in June 1940.

“His legacy is lives saved and lives lived – including a young girl who, years later, would become the mother of my own Spokesperson at the United Nations,” said the U.N. chief, who served as Prime Minister of Portugal between 1995 and 2002.

Mr. Mendes was forced to pay for his heroism. Portuguese dictator AntĂłnio de Oliveira Salazar – who ruled the country for forty years up to 1968 – expelled him from the diplomatic corps without any pension, leaving him to die in poverty.

Thankfully, in the decades since, the magnitude and bravery of his actions have been gradually recognized, said the Secretary-General.

“This museum – in his ancestral home – is a critical part of those efforts,” Mr. Guterres stressed.

The memory of Mendes

The inauguration of the museum comes at a “vital time,” as the number of people forced to flee their homes has reached a record high and “hatred and intolerance are rife,” Mr. Guterres noted.

“We are at risk of forgetting our shared humanity,” he emphasis ed.

In this context, Mr. Guterres is calling on people everywhere to be inspired by the memory of Mr. Mendes and take courage from his bravery.

“Let us commit to defend human rights and dignity for all. And to stand up against discrimination, intolerance, and hate whenever and wherever they appear,” the Secretary-General said.

World Court: Israeli Occupation of Palestine ‘Unlawful’

The U.N. International Court of Justice concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and that it is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence “as rapidly as possible.” Israel is also “under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the opinion continued, as well as “reparation for the damage caused to all natural or legal persons concerned.”

New York, N.Y. The U.N. International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday declared that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory “is unlawful”, and that “all States are under an obligation not to recognize” the decades-long occupation.

The Court was responding to a request for an advisory opinion by the General Assembly on the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.

The advisory from the ICJ is a legal opinion provided by the Court on questions of international law.

Unlike judgments in contentious cases between States, advisory opinions are non-binding and are sought by United Nations bodies such as the General Assembly or the Security Council.

While not legally binding, advisory opinions can shape international policies, increase moral pressure, and unilateral measures adopted by individual States such as sanctions.

Israel’s obligations

In its advisory opinion, the ICJ concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and that it is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence “as rapidly as possible”.

Israel is also “under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the opinion continued, as well as “reparation for the damage caused to all natural or legal persons concerned”.

States’ obligations

It further stated that “all States are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence” of Israel.

States are also under the obligation to “not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.

International organizations’ obligations

For international organizations, including the UN, the Court noted the “obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence” of Israel.

The ICJ further noted that UN, and especially the General Assembly and the Security Council, “should consider the precise modalities and further action required to bring to an end as rapidly as possible the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

Call for engagement

Following the issuance of the opinion, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his call for the parties to re-engage on the “long-delayed political path” towards ending the occupation and resolving the conflict in line with international law, relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.

“The only viable path is the vision of two States – Israel and a fully independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian State – living side by side in peace and security within secure and recognized borders, on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both States,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

The statement also noted that the UN chief will promptly transmit the advisory opinion to the General Assembly, which had requested the Court’s advice.

“It is for the General Assembly to decide how to proceed in this matter,” the statement added.

Israel’s response

According to media reports, Israel’s Foreign Ministry rejected the ICJ’s opinion as “fundamentally wrong” and “blatantly one-sided”.

It also repeated its stance that a political settlement in the region can only be reached through “direct negotiations”.

General Assembly request

The General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2022, which among other points requested the ICJ to provide its opinion under Article 96 of the U.N. Charter and Article 65 of the Court’s Statute.

The opinion lays out the legal consequences of Israel’s “ongoing violation” of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, from its prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of territories occupied since 1967, and discriminatory measures, including those affecting Jerusalem’s demographic composition and status.

It also sought to understand how these policies and practices of Israel affect the legal status of the occupation and its legal consequences.

Examining Flaws in J.D. Vance’s Portrayal of Appalachian Culture

However, having grown up in Butler County, Ohio, and then moved to Washington County, Ohio, on the West Virginia border, I realize that Ohio has several dozen Appalachian counties. Butler County ain’t one of them. I do not understand how Hillbilly Elegy purports to describe an “Appalachian experience” that did not occur in Appalachia.

New York, N.Y. I was born just 14 miles from where J.D. Vance was born, in Hamilton, Ohio. Both Hamilton and Middletown are located in Butler County and are considered part of the Midwestern Rust Belt.

Hillbilly Elegy is a memoir by J.D. Vance that explores his upbringing in a working-class family in Middletown, Ohio, and the broader issues facing America’s white working class. Vance details the struggles of his family and community, including poverty, addiction, and a sense of hopelessness.

The book also aims to highlight the cultural and social challenges of Appalachia, offering a personal perspective on the economic and social decline in the Rust Belt and the difficulties of upward mobility.

Adding insult to injury with his so-called Appalachian narrative, Vance went on to study at Yale. My father studied at Yale, and I studied in Tokyo; there’s nothing wrong with that. However, we don’t tout our family as lower middle-class.

From his book, it is clear that Vance believes in limiting human rights in America, not expanding them. The only right he defends is the right to own a gun. He does not believe in the right to healthcare or marriage. Free speech only includes speech he agrees with. He believes ‘sexualized’ speech, including pornography, should be illegal. He suggests that a woman should not be able to leave a violent relationship as she is needed to stay home and take care of the children.

He opposes Ukraine defending itself against Russia’s brutal aggression. The people of Appalachia believe in fighting for one’s own home and family and would support their neighbor in doing the same.

Vance follows Mencius Moldbug on social media, an anti-democratic American blogger who is leading the anti-egalitarian philosophical movement known as Dark Enlightenment.

Finally, Vance is a convert to Catholicism. Roman Catholics make up less than 10% of Appalachia compared to almost a quarter of the population outside the region.

J.D. Vance in his book Hillbilly Elegy may describe his own Hand Maiden’s values, but not Appalachian values. Don’t insult Appalachia.

Dismantling White Privilege: Steps Towards Racial Equity

White privilege refers to the unearned advantages and benefits that white people receive in societies structured by racial hierarchies. These advantages can manifest in various forms, including social, economic, educational, and political realms. Unlike overt acts of racism, white privilege often operates subtly and unconsciously, making it all the more insidious and challenging to address.

New York, N.Y. As we navigate the complexities of modern society, one concept that demands our attention and understanding is white privilege. From our perspective as thought leaders and global citizens, it is imperative to critically examine the implications of white privilege, recognize its pervasive impact, and work towards dismantling the systemic inequalities that it perpetuates.

Understanding white privilege requires us to acknowledge the historical and structural foundations that have created and sustained racial disparities. The legacy of colonialism, slavery, segregation, and discriminatory policies has entrenched racial inequalities in many aspects of life. These historical injustices have not only disadvantaged people of color but also conferred systemic advantages to white individuals, often without their explicit awareness.

One of the most significant aspects of white privilege is the relative ease with which white individuals can navigate societal institutions. For example, in the realm of education, white students are more likely to attend well-funded schools, have access to advanced placement courses, and receive favorable treatment from educators. This educational privilege often translates into greater opportunities for higher education and career advancement, perpetuating a cycle of advantage.

In the workplace, white privilege manifests in hiring practices, promotions, and workplace culture.

White individuals are more likely to be hired for jobs, promoted to leadership positions, and receive higher salaries compared to their equally qualified peers of color. This professional privilege not only reinforces economic disparities but also perpetuates the underrepresentation of people of color in decision-making roles, limiting diverse perspectives in critical areas of influence.

White privilege also extends to everyday interactions and societal norms.

White individuals can generally expect to be treated with respect and presumption of innocence in various situations, from interactions with law enforcement to customer service encounters. They are less likely to experience racial profiling, discrimination, or microaggressions that people of color face regularly. This social privilege creates a sense of security and belonging that is often taken for granted.

Recognizing white privilege is not about assigning blame or guilt but about fostering awareness and responsibility. It requires us to reflect on our own experiences and understand how systemic advantages have shaped our lives. By acknowledging these privileges, we can become more empathetic and proactive in addressing the inequities that affect marginalized communities.

One way to address white privilege is through education and dialogue.

We must engage in honest conversations about race, privilege, and systemic inequality. This involves listening to the experiences of people of color, amplifying their voices, and challenging our own biases. Education systems must incorporate comprehensive curricula that highlight the historical and contemporary realities of racial injustice, promoting critical thinking and empathy among students.

Another crucial step is advocating for policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion. This includes supporting affirmative action, diversifying hiring practices, and implementing anti-discrimination policies in workplaces, schools, and other institutions. By creating more inclusive environments, we can help level the playing field and ensure that opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their racial background.

As individuals, we can also leverage our privilege to advocate for change.

This means using our platforms and influence to speak out against racial injustice, supporting organizations that work towards racial equity, and actively participating in movements that challenge systemic oppression. By taking a stand against racism and promoting inclusivity, we can contribute to building a more just and equitable society.

Reflecting on white privilege, we are reminded of the importance of humility and continuous learning. It is not enough to be passively non-racist; we must be actively anti-racist, committed to understanding and addressing the root causes of racial inequality. This journey requires us to confront uncomfortable truths, challenge our own assumptions, and remain steadfast in our pursuit of justice.

As we move forward, let us recognize that dismantling white privilege is not just the responsibility of those who are directly affected by racial injustice. It is a collective endeavor that requires the commitment and solidarity of all individuals who believe in the principles of equality and human dignity. By working together, we can create a world where privilege is not determined, in the words of Dr. King, by the color of one’s skin but by the content of one’s character.

A Stark Warning: MAGA and 1930s Nazi Conventions Parallels

When we compare the MAGA Republican conventions of today with the Nazi conventions of the 1930s, the resemblances are impossible to ignore. Through careful analysis, we see patterns of propaganda, cult-like fervor, and a dangerous narrative of nationalism that bears a chilling resemblance to the past.

New York, N.Y. As students of history and keen observers of current political climates, we recognize the weight of drawing parallels between different eras.

Yet, when we compare the MAGA Republican conventions of today with the Nazi conventions of the 1930s, the resemblances are impossible to ignore. Through careful analysis, we see patterns of propaganda, cult-like fervor, and a dangerous narrative of nationalism that bears a chilling resemblance to the past.

Having survived an assassination attempt, his evangelical supporters are more convinced he is “blessed by God,” reinforcing the messianic undertones of his populist presidential campaign. Trump and his campaign have infused his candidacy with Christian imagery, fostering a cult of personality with him as its leader, solely capable of saving an America he falsely portrays as crime-ridden and on the verge of collapse.

At the heart of these conventions is a potent form of propaganda designed to stir emotions, manipulate perceptions, and rally unwavering support. Just as the Nazi conventions utilized grandiose rallies, powerful imagery, and fervent speeches to create a sense of unity and purpose, MAGA conventions employ similar tactics. The stagecraft, from the selection of music to the orchestrated chants, is meticulously designed to evoke a strong emotional response, galvanizing the base in a manner reminiscent of the Nazi approach.

We observe that the cult of personality is another disturbing similarity. Adolf Hitler was portrayed as the savior of Germany, a figure above reproach whose vision would restore the nation’s former glory.

Likewise, the MAGA movement centers around the figure of Donald Trump, who is depicted as a near-messianic leader capable of single-handedly “Making America Great Again.” The fervent loyalty and uncritical adulation from supporters mirror the blind allegiance seen in Nazi Germany, where dissent was not tolerated and loyalty was absolute.

Nationalism is a central theme in both movements.

The Nazi conventions were rife with rhetoric about Aryan supremacy, the need to reclaim lost territory, and the vilification of perceived enemies. Today, MAGA conventions echo these sentiments through slogans and speeches that emphasize American exceptionalism, border security, and a fear of the “other,” whether it be immigrants, political opponents, or foreign adversaries. This “us versus them” mentality fosters division and promotes a dangerous form of nationalism that excludes rather than includes.

Moreover, the use of scapegoating as a political tool is eerily similar.

The Nazis blamed Jews, communists, and other minorities for Germany’s problems, creating a convenient enemy to unite against. In MAGA rhetoric, we hear echoes of this as immigrants, the media, and the political establishment are blamed for the country’s issues. This scapegoating serves to divert attention from complex issues and instead focuses anger and frustration on easily identifiable targets.

The atmosphere of fear and intimidation also draws a direct line between the two eras. Nazi conventions were characterized by a heavy police presence, intimidation of dissenters, and the suppression of opposing viewpoints.

Similarly, MAGA conventions often see heightened security, clashes with protestors, and a hostile environment for those who dare to voice dissenting opinions. This suppression of free speech and the intimidation of opposition are hallmarks of authoritarian regimes.

The survival of Donald Trump from an assassination attempt has stirred fervent discussions and interpretations, with some viewing it as the hand of God at play. While such interpretations can offer solace and hope to many, we believe they carry significant dangers that warrant a closer examination.

Firstly, attributing Trump’s survival to divine intervention risks elevating him to a quasi-messianic status. This perception can bolster the already strong cult of personality surrounding him, encouraging a sense of infallibility and divine purpose.

When a political figure is seen as chosen or protected by a higher power, their actions and decisions may be deemed beyond reproach or criticism. This can erode democratic principles, where leaders are accountable to the people and subject to scrutiny and checks and balances.

Historically, the deification of political leaders has led to dangerous consequences.

Leaders perceived as divinely chosen often garner unchecked power and authority, as their followers believe they are enacting a higher will.

This was evident in the cases of numerous historical figures who used religious fervor to justify autocratic rule and suppress opposition. The danger lies in the potential for Trump to exploit this perception, intentionally or not, to consolidate power and diminish democratic norms.

Interpreting Trump’s survival as divine intervention will only deepen existing political and social divisions. Those who view the event as the hand of God may feel validated in their beliefs and become more entrenched in their support, while those who do not share this view may feel alienated or marginalized.

This can exacerbate the already polarized political climate, making constructive dialogue and compromise even more difficult. A society divided along such deeply ingrained beliefs can struggle to find common ground, which is essential for the healthy functioning of a democracy.

From a broader perspective, the intertwining of religion and politics poses significant challenges to secular governance. When political events are framed in religious terms, policy decisions may be influenced by religious beliefs rather than empirical evidence and reasoned debate

As thought leaders and global citizens, we feel a deep responsibility to highlight these parallels.

The lessons of history are clear: unchecked nationalism, the cult of personality, and the suppression of dissent can lead to devastating consequences. By drawing attention to these similarities, we hope to foster a greater awareness and a more critical examination of current political movements.

We are not suggesting that the MAGA movement is identical to the Nazi regime. The contexts and outcomes are different. However, the warning signs are there, and it is incumbent upon us to recognize and address them before they can escalate further. History has shown us the dangers of ignoring these patterns, and it is our duty to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

In understanding these parallels, we can work towards promoting a political environment based on inclusion, reasoned discourse, and a rejection of fear-mongering tactics. By doing so, we uphold the values of democracy and protect the freedoms that are the bedrock of our society.

Russian Plot Against Defense CEO Reported; Berlin Undaunted

0

Berlin, Germany. The German government has announced that it “won’t be intimidated” by Russian attempts to undermine its support for Ukraine. However, officials declined to comment on a report alleging that Moscow planned to assassinate the CEO of a leading defense company.

According to a CNN report on Thursday, citing five unidentified U.S. and Western officials, U.S. intelligence discovered earlier this year that Russia intended to kill Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. The report stated that the United States informed Germany, whose security services successfully protected Papperger and thwarted the plot. Rheinmetall is a major supplier of military technology and artillery rounds to Ukraine.

Both Rheinmetall and the German government have refrained from commenting on the report. Interior Ministry spokesperson Maximilian Kall stated that his ministry cannot comment on “individual threat situations” but emphasized that “we take the significantly increased threat from Russian aggression very seriously.”

“We know that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s regime aims primarily to undermine our support for Ukraine in its defense against the Russian war of aggression, but the German government won’t be intimidated,” Kall stated.

He highlighted that German security measures have been significantly strengthened since 2022, adding that “the threats range from espionage and sabotage to cyberattacks and state terrorism.”

In April, German investigators arrested two German-Russian men on suspicion of espionage, with one of them accused of planning attacks on potential targets, including U.S. military facilities, in an effort to sabotage aid for Ukraine.

Germany has become the second-largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

CNN reported that the alleged plot against Papperger was part of a series of Russian plans to assassinate European defense industry executives supporting the Ukrainian war effort.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the report, stating, “All of this is again presented in the fake style, so such reports cannot be taken seriously,” he told reporters on Friday.

Celebrating La FĂȘte Nationale: From Revolt to National Unity

Paris, France. Every year in France, we celebrate National Day on 14th July. In English-speaking countries, it is often called “Bastille Day.” However, in France, it is referred to as La FĂȘte Nationale or Le Quatorze Juillet.

What is the significance of the fourteenth of July? What actually happened at the Bastille?

The Bastille had stood in Paris since medieval times, first used as a fort and then a prison. By 1789, it had come to symbolize royal power and was attacked by thousands of angry Parisians on July 14, 1789.

In the summer of 1789, unrest had been growing in Paris.

Earlier that year, the Estates General had met at Versailles. Delegates representing the ordinary people – the Third Estate – were at last able to air their grievances and express their dissatisfaction with France’s absolutist monarchy. They were no longer content with power being held exclusively by the nobility and the clergy and demanded an equal share. To reinforce their claims, they formed themselves into a self-declared National Assembly.

Initially, King Louis XVI appeared to accept the challenge to his absolute power, but in fact, he resisted plans for a constitutional monarchy, in which more power would be given to the people. Royal troops were stationed around Paris. Against a backdrop of rising food prices and widespread hunger, the citizens responded by electing their own representatives and setting up their own militias.

“The Storming of the Bastille,” 19th century, France.

It was one such group of citizens, in search of arms and ammunition, which descended upon the Bastille Prison on that fateful July day. Although the prison had held political prisoners in the past, only a handful of inmates were imprisoned there on 14 July 1789. One of the Bastille’s more famous inmates, the Marquis de Sade, had been moved to another prison just days earlier.

A large crowd, some of them already armed, surrounded the building and demanded entry and access to weapons. The governor of the prison negotiated with the mob for several hours before they finally were able to enter. They seized weapons, killed the guards, including the governor who had his throat cut, and freed the prisoners.

When the news of the taking of the Bastille was relayed to King Louis XVI at Versailles, he is famously reported to have said, “Is it a revolt?” to which his courtier replied, “No sire, it is a revolution.”

On July 14, 1790, the first anniversary of the fall of the Bastille was celebrated in a spirit of optimism and unity. Little did the French realize that years of revolutionary terror and turmoil lay ahead. In 1790, La FĂȘte de la FĂ©dĂ©ration celebrated what was expected to be the new political structure in France – a constitutional monarchy. Fourteen thousand “fĂ©dĂ©rĂ©s” or representatives from the provinces, as well as soldiers, came to Paris, and even Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette took part in the celebrations.

During the nineteenth century, society and government swung back and forth between monarchists and republicans, and there was no fixed national holiday. The date varied according to which regime was in power. In 1804, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte declared his birthday, 15th August, as the French National Day (it was also conveniently a religious feast day). During the Restoration period of 1814 – 1830, a constitutional monarchy was in place, and the name day of each of the kings was decreed as the national day.

In the decade following the tumultuous events of 1870 and 1871, the Third Republic was created, and the newly elected government hoped to heal a divided French society. Inspired by the spirit of national unity of the earlier FĂȘte de la FĂ©dĂ©ration, the government revived the date, and the fourteenth of July was finally adopted as the French National Day in 1880.

How is it celebrated in small towns, and across France and the world?

La FĂȘte Nationale conveniently falls at the time when a majority of French people are enjoying their summer holidays. In France, and in French territories around the globe, the day is marked by fireworks, street parties, parades, and concerts. Another popular modern tradition is the bal des pompiers. Each year, the local fire stations open their doors and transform their casernes into a venue for community parties.

For the last two years, fireworks displays and other public events were canceled. This year, in small towns and big cities, French people are excited to be able to finally celebrate their national day in style.
