Bangladeshi Authoritarian Leader Flees Country Amid Protests

The tide has turned in Bangladesh: Authoritarian Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has stepped down and fled the country, marking a victory for democracy and justice. Congratulations to the courageous students who led the charge. May Bangladesh now move towards peace, reconciliation, and prosperity.

Prime Minister of Bangladesh, H. E. Sheikh Hasina depart for a Bangladesh after concluded her state visit to India

New York, N.Y. — In a stunning turn of events, Bangladesh’s long-serving Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has stepped down and fled the country, marking the end of an era characterized by authoritarian rule. Her resignation comes after months of intense protests led by students, demanding her ouster and a shift towards democratic governance. Sheikh Hasina, known for her heavy-handed tactics and harassment of our friend, Nobel Prize-winning economist Mohammed Yunus, has faced increasing pressure both domestically and internationally.

The sustained protests, driven by the country’s youth, have highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with her regime’s corruption, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement. Mohammed Yunus, celebrated for his pioneering work in microfinance and as the founder of Grameen Bank, had long been a target of Sheikh Hasina’s repressive measures. Her attempts to discredit and undermine him were seen as part of a broader strategy to suppress dissent and consolidate power.

As news of her departure spread, celebrations erupted across the nation. Students who had been at the forefront of the protests expressed their joy and hope for a new beginning for Bangladesh. Calls for peace, reconciliation, and prosperity are now resonating throughout the country, as citizens look forward to rebuilding and reforming their political system.

The international community has also welcomed the news, with leaders and organizations urging Bangladesh to embrace democratic reforms and ensure a peaceful transition of power. The departure of Sheikh Hasina is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the grievances of the Bangladeshi people and paving the way for a more just and equitable society.

Taiwanese Boxer Lin Yu Ting Challenges Gender Verification Policies

0

“Every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination,” the International Olympic Committee said.

Paris, France. A number of MAGA figures have criticized Algerian boxer Imane Khelif‘s win in an Olympic women’s bout, with some claiming that she is a man.

Former President Donald Trump and his 2024 running mate J.D. Vance are among those who have spoken out in the wake of the fight between Khelif and Italian boxer Angela Carini in Paris last week. The Italian withdrew from the fight after just 46 seconds, with Carini later saying that “one punch hurt too much” for her to continue.

Khelif, as well as Lin Yu Ting of Taiwan, were permitted to take part in the Olympics after being disqualified from the International Boxing Association (IBA)’s world championships in 2023 for failing gender eligibility tests. The IBA released a statement last week saying that the two boxers “did not undergo a testosterone examination” but were subject to “separate and recognized” tests that will remain confidential.

Lin Yu Ting of Taiwan is a double International Boxing Association gold medal winner.

IBA president Umar Kremlev told the Russian news agency Tass last year that Khelif and Lin were disqualified from the world championships because “it was proven they have XY chromosomes.”

Kremlev has not made proof of his assertions public and The Associated Press reports that Khelif is listed as female on her passport.

Khelif and Lin have competed as women in amateur tournaments for years. Khelif won a silver medal at the IBA’s 2022 world championships and competed at the Tokyo Olympics, while Lin is a double IBA gold medal winner.

After Lin‘s victory over Carini on Thursday received widespread backlash, the International Olympic Committee issued a statement dismissing the “misleading information about two female athletes” competing in the boxing tournament.

The IOC, which is overseeing the boxing competition in Paris and cut ties with the IBA last June, does not conduct tests for XY chromosomes or elevated levels of testosterone, and said the “gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport.”

In their statement, the IOC defended the pair taking part in Paris while also attacking the IBA’s decision to ban them after unspecified gender tests. “Every person has the right to practice sport without discrimination,” the statement said.

“All athletes participating in the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024 comply with the competition’s eligibility and entry regulations, as well as all applicable medical regulations set by the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit. As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport.

“The current aggression against these two athletes is based entirely on this arbitrary decision, which was taken without any proper procedure – especially considering that these athletes had been competing in top-level competition for many years.”

In these United States: Are Politicos as Diverse as our People?

0

With Kamala Harris poised to pick a possible Jewish or gay running mate, we stop to ponder if these United States are as diverse as our ‘melting pot’ population

President John Kennedy with the Pope.

New York, N.Y. John Kennedy was the first Roman Catholic president, being accused by detractors as being more loyal to the Pope than to the Constitution. Barack Obama was the first multi-racial Black president who detractors claimed was not ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ Kamala Harris has been the first multi-racial Black Vice President with the nation’s first Jewish spouse, Doug Emhoff, as Second Gentleman.

LGBTQ+ Americans

Pete Buttigieg is the first openly gay federal official to be confirmed to a cabinet position, specifically as Secretary of Transportation. Internationally, 7% of people answer surveys to identify as LGBTQ+.

The U.S., the Philippines, and Israel top the list, each with 11% of adults identifying as LGBT+. Thailand and Canada follow closely, each with 10%, while Sweden, Brazil, and Australia report 9% of their populations as LGBT+.

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg and family.

Predictably, surveys highlight substantial variations in LGBT+ identification across different age groups within the U.S. For instance, 20% of Gen Z individuals identify as LGBT+, compared to 11% of Millennials, 6% of Gen Xers, and 5% of Baby Boomers. This age-based disparity underscores evolving trends in LGBT+ identification and acceptance over time.

Roman Catholic Americans

About 24% of Americans identify as Catholic. Joe Biden is Catholic. The https://stewardshipreport.org/wiki/vatican/ is no longer seen as a threat as some suggested it could be when JFK first ran in 1960.

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

Jewish Americans

As mentioned, Kamala Harris’ husband Doug Emhoff is Jewish, the first Second Gentleman we have ever had.

Jewish Senators can be counted on one hand: our friend Richard Blumenthal (CT), Ben Cardin (MD), Jacky Rosen (NV), our own Senator, Chuck Schumer (NY), and our progressive Brooklyn native in New England, the iconic Bernie Sanders (VT). But that is still 5%. About 2% of America is Jewish, so this checks.

Jewish governors, incidentally, make up 3% of American governors: Jared Polis (CO), J.B. Pritzker (IL), and Josh Shapiro (PA)]. If Kamala Harris picks Josh Shapiro as her running mate, this would be the first Jewish V.P. Candidate in our nation’s history.

Other Religious Minorities in the U.S.

Mormons constitute about 2% of the U.S. population, while Jehovah’s Witnesses, Buddhists, Hindus, and Muslims are each about 1% of our population.

Multi-racial Americans

More than 10% of our population are multi-racial. Barack Obama’s parents were American white and Kenyan (Ann Dunham/ Barack Obama Sr.), while Kamala Harris’ parents are Indian and Jamaican (Shyamala Gopalan/Donald Harris). Interestingly, both sets of parents met in grad school).

The next election will answer our question.

We are either balanced and tremendously diverse with a Harris White House or taking a century or more step backwards (no insult intended to Abraham Lincoln) if we suffer a second Trump White House. Until November 7th, it is anyone’s guess.

“Make America Great Again” is a dog-whistle for “Make America White Again.” The balance of Washington and by extension the world is really 50-50. May light triumph over darkness.

Oregon’s Direct Democracy and Animals

This would mean that animals on farms, in research labs, redoes, zoos, and in the wild, could no longer be legally exploited and would be protected by law.

In a world increasingly aware of the rights and well-being of animals, significant legislation is gaining momentum in the state of Oregon. Oregon is one of 18 states in the U.S. that allows direct democracy, meaning any individual can propose laws or bills to be passed or adopted by the state government. This process requires gathering a sufficient number of signatures to get the initiative on the ballot, where it can then be adopted or rejected by voters in the next general election.

One initiative, IP28 is diligently collecting signatures to appear on the 2026 ballot and could change the landscape of animal rights forever. Currently, only cats and dogs, animals considered to be ‘companions’ are protected by law. This initiative, known as IP28, seeks to change that. If IP28 passes, it would remove existing exemptions and criminalize the injuring, killing, forced impregnation, and masturbation of all animals within the state.

This would mean that animals on farms, in research labs, redoes, zoos, and in the wild, could no longer be legally exploited and would be protected by law. By recognizing the personhood of all animals, Oregon could pave the way for a universal bill of animal rights, ultimately ending all forms of animal exploitation worldwide. Scientific research and evidence irrefutably prove that animals are sentient, and justice demands that all sentient beings be protected from exploitation and oppression.

IP28 also proposes the establishment of a Humane Transition Fund. This fund would offer grants to individuals whose livelihoods depend on exploiting animals, providing financial assistance for lost income, job retraining, and support for conservation and rewilding efforts. This initiative ensures that the transition to an exploitation-free state is not only ethical but also economically viable.

The Humane Transition Fund will be administered by a council consisting of representatives from the Oregon Department of Agriculture, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, Office of Tribal Affairs, and Oregon Department of Human Services, among other community members who would be impacted by the implementation of IP28.

For those concerned about meeting their need for food, Oregon is already producing far more food than needed to feed everyone and is a top-ranking producer of many fruits, nuts, and vegetables. Spaying and neutering, if administered as part of veterinary medicine, would still be legally protected under the law.

IP28 may likely be voted down, however just making it onto the ballot would be a significant victory, as it would bring the discussion of animal rights more into the mainstream. Previous fights for justice through Oregon’s direct democracy have also taken more than one election. Voting rights for women spanned 42 years and appeared on the state’s ballot six times.

For those who are passionate about animal rights and want to make a difference, there are numerous ways to get involved in the campaign IP28  is currently seeking volunteers, paid petitioners, and donations to help gather the necessary signatures to get on the ballot. Registered voters in Oregon can also visit the official website to sign the initiative.

Visit yesonip28.org to learn more about this groundbreaking initiative and how you can contribute to a future where all animals live free from exploitation. Together, we can make this vision a reality.

Former President Hopes to Vote for Kamala Harris in 2024

New York, N.Y. In a heartfelt statement today, former President Jimmy Carter who is almost a century old expressed his hope to cast his vote for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. Carter, revered as one of the most moral and compassionate leaders in American history, praised Harris’s commitment to public service and social justice.

I believe in Kamala Harris’s vision for our country,” Carter said. “Her dedication to uplifting all Americans and addressing the critical issues we face today resonates deeply with my own values and principles.”

Jimmy Carter’s legacy as a moral president is well established.

President Jimmy Carter in the Oval Office of the White House, Washington, D.C., 1978.

Often compared to current President Joe Biden for his kindness and decency, Carter’s presidency was marked by a profound commitment to human rights and ethical governance.

His post-presidential years have been equally impressive, particularly through his extensive work with Habitat for Humanity.

Carter’s hands-on involvement in building homes for those in need has inspired countless volunteers, including my father, who shared Carter’s passion for making a tangible difference in the lives of others through Habitat.

Although I never having met him in person, I once corresponded with President Carter, an experience that left a lasting impression. Receiving a letter from President Carter filled me with a sense of awe. His words of encouragement and kindness were truly inspiring.

As the nation looks ahead to the next election, Carter’s endorsement of Kamala Harris underscores the enduring influence of his moral leadership and the hope he places in future generations to continue the work of building a just and compassionate society.

Erdoğan Threatens to Invade Israel Over Gaza War

The October 7th Hamas attack on Israel was evil. But wanton murder and destruction of women and children in Gaza is not the answer.

New York, N.Y. In an escalating exchange of rhetoric, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently made headlines by threatening to invade Israel over its actions in Gaza.

This bold declaration from the Turkish leader has sparked a fierce backlash from Israeli officials, who have responded with stern warnings and sharp criticism.

Erdoğan’s comments came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where the ongoing conflict in Gaza has drawn international scrutiny and condemnation.

The Turkish president, known for his assertive foreign policy and outspoken criticism of Israel, took the opportunity to amplify his stance, suggesting that Turkey might take military action in response to what he described as Israel’s aggressive tactics against Palestinians.

The reaction from Israel was swift and pointed.

Israeli Foreign Minister, whose name was not disclosed in the initial reports, issued a stern rebuke, warning Erdoğan that his threats could lead to a dire outcome.

“If you continue on this path, you might end up like Saddam Hussein,” the Foreign Minister declared, drawing a parallel to the fate of the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein who was overthrown and executed following the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The comparison to Saddam Hussein reflects the gravity with which Israeli officials view Erdoğan’s threats.

In Israel’s perspective, Erdoğan’s rhetoric is seen not just as a political posturing but as a dangerous escalation that could destabilize the already volatile region. Israeli politicians have labeled Erdoğan a “wannabe dictator,” suggesting that his aggressive stance might backfire and lead to his own downfall.

Erdoğan indeed is an authoritarian, nationalist leader among many including Modi, Xi, Putin, Kim, Assad, Khamenei, and MBS.

But, as has been said, even a psychiatric patient can yell, “Fire!”

In the midst of this heated exchange, a surprising note of encouragement has emerged. Despite the harsh rhetoric, there is a recognition that Turkey’s vocal support for the Palestinian cause, amid a global landscape where many countries have been less outspoken, is noteworthy.

The Israeli Foreign Minister’s comments, while sharp, also reflect a complex reality: the Turkish government’s stance on Palestine highlights the challenges and divisions within the international community regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

While we are surprised by Turkey’s bold stance, we are also encouraged to see a Muslim-majority country taking a firm stand for Palestine when so few others have done so. The October 7th Hamas attack on Israel was evil. But wanton murder and destruction of women and children in Gaza is not the answer.

We acknowledge Turkey’s position on the Palestinian issue while we express enormous concern over the potential for increased regional conflict.

As the diplomatic row continues, the international community watches closely.

The tension between Turkey and Israel underscores the broader challenges facing efforts to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the broader Middle Eastern geopolitical landscape.

The potential for further escalation remains a pressing concern, with global leaders and analysts urging for de-escalation and dialogue to avoid further destabilization in the region.

Questioning Justice: Ethics of Guantánamo Torture

Offering relief from the death penalty only to later reinstate it is clearly cruel and unusual punishment

Washington, D.C. The men who planned and executed the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, where I once worked, are undeniably evil.

However, we question the decision to keep them in Guantánamo Bay, where they are deprived of access to our fair judicial system.

We also question the use of waterboarding and other torture methods at Guantánamo Bay to extract confessions, as these practices violate the Geneva Convention.

Demonstrators reenact waterboarding torture at a protest against it.

Furthermore, we are concerned about Lloyd Austin’s recent decision to cancel a pre-deal by a subordinate, regardless of whether we agree with the pre-deal itself. Offering relief from the death penalty only to later reinstate it is clearly cruel and unusual punishment.

We believe this decision was or certainly looks like it was influenced by political pressure rather than a genuine pursuit of justice.

These men should be held in a federal penitentiary for the rest of their lives. However, the torture they have endured does not align with the principles of justice in the United States. Their situation and cases must be addressed justly and without delay.

International Support Grows for Venezuela’s Opposition Candidate

Leaders from the European Union, Latin America, and Canada have voiced support for González, expressing concern for the safety of both González and opposition leader María Corina Machado.

New York, N.Y. International leaders have congratulated Edmundo González for “receiving the most votes” in Venezuela’s election, as more countries recognize the opposition candidate as the winner of Sunday’s disputed poll.

Leaders from the European Union, Latin America, and Canada have voiced support for González, expressing concern for the safety of both González and opposition leader María Corina Machado. On Thursday, these leaders acknowledged González as the rightful winner of last Sunday’s vote, citing “overwhelming evidence.”

Venezuela’s electoral authority, seen by critics as favoring the ruling socialists, proclaimed President Nicolás Maduro the winner, stating on Monday that he obtained 51% of the vote compared with 46% for González. The head of the CNE electoral body reaffirmed a similar margin of victory for Maduro on Friday and said it had now counted 97% of the vote.

Despite demands from the opposition and governments and organizations throughout the region, the CNE has yet to release detailed vote tallies. The CNE’s website has been down since Monday, with authorities blaming a hack but presenting no evidence.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has joined this group of international leaders, congratulating González and expressing concern for the opposition candidate’s safety, while the Venezuelan government continues to accuse Washington of leading a “coup attempt.”

Josh Shapiro: Leading Pennsylvania with Heart and Vision

We firmly believe that Kamala Harris has a steadfast partner in Josh Shapiro

New York, N.Y. During my college years, I had the privilege of serving as a camp counselor for Easter Seals in Pennsylvania (story). It was here, amidst the rolling hills and serene lakes, that we witnessed the immense needs of Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable children. These young souls, each with their unique challenges and triumphs, opened our eyes and hearts to a world often overlooked by many.

We saw children whose lives were a constant battle against physical, mental, and emotional hardships. Yet, despite these challenges, their spirits remained unbroken. Their laughter, determination, and pure joy in the simplest of moments were infectious. We fell in love with each of them, wishing we could take them all into our home, offering them the security and love they so richly deserved.

Fast-forward decades, and our connection to Pennsylvania’s children remains strong. Today, we look to Josh Shapiro, the governor of Pennsylvania, with immense hope and admiration. His commitment to the welfare of the state’s most vulnerable is evident in every policy he champions and every decision he makes.

Bio of Josh Shapiro

Josh Shapiro is the current governor of Pennsylvania, known for his unwavering dedication to justice and public service. With a background in law, Shapiro has served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania, where he tackled issues ranging from opioid addiction to consumer protection. His leadership is marked by a deep commitment to integrity, transparency, and the well-being of all Pennsylvanians, especially the children.

As governor, Shapiro has continued to prioritize education, healthcare, and social services, ensuring that the state’s most vulnerable populations receive the support and opportunities they need to thrive. His proactive approach and empathetic leadership have earned him respect and trust across the political spectrum.

Our Belief

We firmly believe that Kamala Harris has a steadfast partner in Josh Shapiro. The children of Pennsylvania are undoubtedly in capable and caring hands with Shapiro at the helm. We extend this confidence beyond Pennsylvania’s borders, asserting that the children of these great United States, in fact, all Americans, would be in great hands with Josh as well. His vision and compassion resonate with the values we hold dear, making him a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for the future.

U.N.: Is Protest Suppression in Bangladesh Crime Against Humanity?

Eyewitnesses describe a pattern of arbitrary arrests and custodial torture, with some detainees allegedly forced to sign confessions under duress

New York, N.Y. — The United Nations has raised alarm over Bangladesh’s violent suppression of anti-government protests, warning that the actions of security forces may amount to crimes against humanity. The crackdown, which has resulted in widespread arrests, injuries, and reports of enforced disappearances, has drawn international condemnation as concerns mount over the erosion of democratic freedoms in the South Asian nation.

Since late last year, thousands of demonstrators—many affiliated with the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and other activist groups—have taken to the streets, demanding free and fair elections. The ruling Awami League, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, responded with force, deploying riot police and paramilitary units to disperse crowds. Human rights organizations report that security forces have used rubber bullets, tear gas, and live ammunition, leading to multiple deaths and scores of injuries.

“The systematic targeting of protesters, opposition members, and journalists raises serious concerns under international law,” said a spokesperson for the U.N. Human Rights Office. “If these abuses are widespread and part of a state policy to silence dissent, they could constitute crimes against humanity.”

Eyewitnesses describe a pattern of arbitrary arrests and custodial torture, with some detainees allegedly forced to sign confessions under duress. International watchdogs, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have echoed the U.N.’s concerns, urging Bangladesh to halt its repression and ensure accountability for abuses.

In response, the Bangladeshi government dismissed the allegations, claiming that security measures are necessary to maintain public order. “We are protecting democracy, not stifling it,” a government spokesperson said, accusing opposition groups of inciting violence.

Despite international outcry, the crackdown appears to be escalating, with new reports of journalists being harassed and media outlets facing censorship. As Bangladesh prepares for its next election cycle, the U.N. and global human rights advocates warn that continued repression could plunge the nation into deeper political turmoil.

“Conversion” Therapy is a Dangerous Practice Targeting LGBTQ+ Youth

The World Psychiatric Association considers same-sex attraction, orientation, and behavior as normal variants of human sexuality and states that there is no sound scientific evidence that innate sexual orientation can be changed.

New York, N.Y. — “Conversion” therapy is a dangerous, torturous practice that targets LGBTQ+ youth and seeks to change their sexual or gender identities.

So-called “conversion therapy,” sometimes known as “reparative therapy,” is a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.

Such practices have been rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades, but due to continuing discrimination and societal bias against LGBTQ+ people, some practitioners continue to conduct conversion therapy. Minors are especially vulnerable, and conversion therapy can lead to depression, anxiety, drug use, homelessness, and suicide.

To date, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Utah, Virginia, Vermont, Washington, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico all have laws or regulations protecting youth from this harmful practice.

Eight of these state laws or regulations were enacted under Republican governors. A growing number of municipalities have also enacted similar protections, including at least 70 cities and counties in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin.

Some right-wing religious groups promote the concept that an individual can change their sexual orientation or gender identity, either through prayer or other religious efforts, or through so-called “conversion” therapy. The research on such efforts has disproven their efficacy, and also has indicated that they are affirmatively harmful.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Counseling Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the National Association of Social Workers, together representing more than 477,000 health and mental health professionals, have all taken the position that homosexuality is not a mental disorder and thus there is no need for a ‘cure.’”

Research on the Impacts of Reparative Therapy, Harms Caused by Societal Prejudice

American Psychological Association

In 2007, a task force of the American Psychological Association undertook a thorough review of the existing research on the efficacy of conversion therapy.

Their report noted that there was very little methodologically sound research on sexual orientation change efforts (SOCEs) and that the “results of scientifically valid research indicate that it is unlikely that individuals will be able to reduce same-sex attractions or increase other-sex sexual attractions through SOCE.” In short, there is clear evidence that conversion therapy does not work, and some significant evidence that it is also harmful to LGBTQ+ people.

American Academy of Child Adolescent Psychiatry

“The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry finds no evidence to support the application of any “therapeutic intervention” operating under the premise that a specific sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression is pathological.

Furthermore, based on the scientific evidence, the AACAP asserts that such “conversion therapies” lack scientific credibility and clinical utility. Additionally, there is evidence that such interventions are harmful. As a result, “conversion therapies” should not be part of any behavioral health treatment of children and adolescents.”

American Academy of Pediatrics

Confusion about sexual orientation is not unusual during adolescence. Counseling may be helpful for young people who are uncertain about their sexual orientation or for those who are uncertain about how to express their sexuality and might profit from an attempt at clarification through a counseling or psychotherapeutic initiative.

Therapy directed specifically at changing sexual orientation is contraindicated, since it can provoke guilt and anxiety while having little or no potential for achieving changes in orientation.”

American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy

“[T]he association does not consider homosexuality a disorder that requires treatment, and as such, we see no basis for [reparative therapy]. AAMFT expects its members to practice based on the best research and clinical evidence available.”

American College of Physicians

“The College opposes the use of “conversion,” “reorientation,” or “reparative” therapy for the treatment of LGBTQ persons

American Counseling Association

“The belief that same-sex attraction and behavior is abnormal and in need of treatment is in opposition to the position taken by national mental health organizations, including ACA. The ACA Governing Council passed a resolution in 1998 with respect to sexual orientation and mental health.

This resolution specifically notes that ACA opposes portrayals of lesbian, gay and bisexual individuals as mentally ill due to their sexual orientation… In 1999, the Governing Council adopted a statement ‘opposing the promotion of reparative therapy as a cure for individuals who are homosexual.’ …

American Medical Association

“Our AMA… opposes, the use of ‘reparative’ or ‘conversion’ therapy that is based upon the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or based upon the a priori assumption that the patient should change his/her homosexual orientation.”

American Psychiatric Association

“The potential risks of “reparative therapy” are great and include depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient.

Many patients who have undergone “reparative therapy” relate that they were inaccurately told that homosexuals are lonely, unhappy individuals who never achieve acceptance or satisfaction.

The possibility that the person might achieve happiness and satisfying interpersonal relationships as a gay man or lesbian are not presented, nor are alternative approaches to dealing with the effects of societal stigmatization discussed…

Therefore, the APA opposes any psychiatric treatment, such as “reparative” or “conversion” therapy, that is based on the assumption that homosexuality per se is a mental disorder or is based on the a priori assumption that the patient should change his or her homosexual orientation.

American Psychoanalytic Association

“As with any societal prejudice, bias against individuals based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression negatively affects mental health, contributing to an enduring sense of stigma and pervasive self-criticism through the internalization of such prejudice.

Psychoanalytic technique does not encompass purposeful attempts to ‘convert,’ “repair,” change or shift an individual’s sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Such directed efforts are against fundamental principles of psychoanalytic treatment and often result in substantial psychological pain by reinforcing damaging internalized attitudes.”

American Psychological Association

“The American Psychological Association affirms that same-sex sexual and romantic attractions, feelings, and behaviors are normal and positive variations of human sexuality regardless of sexual orientation identity;

That homosexuality per se is not a mental disorder and opposes portrayals of sexual minority youths and adults as mentally ill due to their sexual orientation;

That the American Psychological Association concludes that there is insufficient evidence to support the use of psychological interventions to change sexual orientation; and

That the American Psychological Association encourages mental health professionals to avoid misrepresenting the efficacy of sexual orientation change efforts by promoting or promising change in sexual orientation when providing assistance to individuals distressed by their own or others’ sexual orientation…”

American School Counselor Association

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered and questioning (LGBTQ) youth often begin to experience self-identification during their pre-adolescent or adolescent years, as do heterosexual youth. These developmental processes are essential cognitive, emotional and social activities, and although they may have an impact on student development and achievement, they are not a sign of illness, mental disorder or emotional problems nor do they necessarily signify sexual activity.

The professional school counselor works with all students through the stages of identity development and understands this development may be more difficult for LGBTQ youth. It is not the role of the professional school counselor to attempt to change a student’s sexual orientation/gender identity but instead to provide support to LGBTQ students to promote student achievement and personal well-being.

National Association of Social Workers

“People seek mental health services for many reasons. Accordingly, it is fair to assert that lesbians and gay men seek therapy for the same reasons that heterosexual people do.

However, the increase in media campaigns, often coupled with coercive messages from family and community members, has created an environment in which lesbians and gay men often are pressured to seek reparative or conversion therapies, which cannot and will not change sexual orientation. Aligned with the American Psychological Association’s (1997) position, (we) believe that such treatment potentially can lead to severe emotional damage.

Specifically, transformational ministries are fueled by stigmatization of lesbians and gay men, which in turn produces the social climate that pressures some people to seek change in sexual orientation. No data demonstrate that reparative or conversion therapies are effective, and in fact they may be harmful.”

Just the Facts Coalition

Just the Facts Coalition (American Academy of Pediatrics, American Association of School Administrators, American Counseling Association, American Federation of Teachers, American Psychological Association, American School Counselor Association, American School Health Association, Interfaith Alliance Foundation, National Association of School Psychologists, National Association of Secondary School Principals, National Association of Social Workers, national Education Association, School Social Work Association of America)

“The most important fact about ‘reparative therapy,’ also sometimes known as ‘conversion’ therapy, is that it is based on an understanding of homosexuality that has been rejected by all the major health and mental health professions.

World Psychiatric Association

“There is no sound scientific evidence that innate sexual orientation can be changed. Furthermore, so-called treatments of homosexuality can create a setting in which prejudice and discrimination flourish, and they can be potentially harmful (Rao and Jacob 2012). The provision of any intervention purporting to “treat” something that is not a disorder is wholly unethical…

WPA considers same-sex attraction, orientation, and behavior as normal variants of human sexuality. It recognizes the multi-factorial causation of human sexuality, orientation, behavior, and lifestyle. It acknowledges the lack of scientific efficacy of treatments that attempt to change sexual orientation and highlights the harm and adverse effects of such “therapies.”

Government Positions on Conversion Therapy

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration

“Specifically, conversion therapy—efforts to change an individual’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression —is a practice that is not supported by credible evidence and has been disavowed by behavioral health experts and associations.

Conversion therapy perpetuates outdated views of gender roles and identities as well as the negative stereotype that being a sexual or gender minority or identifying as LGBTQ is an abnormal aspect of human development. Most importantly, it may put young people at risk of serious harm”

Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to the President of the United States

“The overwhelming scientific evidence demonstrates that conversion therapy, especially when it is practiced on young people, is neither medically nor ethically appropriate and can cause substantial harm.

As part of our dedication to protecting America’s youth, this Administration supports efforts to ban the use of conversion therapy for minors… This Administration believes that young people should be valued for who they are, no matter what they look like, where they’re from, the gender with which they identify, or who they love.”

Andrew Cuomo, Former Governor of New York

Conversion therapy is a hateful and fundamentally flawed practice that is counter to everything this state stands for. New York has been at the forefront of acceptance and equality for the LGBTQ community for decades – and today we are continuing that legacy and leading by example. We will not allow the misguided and the intolerant to punish LGBTQ young people for simply being who they are.”

Chris Christie, Former Governor of New Jersey

“…on issues of medical treatment for children we must look to experts in the field to determine the relative risks and rewards. The American Psychological Association has found that efforts to change sexual orientation can pose critical health risks including, but not limited to, depression, substance abuse, social withdrawal, decreased self-esteem and suicidal thoughts. I believe that exposing children to these health risks without clear evidence of benefits that outweigh these serious risks is not appropriate.”

Kate Brown, Governor of Oregon

“There are many things that young people need, but breaking them down based on their sexual or gender identity is not one of them — and in fact, it’s inexcusable. Our young people deserve acceptance, support, and love. To the young people who question their identities, suffer from bullying, or struggle with what it means to come out, today is your day. Your voices have been heard.”

Jerry Brown, Former Governor of California
“These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.”

Weak Yen Fuels Tourist Surge to Japan for Luxury Shopping

This influx of international shoppers has led to bustling stores in major Japanese cities, with popular shopping districts in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto becoming hotspots for luxury purchases.

As the Japanese yen experiences a significant depreciation, hitting a 38-year low against the U.S. dollar last month, tourists from around the world are flocking to Japan to take advantage of the favorable exchange rates.

This currency fluctuation has turned Japan into a hotbed for luxury shopping, with international visitors snapping up high-end clothes and handbags at discounted prices.

However, global luxury brands like LVMH, the parent company of Louis Vuitton, are not entirely pleased with this trend, as they prefer customers to shop in their home markets.

Tourists, particularly from other parts of Asia, Europe, and North America, have been quick to capitalize on the weakened yen.

For instance, a Louis Vuitton Neverfull MM bag, typically priced at around $2,030 in New York, can be purchased in Tokyo for approximately ¥275,000, which, with the current exchange rate, is roughly $1,870—a savings of over $160.

Similarly, a Chanel Classic Flap Bag, costing about $9,500 in the United States, is available in Japan for around ¥1,290,000, translating to roughly $8,800, providing a savings of $700 or more.

Other luxury brands like Gucci, Hermes, and Prada are also seeing increased sales in Japan as savvy shoppers seek out deals that are significantly cheaper than in their home countries.

For example, a Gucci Marmont bag, priced at $2,350 in New York, costs around ¥320,000 ($2,180) in Tokyo, offering a substantial discount.

Retailers are experiencing an unprecedented boom, with many tourists taking advantage of Japan’s tax-free shopping for foreigners, further increasing their savings.

While this surge in tourism and spending boosts the local economy, luxury brands are concerned about the long-term impact on their pricing structures and market positioning.

Companies like LVMH and others may be forced to consider price adjustments or other strategies to manage this unexpected influx of foreign shoppers.

For now, however, the weak yen continues to draw tourists eager to experience the allure of high-end fashion at a fraction of the cost they would pay at home.

As the yen fluctuates, the situation remains dynamic, with tourists closely watching exchange rates and brands evaluating their global pricing strategies. This phenomenon underscores the complex interplay between currency values and international commerce, particularly in the luxury goods sector.

“The Boyfriend” on Netflix: A Look at Gay Relationships in Japan

Japanese TV Show “The Boyfriend” Breaks New Ground on Netflix

New York, N.Y. In recent years, foreign television shows have gained significant traction on global streaming platforms, with South Korean dramas leading the charge in terms of popularity and cultural impact. However, a new Japanese reality TV show, “The Boyfriend,” is making waves on Netflix for its bold and refreshing portrayal of same-sex relationships. This show stands out not only for its content but also for its potential impact on societal attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights in Japan, a country where same-sex marriage is not yet legally recognized.

“The Boyfriend” follows the lives of several gay couples, exploring their relationships, challenges, and the nuances of love in contemporary Japanese society. Unlike traditional Japanese television, which has often shied away from LGBTQ+ themes, this show takes a direct and empathetic approach, offering viewers a rare glimpse into the everyday lives of gay men in Japan. The show’s candid portrayal is groundbreaking in a media landscape where LGBTQ+ representation has historically been minimal and often stereotyped.

Having spent a significant part of my college years studying in Tokyo, I experienced firsthand the complexities of being gay in Japan. Despite the country’s vibrant urban culture, openly gay spaces and discussions were limited, and societal attitudes were often conservative. This show is particularly meaningful to me because it reflects a shift towards greater visibility and acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals in Japan. It’s not just a reality show; it’s a cultural milestone that could pave the way for broader acceptance and legal recognition of same-sex relationships in Japan, possibly following in the footsteps of Taiwan, which became the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019.

The quality of Japanese television has often been overshadowed by the slick production values and compelling storytelling of Korean dramas. However, “The Boyfriend” is a testament to Japan’s evolving television industry, which is beginning to embrace more diverse and bold narratives. The show’s success on Netflix highlights a growing international interest in Japanese culture and media, offering a platform for more authentic and inclusive stories to reach a global audience.

The reception of “The Boyfriend” has been overwhelmingly positive, both in Japan and internationally. The show has sparked conversations on social media, with many viewers praising its honest portrayal of gay relationships and its potential to influence public opinion and policy.

Social media hashtags like #TheBoyfriendNetflix, #GayJapan, and #LGBTQJapan have gained traction, with users expressing support and sharing their own stories of love and acceptance. News outlets have also picked up on the show’s significance, framing it as a potential catalyst for change in Japan’s approach to LGBTQ+ rights.

Netflix “The Boy Friend” starring Megumi, Horan Chiaki, Thelma Aoyama, Durian Lollobrigida, and Yoshimi Tokui.

We see “The Boyfriend” as part of a larger movement towards inclusivity and acceptance of diverse identities and relationships. The show’s success could encourage more Japanese producers and networks to explore LGBTQ+ themes, contributing to a more inclusive media landscape. Furthermore, as international pressure and domestic advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights continue to grow, shows like “The Boyfriend” can play a crucial role in shifting public perception and fostering a more accepting society.

“The Boyfriend” is more than just a TV show; it’s a cultural phenomenon that reflects and influences changing attitudes towards LGBTQ+ issues in Japan and beyond. As Japan contemplates the legalization of same-sex marriage, shows like “The Boyfriend” provide a platform for visibility and dialogue, challenging stereotypes and promoting understanding. This is a significant step not only for the LGBTQ+ community in Japan but for global efforts towards equality and human rights.

CONFIDENTIAL: Potential Plans for Pakistan (Fall 2024)

The Luce Family Charities include:

  • Orphans International Worldwide (www.orphansinternational.org) which began in 1998, “Raising Global Leaders,” supported by the estate of Jim Luce’s mother, a child psychologist (see New York Times and U.S. Congressional Record, Frances Alleman Luce).
  • J. Luce Foundation (www.lucefoundation.org), “Supporting Young Global Leadership,” inspired by Jim’s father, a professor, founded in 2008 (see Wikipedia, Dr. Stanford Luce).
  • The Stewardship Report on Connecting Goodness (www.stewardshipreport.org) that began publication in 2010.
  • The New York Global Leadership Lions Club founded in 2015.
  • Luce Leadership Centre at Caribbean Maritime University (2015), and at a local college supporting rural women (India/2021), we began “Educating Young Global Leaders.”

Possibilities for Pakistan include:

  • Creation of Orphans International Pakistan to rent/buy one home to raise 12 children from infancy through higher education or vocational training, boys and girls to mirror an actual family, preferably in a small town on the outskirts of a large city easily accessible to international travel. These children would not be available for international adoption. They would be raised according to their biological parents’ faith, which would probably be Islam. They would attend the best local school possible.

Orphans International operates or has operated in Haiti (Jacmel, Gonaïves, Léogâne), Sri Lanka (Galle), Indonesia (Sulawesi, Aceh, and Bali), Dominican Republic, and India (Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh).
  • Creation of the James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation in Pakistan. The J. Luce Foundation operates or has operated in the U.S., Canada, India and Indonesia.

    – The foundation may move toward creation of a J. Luce Leadership Centre in conjunction with a local university such as created at the Caribbean Maritime University in Jamaica, or under construction at a college in Jharkhand, India. Leadership Centre activities include English proficiency, writing for The Stewardship Report, and creating a branch club of Lions Clubs International.

    – We are building out a college level Online & Experiential Education Program that might fit a potential project in Pakistan. In addition, we have a cadre of global advisors in the U.S. who wish to be hosted for a 6- or 9-month visiting scholar program in Pakistan.

    – The foundation also works to identify Luce 24 Under 24 Awardees to be invited to our recognition ceremonies in New York or Washington, D.C. The foundation has a strong record of advocating for Awardees to enter American higher education, especially with Harvard, Yale and Princeton universities. In addition, we have a strong relationship with Marietta College in Ohio for students not at the Ivy league level.

    – Our foundation would also be able to coordinate Luce Leadership Experiences, which consist of a dozen college-age young global leaders from the New York area traveling for ten days to ‘experience’ the extremes of wealth and poverty seen in health and education and to be recognized for their efforts by Pakistani officials (often at a Congressional level). These trips have occurred to Greece, Jamaica and Indonesia and were cancelled recently to Israel.

    – Finally, our foundation would also be able to coordinate World Congress V which occurs every five years which could be scheduled for Pakistan. These Congresses have taken place at NYU and Columbia universities in New York, Haiti and Indonesia, and was cancelled because of the Pandemic in Luce Hall at Yale.

Timeline Proposal

  1. Feb. 2025: Executive Trip to Lahore
  2. April 2025: 25th Anniversary Reception II at Luce Hall, Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.
  3. Sept. 2025: Online & Experiential Education Program to begin
  4. Sept. 2025: Classes with Experiential Education Program to commence
  5. Sept. 2025: Clubs & Activities to begin
  6. Jan. 2026: Temporary home and office could open

Decoding Dog-Whistling: Subtlety of Hidden Messaging

0

In more recent years, the practice of dog-whistling has evolved and expanded, particularly in discussions around immigration and migrants. Politicians and commentators often use terms like “illegal aliens,” “border security,” and “invasion” to invoke fear and suspicion of immigrants, often implying that migrants pose a threat to national security or cultural identity

Historical and Contemporary Analysis

New York, N.Y. Dog-whistling, a term used to describe the use of coded or suggestive language in political messaging that conveys a specific, often controversial, meaning to a particular group without explicit acknowledgment, has a long history in U.S. politics. This technique allows politicians to communicate with select audiences in a way that may not be apparent to the general public, often skirting more overt and potentially offensive statements.

The term “dog-whistling” is derived from the silent whistles used to train dogs, which emit sounds at a frequency that can be heard by dogs but not humans. In a political context, it refers to messages that resonate with specific groups while remaining ambiguous or innocuous to others. The practice has been used across the political spectrum, although it has been particularly noted in issues relating to race, immigration, and social policy.

Photo: Historically, black jockey statuettes depicting racist caricatures of African Americans were commonplace. The most prolific being a version commonly known as “Jocko,” with stocky build and hunched posture. He was styled as a racist caricature of a young black boy, often with exaggerated features, such as big eyes with the whites painted in; large lips painted red; a large, flat nose and curly hair.

Historically, dog-whistling can be traced back to the “Southern Strategy” employed by some Republicans in the 1960s and 1970s. This strategy aimed to gain political support from Southern whites by appealing to racial anxieties without overtly racist statements. Phrases like “states’ rights” and “law and order” were used to signal opposition to civil rights advancements without explicitly endorsing segregationist policies.

A notable example of dog-whistling in U.S. politics was the infamous “Willie Horton” ad used during the 1988 presidential campaign. The ad, which was aired by supporters of Republican candidate George H.W. Bush, highlighted the case of Willie Horton, an African American convicted felon who committed crimes while on furlough from prison. The ad was widely criticized for stoking racial fears and exploiting stereotypes to undermine Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis, who had supported the furlough program as Governor of Massachusetts.

In more recent years, the practice of dog-whistling has evolved and expanded, particularly in discussions around immigration and migrants. Politicians and commentators often use terms like “illegal aliens,” “border security,” and “invasion” to invoke fear and suspicion of immigrants, often implying that migrants pose a threat to national security or cultural identity. This type of rhetoric can mobilize a political base without explicitly stating anti-immigrant sentiments, thereby allowing speakers to deny accusations of prejudice.

Donald Trump’s political career has been marked by frequent accusations of using dog-whistling, particularly concerning his statements on immigration. His calls to “build the wall” along the U.S.-Mexico border and his description of some Mexican immigrants as “rapists” and “criminals” are cited as examples of language that resonates with certain voters while being dismissive or hostile towards immigrants. Such statements can galvanize a segment of the electorate that is concerned about immigration without openly espousing xenophobic views.

Horse-whistling, a term similar to dog-whistling, is often used to describe subtler, less direct messages aimed at a broader audience. This term has been employed to describe political rhetoric that conveys underlying messages about racial, cultural, or socio-economic issues. For instance, discussions about “urban crime” or “welfare reform” can carry connotations about race and class without explicit statements, influencing public perception and policy debates.

The use of dog-whistling and horse-whistling raises significant ethical and democratic concerns.

These practices can obscure the true intentions of political messages, making it difficult for voters to engage in transparent and informed debate. Furthermore, they can perpetuate stereotypes and social divisions by subtly reinforcing prejudiced views.

Understanding the nuances of dog-whistling and horse-whistling is crucial for navigating the complexities of modern political communication. As political discourse continues to evolve, the ability to identify and critically evaluate these subtle forms of messaging remains essential for fostering a more informed and inclusive democratic society.

Decoding Dog-Whistling: Subtle Politics of Hidden Messaging (Aug. 1, 2024)

Trump Sparks Outrage at Black Journo Convention

Trump’s question is a textbook example of dog-whistling—a tactic used to send subtle, coded messages to a specific audience. In this case, by questioning the journalist’s racial identity, Trump was implicitly suggesting that her ‘American-ness’ is questionable or conditional, thus painting her as “other” and not fully American. This type of rhetoric is not only divisive but also taps into long-standing prejudices and stereotypes about race and identity in the U.S.

New York, N.Y. In a recent interview with the National Association of Black Journalists, former President Donald Trump made headlines for his racially charged comments towards Kamala Harris being of both Jamaican and Indian descent. The incident has sparked widespread criticism and reignited discussions about racial insensitivity and dog-whistling in political discourse.

During the interview, Trump asked the journalist, “What is she in terms of race? Is she Indian or black?” This question, directed at the Democratic Presidential candidate who identifies as black and has a background of Jamaican and Indian heritage, struck many as deeply inappropriate and offensive. Harris, whose father is Jamaican and mother is Indian, attended a historically black university and has been an active member of the Black Caucus in Congress, embracing her identity as a black woman.

Dog-whistling is a political strategy where certain phrases or questions are used to signal something to a particular group without overtly stating it. It’s a way of communicating to a particular base—often using language that appears benign or neutral on the surface but carries a deeper, often discriminatory, meaning. Trump’s questioning of her race serves as a subtle yet powerful signal to those who harbor nativist or exclusionary sentiments, suggesting that some Americans are less authentically American than others based on their race or ethnic background.

This incident is not an isolated one; it fits into a broader pattern of Trump’s rhetoric that has often been criticized as racially insensitive or outright racist. From questioning the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s birthplace to derogatory comments about immigrants, Trump’s language frequently casts doubt on the belonging and identity of people of color in the U.S. Such rhetoric not only alienates diverse communities but also fuels a divisive and exclusionary narrative.

The journalists’ experience reflects a broader issue that biracial and multiracial individuals often face: the pressure to categorize themselves in ways that fit narrow societal expectations. In a multicultural society, being biracial or multiracial should be celebrated as part of the rich tapestry of American identity, not used as a tool for exclusion or suspicion. As global citizens, we should embrace the diversity that biracial individuals bring to our communities, recognizing that identity is multifaceted and personal.

Trump’s remarks serve as a reminder of why his leadership has been contentious, particularly concerning issues of race and identity.

For many, his comments underscore the need for leaders who are committed to unity, inclusion, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their racial or ethnic background. The global community, which increasingly values diversity and inclusivity, views such rhetoric as a step backward in the pursuit of equality and understanding.

A Tale of Two Koreas: Unfortunate Olympic Mix-Up Sparks Outcry

Mistaken Identity: The Olympic Mix-Up of South and North Korea

Paris, France. In a significant blunder during the opening ceremony of the Olympics, the organizers mistakenly introduced the athletes from South Korea under the flag and name of North Korea. The error occurred as the teams paraded into the stadium, leading to immediate confusion and consternation among spectators and officials alike. This incident, though quickly corrected, has underscored the sensitivity and importance of accurate representation at international events, especially when it comes to nations with a complex and tense relationship.

The Mix-Up and Its Immediate Impact

As the South Korean athletes entered the arena, they were mistakenly introduced as representatives of North Korea, complete with the flag and anthem of the neighboring state. The mix-up was particularly jarring given the historical and political tensions between the two Koreas, which are officially still at war, despite a ceasefire agreement in place since 1953. The error was swiftly rectified, with the correct flag and name being displayed shortly after, but the incident had already made waves both inside the stadium and across social media platforms worldwide.

Reactions from South Korean Officials

South Korean officials were quick to express their dismay and disappointment at the mistake. In a press release, the South Korean Olympic Committee stated, “This error is deeply regrettable and unacceptable. The identity and sovereignty of the Republic of Korea are of utmost importance and must be respected at all times. We expect a thorough investigation and appropriate measures to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future.”

The mix-up was seen not only as a logistical failure but also as a sensitive diplomatic issue. South Korean diplomats and officials highlighted the emotional impact on their athletes, who were caught in a moment of national pride turned awkward. The mistake was particularly painful for those who have experienced or have family ties to the historical and ongoing tensions between the two nations.

A Broader Issue of Mistaken Identity

This incident is not an isolated one. Similar errors have occurred in various contexts around the world, often with countries that have contentious relationships or significant differences. Such mistakes can arise from simple administrative errors or from deeper misunderstandings and lack of awareness about international nuances. For instance, there have been instances where flags of countries like Slovakia and Slovenia, or Colombia and Bolivia, have been confused due to their similar colors and designs.

These mix-ups, while sometimes seemingly trivial, can have serious diplomatic repercussions. They often provoke strong reactions from the affected nations, who may view these mistakes as disrespectful or indicative of a lack of recognition of their distinct identities and issues.

Global Reaction and Media Coverage

The mix-up quickly became a talking point on social media, with hashtags like #KoreaMixUp and #OlympicBlunder trending. The global audience expressed a range of reactions, from shock and sympathy for the South Korean athletes to criticism of the organizing committee’s oversight. Many commentators emphasized the need for greater cultural sensitivity and accuracy in international events, which are seen as platforms for global unity and respect.

Last Supper: Drag Spectacle Redefining Inclusion at Olympics

Paris, France. In a groundbreaking fusion of art, culture, and sports, “The Last Supper: A Drag Queen Spectacle” took center stage at the recent Olympics, capturing the world’s attention and igniting a dynamic conversation about diversity, inclusion, and the power of humor. This theatrical piece reimagined Leonardo da Vinci’s iconic painting, infusing it with modern sensibilities and a vibrant display of drag artistry. The performance, featuring a talented ensemble of drag queens from around the globe, offered a fresh and provocative interpretation of The Last Supper, challenging traditional norms and celebrating the rich tapestry of human expression.

    Purpose and Intent

The “Last Supper: A Drag Queen Spectacle” was not just an artistic endeavor but a cultural statement designed to promote diversity and inclusion, aligning closely with the Olympic values of unity and global harmony. The creators sought to use the platform of the Olympics to highlight the importance of accepting people from all walks of life, irrespective of their gender identity, sexuality, or cultural background. By casting drag queens in the roles of Jesus and his apostles, the performance aimed to challenge stereotypes and encourage audiences to rethink traditional narratives.

The production utilized humor and creativity as key tools to engage viewers, making complex themes accessible and fostering an inclusive atmosphere. The vibrant costumes, lively performances, and clever dialogue were crafted to celebrate the art of drag as a powerful form of storytelling and social commentary. The decision to reinterpret such a well-known religious and cultural scene was intended to spark dialogue and reflection, encouraging a deeper understanding of the evolving nature of traditions and the universal values of love, acceptance, and compassion.

    Global Reaction

The global reaction to the performance was as diverse as the audience it reached. On the one hand, many praised the production for its boldness and innovation. Supporters viewed it as a celebration of LGBTQ+ representation and a courageous step towards normalizing diverse forms of identity and expression. They highlighted how the performance successfully brought important social issues to a mainstream, global audience, using the universal language of art and humor to bridge cultural divides.

Conversely, the performance also faced criticism, particularly from more conservative or religious groups. Some viewers felt that the reinterpretation of a sacred event was inappropriate or disrespectful, arguing that it trivialized deeply held beliefs. This reaction underscores the challenges of balancing artistic expression with respect for religious and cultural sensitivities.

    Our Perspective

From our standpoint, the “Last Supper” drag queen performance represents a significant moment in the intersection of art, culture, and social advocacy. It exemplifies the belief that humor and diversity are not just desirable but essential in creating a more inclusive and empathetic society. The performance demonstrated that while art may provoke and challenge, it also has the potential to heal, educate, and unite. The conversations sparked by this production—both positive and critical—are a vital part of the journey towards greater understanding and acceptance.

Cold Reality of Power: Murdoch Family’s Ideological Rift

I have met Rupert Murdoch before. I was introduced to him at a gala at the Waldorf Astoria by Henry Luce III. Rupert struck me as one of the most coldhearted men I had met in my life. His politics seemed to match his personality, being strict and somewhat ruthless. His family appeared to have a similar dynamic to his business, with relationships often defined by competition and a struggle for dominance.

New York, N.Y. The legal drama involving Rupert Murdoch and his children is a complex narrative shaped by both political beliefs and economic interests. Rupert Murdoch, a media mogul with a vast empire including Fox News and The Wall Street Journal, has long been influential in shaping public opinion and political discourse. This influence has often aligned with conservative ideologies, reflecting Murdoch’s own political leanings.

Within the Murdoch family, there have been notable differences in political beliefs, particularly between Rupert and his son James Murdoch. James has distanced himself from the more conservative elements of the family’s media holdings, expressing concerns about the impact of their coverage on democracy and public discourse. This ideological rift has been compounded by business interests, especially regarding the succession and control of the Murdoch empire, News Corp and Fox Corporation.

The legal battles and disputes within the family are not just about differing political ideologies but also involve substantial economic stakes. The division of the family’s assets and the future leadership of their media companies are central issues, with each faction seeking to secure their influence and financial interests. This has led to a complicated interplay of personal ambitions, ideological differences, and economic considerations, making the Murdoch family saga a multifaceted drama.

James Murdoch’s break from the family’s conservative leanings seemed to be more than just a personal choice; it represented a broader ideological clash within the family, exacerbated by the question of succession and control over the media empire.

The stakes are high, not only because of the immense wealth involved but also due to the influence these media outlets wield over public opinion and political landscapes globally. The outcome of these internal family conflicts could significantly impact not just the Murdochs but also the broader media industry and public discourse.

Elon Musk’s Transgender Daughter Opens Up About Father

Vivian Jenna Wilson Reveals Painful Memories of Growing Up Queer in Musk Household

New York, N.Y. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Elon Musk’s transgender daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, opened up about her experiences growing up as the child of the tech billionaire. For the first time, Vivian shared her story publicly, offering a glimpse into her personal journey and the challenges she faced, including her relationship with her father.

Vivian, who transitioned in recent years, spoke candidly about her childhood, describing it as a time of confusion and struggle, particularly with her identity. She recounted instances where she felt misunderstood and unsupported by her father, Elon Musk, who is known for his controversial statements on social media and public forums.

In the interview, Vivian revealed that Musk often made dismissive and hurtful comments about LGBTQ+ individuals, which deeply affected her. She described feeling berated for being queer, long before she fully understood her own identity. “It wasn’t just the words; it was the tone and the attitude,” she said. “It felt like there was no room for me to be myself.”

Vivian’s decision to speak out is significant, given Musk’s high-profile status and influence. She expressed hope that her story might help others who are struggling with similar issues, particularly those who feel isolated or unsupported by their families.

The interview also highlighted Vivian’s journey of self-discovery and acceptance. She spoke about the importance of finding a supportive community and the relief that came with embracing her true identity. “For a long time, I felt like I was living a lie,” she said. “But coming out was liberating. It allowed me to finally be authentic and to live my truth.”

Vivian’s story has sparked discussions about the responsibilities of public figures in supporting and understanding diverse identities, especially within their own families. It also raises important questions about the societal expectations placed on children of high-profile parents and the unique pressures they face.

Vivian concluded her interview with a message of hope and resilience. “It’s never too late to become who you are,” she said. “I hope that by sharing my story, others will feel empowered to live authentically and to seek the support they need.”

The interview has been widely covered and has generated significant conversation online, reflecting the ongoing societal challenges related to LGBTQ+ acceptance and family dynamics. 1959 Was a Time for International Events as Well

    The Significance of 65:
    A Historical and Global Perspective

The age of 65 has long been considered the traditional retirement age in the U.S., largely due to the Social Security Act of 1935. This act established 65 as the age at which Americans could begin to receive full retirement benefits, shaping the societal expectation of retirement.

Globally, retirement ages vary, often reflecting differences in life expectancy, economic conditions, and social security systems.

For example, many European countries have retirement ages ranging from 60 to 67, while some Asian countries, like Japan and South Korea, have similar or slightly higher retirement ages, reflecting their longer life expectancies.

    Longevity and Historical Milestones

Americans are living longer than ever, thanks to advances in healthcare, nutrition, and overall living conditions. Historically, the average life expectancy has increased significantly. In 1940, the year after the Social Security Act was amended to include benefits for spouses and dependents, 65 was roughly the average age of death in America.

Today, life expectancy in the U.S. has risen to around 78 years, with many living well into their 80s and beyond, leading to shifts in retirement planning and expectations.

Notable Figures Who Passed at the Age of 65

Many renowned individuals have died at the age of 65, marking the end of illustrious careers and impactful lives. Among them are:

The Year 1959 – Photo: His Holiness the Dalai Lama escapes China in March 1959.
    • Winston Churchill (1965): The former British Prime Minister known for his leadership during World War II.
    • Babe Ruth (1948): Legendary baseball player who changed the face of the sport.
    • Martin Luther King Sr. (1984): Influential civil rights leader and father of Martin Luther King Jr.
    • Peter Sellers (1980): Acclaimed British actor and comedian known for his roles in the “Pink Panther” series.
    • Elvis Presley (1977): Iconic American singer and actor, known as the “King of Rock and Roll.”

These figures, each remarkable in their own right, remind us of the varied and often unpredictable span of human life, highlighting the importance of celebrating each milestone with gratitude and reflection.

Both my grandfathers and mother died accidental deaths in their 70’s, so we do not know how long they would have lived. My father lived to 83 and my maternal grandmother to 102. I may retire from philanthropy and writing at 70, time will tell. I will never achieve anywhere near as much as the individuals mentioned above, but perhaps I have done more with my life than many. Thirty was a year for self-reflection. Sixty-five is as well, I have discovered!
