Life of Aristides de Sousa Mendes: An Example For Us All

“I would rather stand with God against Man than with Man against God.”

New York, N.Y. Secretary-General António Guterres heralded the opening of a new museum in central Portugal on Friday which honors the extraordinary life of a man who showed “immense bravery” helping thousands of refugees escape the Nazi regime during World War Two.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a beacon of courage, compassion, and conviction in a world of total moral collapse,” said Mr. Guterres in a video message to inaugurate the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Museum in the town of Carregal do Sal.

Aristides de Sousa Mendes was a Portuguese diplomat based in Bordeaux, France, who defied his own Government’s orders to stamp passports and visas that allowed thousands to flee on to Portugal.

Safe passage

A Portuguese visa allowed them safe passage through Spain, which was officially neutral. However, the infamous Portuguese ‘Circular 14’ directive instructed diplomats to deny safe haven to refugees, explicitly Jews, Russians, and other stateless persons who could not return home.

As the Nazis quickly approached the Bordeaux consulate where Mendes was working, he faced a stark choice between following orders or saving lives. He chose the latter, declaring “I would rather stand with God against Man than with Man against God.”

‘Lives saved and lives lived’

Working day and night, Mendes established a rapid system to stamp and sign passports and issue thousands of lifesaving visas in June 1940.

“His legacy is lives saved and lives lived – including a young girl who, years later, would become the mother of my own Spokesperson at the United Nations,” said the U.N. chief, who served as Prime Minister of Portugal between 1995 and 2002.

Mr. Mendes was forced to pay for his heroism. Portuguese dictator António de Oliveira Salazar – who ruled the country for forty years up to 1968 – expelled him from the diplomatic corps without any pension, leaving him to die in poverty.

Thankfully, in the decades since, the magnitude and bravery of his actions have been gradually recognized, said the Secretary-General.

“This museum – in his ancestral home – is a critical part of those efforts,” Mr. Guterres stressed.

The memory of Mendes

The inauguration of the museum comes at a “vital time,” as the number of people forced to flee their homes has reached a record high and “hatred and intolerance are rife,” Mr. Guterres noted.

“We are at risk of forgetting our shared humanity,” he emphasis ed.

In this context, Mr. Guterres is calling on people everywhere to be inspired by the memory of Mr. Mendes and take courage from his bravery.

“Let us commit to defend human rights and dignity for all. And to stand up against discrimination, intolerance, and hate whenever and wherever they appear,” the Secretary-General said.

World Court: Israeli Occupation of Palestine ‘Unlawful’

The U.N. International Court of Justice concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and that it is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence “as rapidly as possible.” Israel is also “under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the opinion continued, as well as “reparation for the damage caused to all natural or legal persons concerned.”

New York, N.Y. The U.N. International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday declared that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory “is unlawful”, and that “all States are under an obligation not to recognize” the decades-long occupation.

The Court was responding to a request for an advisory opinion by the General Assembly on the legal consequences arising from the policies and practices of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem.

The advisory from the ICJ is a legal opinion provided by the Court on questions of international law.

Unlike judgments in contentious cases between States, advisory opinions are non-binding and are sought by United Nations bodies such as the General Assembly or the Security Council.

While not legally binding, advisory opinions can shape international policies, increase moral pressure, and unilateral measures adopted by individual States such as sanctions.

Israel’s obligations

In its advisory opinion, the ICJ concluded that Israel’s continued presence in the Occupied Palestinian Territory is unlawful and that it is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence “as rapidly as possible”.

Israel is also “under an obligation to cease immediately all new settlement activities and to evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the opinion continued, as well as “reparation for the damage caused to all natural or legal persons concerned”.

States’ obligations

It further stated that “all States are under an obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence” of Israel.

States are also under the obligation to “not to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.

International organizations’ obligations

For international organizations, including the UN, the Court noted the “obligation not to recognize as legal the situation arising from the unlawful presence” of Israel.

The ICJ further noted that UN, and especially the General Assembly and the Security Council, “should consider the precise modalities and further action required to bring to an end as rapidly as possible the unlawful presence of the State of Israel in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

Call for engagement

Following the issuance of the opinion, U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his call for the parties to re-engage on the “long-delayed political path” towards ending the occupation and resolving the conflict in line with international law, relevant UN resolutions and bilateral agreements.

“The only viable path is the vision of two States – Israel and a fully independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian State – living side by side in peace and security within secure and recognized borders, on the basis of the pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both States,” his spokesperson said in a statement.

The statement also noted that the UN chief will promptly transmit the advisory opinion to the General Assembly, which had requested the Court’s advice.

“It is for the General Assembly to decide how to proceed in this matter,” the statement added.

Israel’s response

According to media reports, Israel’s Foreign Ministry rejected the ICJ’s opinion as “fundamentally wrong” and “blatantly one-sided”.

It also repeated its stance that a political settlement in the region can only be reached through “direct negotiations”.

General Assembly request

The General Assembly adopted a resolution in December 2022, which among other points requested the ICJ to provide its opinion under Article 96 of the U.N. Charter and Article 65 of the Court’s Statute.

The opinion lays out the legal consequences of Israel’s “ongoing violation” of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, from its prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of territories occupied since 1967, and discriminatory measures, including those affecting Jerusalem’s demographic composition and status.

It also sought to understand how these policies and practices of Israel affect the legal status of the occupation and its legal consequences.

Examining Flaws in J.D. Vance’s Portrayal of Appalachian Culture

However, having grown up in Butler County, Ohio, and then moved to Washington County, Ohio, on the West Virginia border, I realize that Ohio has several dozen Appalachian counties. Butler County ain’t one of them. I do not understand how Hillbilly Elegy purports to describe an “Appalachian experience” that did not occur in Appalachia.

New York, N.Y. I was born just 14 miles from where J.D. Vance was born, in Hamilton, Ohio. Both Hamilton and Middletown are located in Butler County and are considered part of the Midwestern Rust Belt.

Hillbilly Elegy is a memoir by J.D. Vance that explores his upbringing in a working-class family in Middletown, Ohio, and the broader issues facing America’s white working class. Vance details the struggles of his family and community, including poverty, addiction, and a sense of hopelessness.

The book also aims to highlight the cultural and social challenges of Appalachia, offering a personal perspective on the economic and social decline in the Rust Belt and the difficulties of upward mobility.

Adding insult to injury with his so-called Appalachian narrative, Vance went on to study at Yale. My father studied at Yale, and I studied in Tokyo; there’s nothing wrong with that. However, we don’t tout our family as lower middle-class.

From his book, it is clear that Vance believes in limiting human rights in America, not expanding them. The only right he defends is the right to own a gun. He does not believe in the right to healthcare or marriage. Free speech only includes speech he agrees with. He believes ‘sexualized’ speech, including pornography, should be illegal. He suggests that a woman should not be able to leave a violent relationship as she is needed to stay home and take care of the children.

He opposes Ukraine defending itself against Russia’s brutal aggression. The people of Appalachia believe in fighting for one’s own home and family and would support their neighbor in doing the same.

Vance follows Mencius Moldbug on social media, an anti-democratic American blogger who is leading the anti-egalitarian philosophical movement known as Dark Enlightenment.

Finally, Vance is a convert to Catholicism. Roman Catholics make up less than 10% of Appalachia compared to almost a quarter of the population outside the region.

J.D. Vance in his book Hillbilly Elegy may describe his own Hand Maiden’s values, but not Appalachian values. Don’t insult Appalachia.

Dismantling White Privilege: Steps Towards Racial Equity

White privilege refers to the unearned advantages and benefits that white people receive in societies structured by racial hierarchies. These advantages can manifest in various forms, including social, economic, educational, and political realms. Unlike overt acts of racism, white privilege often operates subtly and unconsciously, making it all the more insidious and challenging to address.

New York, N.Y. As we navigate the complexities of modern society, one concept that demands our attention and understanding is white privilege. From our perspective as thought leaders and global citizens, it is imperative to critically examine the implications of white privilege, recognize its pervasive impact, and work towards dismantling the systemic inequalities that it perpetuates.

Understanding white privilege requires us to acknowledge the historical and structural foundations that have created and sustained racial disparities. The legacy of colonialism, slavery, segregation, and discriminatory policies has entrenched racial inequalities in many aspects of life. These historical injustices have not only disadvantaged people of color but also conferred systemic advantages to white individuals, often without their explicit awareness.

One of the most significant aspects of white privilege is the relative ease with which white individuals can navigate societal institutions. For example, in the realm of education, white students are more likely to attend well-funded schools, have access to advanced placement courses, and receive favorable treatment from educators. This educational privilege often translates into greater opportunities for higher education and career advancement, perpetuating a cycle of advantage.

In the workplace, white privilege manifests in hiring practices, promotions, and workplace culture.

White individuals are more likely to be hired for jobs, promoted to leadership positions, and receive higher salaries compared to their equally qualified peers of color. This professional privilege not only reinforces economic disparities but also perpetuates the underrepresentation of people of color in decision-making roles, limiting diverse perspectives in critical areas of influence.

White privilege also extends to everyday interactions and societal norms.

White individuals can generally expect to be treated with respect and presumption of innocence in various situations, from interactions with law enforcement to customer service encounters. They are less likely to experience racial profiling, discrimination, or microaggressions that people of color face regularly. This social privilege creates a sense of security and belonging that is often taken for granted.

Recognizing white privilege is not about assigning blame or guilt but about fostering awareness and responsibility. It requires us to reflect on our own experiences and understand how systemic advantages have shaped our lives. By acknowledging these privileges, we can become more empathetic and proactive in addressing the inequities that affect marginalized communities.

One way to address white privilege is through education and dialogue.

We must engage in honest conversations about race, privilege, and systemic inequality. This involves listening to the experiences of people of color, amplifying their voices, and challenging our own biases. Education systems must incorporate comprehensive curricula that highlight the historical and contemporary realities of racial injustice, promoting critical thinking and empathy among students.

Another crucial step is advocating for policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion. This includes supporting affirmative action, diversifying hiring practices, and implementing anti-discrimination policies in workplaces, schools, and other institutions. By creating more inclusive environments, we can help level the playing field and ensure that opportunities are accessible to everyone, regardless of their racial background.

As individuals, we can also leverage our privilege to advocate for change.

This means using our platforms and influence to speak out against racial injustice, supporting organizations that work towards racial equity, and actively participating in movements that challenge systemic oppression. By taking a stand against racism and promoting inclusivity, we can contribute to building a more just and equitable society.

Reflecting on white privilege, we are reminded of the importance of humility and continuous learning. It is not enough to be passively non-racist; we must be actively anti-racist, committed to understanding and addressing the root causes of racial inequality. This journey requires us to confront uncomfortable truths, challenge our own assumptions, and remain steadfast in our pursuit of justice.

As we move forward, let us recognize that dismantling white privilege is not just the responsibility of those who are directly affected by racial injustice. It is a collective endeavor that requires the commitment and solidarity of all individuals who believe in the principles of equality and human dignity. By working together, we can create a world where privilege is not determined, in the words of Dr. King, by the color of one’s skin but by the content of one’s character.

A Stark Warning: MAGA and 1930s Nazi Conventions Parallels

When we compare the MAGA Republican conventions of today with the Nazi conventions of the 1930s, the resemblances are impossible to ignore. Through careful analysis, we see patterns of propaganda, cult-like fervor, and a dangerous narrative of nationalism that bears a chilling resemblance to the past.

New York, N.Y. As students of history and keen observers of current political climates, we recognize the weight of drawing parallels between different eras.

Yet, when we compare the MAGA Republican conventions of today with the Nazi conventions of the 1930s, the resemblances are impossible to ignore. Through careful analysis, we see patterns of propaganda, cult-like fervor, and a dangerous narrative of nationalism that bears a chilling resemblance to the past.

Having survived an assassination attempt, his evangelical supporters are more convinced he is “blessed by God,” reinforcing the messianic undertones of his populist presidential campaign. Trump and his campaign have infused his candidacy with Christian imagery, fostering a cult of personality with him as its leader, solely capable of saving an America he falsely portrays as crime-ridden and on the verge of collapse.

At the heart of these conventions is a potent form of propaganda designed to stir emotions, manipulate perceptions, and rally unwavering support. Just as the Nazi conventions utilized grandiose rallies, powerful imagery, and fervent speeches to create a sense of unity and purpose, MAGA conventions employ similar tactics. The stagecraft, from the selection of music to the orchestrated chants, is meticulously designed to evoke a strong emotional response, galvanizing the base in a manner reminiscent of the Nazi approach.

We observe that the cult of personality is another disturbing similarity. Adolf Hitler was portrayed as the savior of Germany, a figure above reproach whose vision would restore the nation’s former glory.

Likewise, the MAGA movement centers around the figure of Donald Trump, who is depicted as a near-messianic leader capable of single-handedly “Making America Great Again.” The fervent loyalty and uncritical adulation from supporters mirror the blind allegiance seen in Nazi Germany, where dissent was not tolerated and loyalty was absolute.

Nationalism is a central theme in both movements.

The Nazi conventions were rife with rhetoric about Aryan supremacy, the need to reclaim lost territory, and the vilification of perceived enemies. Today, MAGA conventions echo these sentiments through slogans and speeches that emphasize American exceptionalism, border security, and a fear of the “other,” whether it be immigrants, political opponents, or foreign adversaries. This “us versus them” mentality fosters division and promotes a dangerous form of nationalism that excludes rather than includes.

Moreover, the use of scapegoating as a political tool is eerily similar.

The Nazis blamed Jews, communists, and other minorities for Germany’s problems, creating a convenient enemy to unite against. In MAGA rhetoric, we hear echoes of this as immigrants, the media, and the political establishment are blamed for the country’s issues. This scapegoating serves to divert attention from complex issues and instead focuses anger and frustration on easily identifiable targets.

The atmosphere of fear and intimidation also draws a direct line between the two eras. Nazi conventions were characterized by a heavy police presence, intimidation of dissenters, and the suppression of opposing viewpoints.

Similarly, MAGA conventions often see heightened security, clashes with protestors, and a hostile environment for those who dare to voice dissenting opinions. This suppression of free speech and the intimidation of opposition are hallmarks of authoritarian regimes.

The survival of Donald Trump from an assassination attempt has stirred fervent discussions and interpretations, with some viewing it as the hand of God at play. While such interpretations can offer solace and hope to many, we believe they carry significant dangers that warrant a closer examination.

Firstly, attributing Trump’s survival to divine intervention risks elevating him to a quasi-messianic status. This perception can bolster the already strong cult of personality surrounding him, encouraging a sense of infallibility and divine purpose.

When a political figure is seen as chosen or protected by a higher power, their actions and decisions may be deemed beyond reproach or criticism. This can erode democratic principles, where leaders are accountable to the people and subject to scrutiny and checks and balances.

Historically, the deification of political leaders has led to dangerous consequences.

Leaders perceived as divinely chosen often garner unchecked power and authority, as their followers believe they are enacting a higher will.

This was evident in the cases of numerous historical figures who used religious fervor to justify autocratic rule and suppress opposition. The danger lies in the potential for Trump to exploit this perception, intentionally or not, to consolidate power and diminish democratic norms.

Interpreting Trump’s survival as divine intervention will only deepen existing political and social divisions. Those who view the event as the hand of God may feel validated in their beliefs and become more entrenched in their support, while those who do not share this view may feel alienated or marginalized.

This can exacerbate the already polarized political climate, making constructive dialogue and compromise even more difficult. A society divided along such deeply ingrained beliefs can struggle to find common ground, which is essential for the healthy functioning of a democracy.

From a broader perspective, the intertwining of religion and politics poses significant challenges to secular governance. When political events are framed in religious terms, policy decisions may be influenced by religious beliefs rather than empirical evidence and reasoned debate

As thought leaders and global citizens, we feel a deep responsibility to highlight these parallels.

The lessons of history are clear: unchecked nationalism, the cult of personality, and the suppression of dissent can lead to devastating consequences. By drawing attention to these similarities, we hope to foster a greater awareness and a more critical examination of current political movements.

We are not suggesting that the MAGA movement is identical to the Nazi regime. The contexts and outcomes are different. However, the warning signs are there, and it is incumbent upon us to recognize and address them before they can escalate further. History has shown us the dangers of ignoring these patterns, and it is our duty to ensure that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

In understanding these parallels, we can work towards promoting a political environment based on inclusion, reasoned discourse, and a rejection of fear-mongering tactics. By doing so, we uphold the values of democracy and protect the freedoms that are the bedrock of our society.

Russian Plot Against Defense CEO Reported; Berlin Undaunted

0

Berlin, Germany. The German government has announced that it “won’t be intimidated” by Russian attempts to undermine its support for Ukraine. However, officials declined to comment on a report alleging that Moscow planned to assassinate the CEO of a leading defense company.

According to a CNN report on Thursday, citing five unidentified U.S. and Western officials, U.S. intelligence discovered earlier this year that Russia intended to kill Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger. The report stated that the United States informed Germany, whose security services successfully protected Papperger and thwarted the plot. Rheinmetall is a major supplier of military technology and artillery rounds to Ukraine.

Both Rheinmetall and the German government have refrained from commenting on the report. Interior Ministry spokesperson Maximilian Kall stated that his ministry cannot comment on “individual threat situations” but emphasized that “we take the significantly increased threat from Russian aggression very seriously.”

“We know that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s regime aims primarily to undermine our support for Ukraine in its defense against the Russian war of aggression, but the German government won’t be intimidated,” Kall stated.

He highlighted that German security measures have been significantly strengthened since 2022, adding that “the threats range from espionage and sabotage to cyberattacks and state terrorism.”

In April, German investigators arrested two German-Russian men on suspicion of espionage, with one of them accused of planning attacks on potential targets, including U.S. military facilities, in an effort to sabotage aid for Ukraine.

Germany has become the second-largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago.

CNN reported that the alleged plot against Papperger was part of a series of Russian plans to assassinate European defense industry executives supporting the Ukrainian war effort.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov dismissed the report, stating, “All of this is again presented in the fake style, so such reports cannot be taken seriously,” he told reporters on Friday.

Celebrating La Fête Nationale: From Revolt to National Unity

Paris, France. Every year in France, we celebrate National Day on 14th July. In English-speaking countries, it is often called “Bastille Day.” However, in France, it is referred to as La Fête Nationale or Le Quatorze Juillet.

What is the significance of the fourteenth of July? What actually happened at the Bastille?

The Bastille had stood in Paris since medieval times, first used as a fort and then a prison. By 1789, it had come to symbolize royal power and was attacked by thousands of angry Parisians on July 14, 1789.

In the summer of 1789, unrest had been growing in Paris.

Earlier that year, the Estates General had met at Versailles. Delegates representing the ordinary people – the Third Estate – were at last able to air their grievances and express their dissatisfaction with France’s absolutist monarchy. They were no longer content with power being held exclusively by the nobility and the clergy and demanded an equal share. To reinforce their claims, they formed themselves into a self-declared National Assembly.

Initially, King Louis XVI appeared to accept the challenge to his absolute power, but in fact, he resisted plans for a constitutional monarchy, in which more power would be given to the people. Royal troops were stationed around Paris. Against a backdrop of rising food prices and widespread hunger, the citizens responded by electing their own representatives and setting up their own militias.

“The Storming of the Bastille,” 19th century, France.

It was one such group of citizens, in search of arms and ammunition, which descended upon the Bastille Prison on that fateful July day. Although the prison had held political prisoners in the past, only a handful of inmates were imprisoned there on 14 July 1789. One of the Bastille’s more famous inmates, the Marquis de Sade, had been moved to another prison just days earlier.

A large crowd, some of them already armed, surrounded the building and demanded entry and access to weapons. The governor of the prison negotiated with the mob for several hours before they finally were able to enter. They seized weapons, killed the guards, including the governor who had his throat cut, and freed the prisoners.

When the news of the taking of the Bastille was relayed to King Louis XVI at Versailles, he is famously reported to have said, “Is it a revolt?” to which his courtier replied, “No sire, it is a revolution.”

On July 14, 1790, the first anniversary of the fall of the Bastille was celebrated in a spirit of optimism and unity. Little did the French realize that years of revolutionary terror and turmoil lay ahead. In 1790, La Fête de la Fédération celebrated what was expected to be the new political structure in France – a constitutional monarchy. Fourteen thousand “fédérés” or representatives from the provinces, as well as soldiers, came to Paris, and even Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette took part in the celebrations.

During the nineteenth century, society and government swung back and forth between monarchists and republicans, and there was no fixed national holiday. The date varied according to which regime was in power. In 1804, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte declared his birthday, 15th August, as the French National Day (it was also conveniently a religious feast day). During the Restoration period of 1814 – 1830, a constitutional monarchy was in place, and the name day of each of the kings was decreed as the national day.

In the decade following the tumultuous events of 1870 and 1871, the Third Republic was created, and the newly elected government hoped to heal a divided French society. Inspired by the spirit of national unity of the earlier Fête de la Fédération, the government revived the date, and the fourteenth of July was finally adopted as the French National Day in 1880.

How is it celebrated in small towns, and across France and the world?

La Fête Nationale conveniently falls at the time when a majority of French people are enjoying their summer holidays. In France, and in French territories around the globe, the day is marked by fireworks, street parties, parades, and concerts. Another popular modern tradition is the bal des pompiers. Each year, the local fire stations open their doors and transform their casernes into a venue for community parties.

For the last two years, fireworks displays and other public events were canceled. This year, in small towns and big cities, French people are excited to be able to finally celebrate their national day in style.

Wedding Hosted by India’s Richest Man Holds Country in Thrall

In India, where weddings have long been a display of status and wealth, the Ambani gala has surpassed anything the country has seen so far. For some it marked the arrival of Indian billionaires and their growing global clout. Others saw the glitzy celebrations as shining a light on the country’s growing wealth inequalities.

New Delhi, India. When the son of Asia’s richest man gets married, the celebrations are expected to be lavish. But the breathtaking scale of the festivities held for the youngest son of Indian business tycoon Mukesh Ambani has become the talk of the country.

Anant Ambani tied the knot with his fiancée, Radhika Merchant, in Mumbai at a star-studded event where the guests included reality TV star, Kim Kardashian, actors Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra and John Cena, former British prime ministers Tony Blair and Boris Johnson, as well as the who’s who of India from Bollywood stars and politicians to top businessmen.

The nuptials marked neither the start nor the end of the extravaganza.

More parties are in store for the weekend. They will cap monthslong prewedding bashes where international pop stars Justin Bieber and Rihanna have performed, and India’s most popular actors have shaken a leg.

Mukesh Ambani’s wealth is estimated at $124 billion, according to Forbes. The family’s sprawling business empire, Reliance Industries, spans interests in petrochemicals and oil and gas to telecoms and retail.

“If you look at it, in the past, it was the great Indian maharajas who lived and celebrated on this scale. The maharajas of this new era in India are really the billionaires,” Harish Bijoor, a brand consultant, told VOA in a phone interview.

“When guests come from across continents, it shows not just that they know how to do it in style, but also the influence they command,” he added.

Declaring the wedding a public event, Mumbai police blocked key roads around the Ambani-owned Jio Convention Center where ceremonies began last Friday. Many offices in the busy business hub where it is situated declared work-from-home for their staff.

The celebrations have set off a social media frenzy, with millions of Indians transfixed by the events. They have closely scrutinized the grand, sequin-studded outfits and stunning jewelry that included outsized emeralds and diamonds worn by the Ambani family. There has been huge speculation around how much the parties cost. The wedding invitations were made of silver and gold, according to local media reports.

While the events were private, leaked videos have made the rounds on social media.

Reliance’s official Facebook page has also shared some video clips of dance performances and photographs of the events.

The list of VIP’s who have joined in the celebrations is long. In March, at a three-day prewedding event in Ambani’s ancestral hometown of Jamnagar, among the 1,200 guests were tech billionaires Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner and a string of Bollywood stars. One hundred chefs whipped up some 500 dishes. Rihanna performed for the guests.

In May, the Ambanis went on a four-day European cruise on a chartered luxury ship that began in the Sicilian city of Palermo and ended in Rome. Videos showed performances on the liner by the Backstreet Boys, Pitbull and David Guetta and singer Katy Perry belting out numbers at a masquerade ball in Cannes.

In Indian living rooms, where cricket, Bollywood and politics usually hog the conversation, the Ambani wedding has become the hot topic of conversation, with opinion divided on whether the celebrations are too ostentatious or the billionaire family had the right to spend their money as they want in a country where the big fat Indian wedding is the norm for even the middle class.

India’s wedding industry is worth $130 billion, nearly double that of the United States, according to a report by Jefferies, a global investment firm.

“Why should the Ambanis make it a small affair? If they have the money, then why should they not splash on their wedding when the average Indian also does the same?” Bindu Sachthey, a New Delhi resident told VOA. “I don’t agree with people who criticize or troll them for this gala affair. I am enjoying having a peek into how the ultrarich celebrate.”

As the Ambani fortunes have grown in recent decades, the family has scaled up its lifestyle. Their Mumbai residence, built in 2010, is a 27-story private apartment building, with three helipads, a private movie theater and a hanging garden.

Some said the ostentatious celebrations made them uncomfortable in a country where millionaires and billionaires are multiplying as the economy grows, but the per capita annual income is still about $2,700.

India has 200 billionaires, worth around $1trillion in wealth, nearly a quarter of the country’s 2023 gross domestic product, according to Forbes.

“I am very ambivalent about these celebrations. I would rather Indian billionaires do more for philanthropy and use their wealth for society rather than spend in this manner,” said author Gurcharan Das, author and former top business executive told VOA.

“But if some of the influential and rich foreign guests who came here decide that this is the time to invest in a rising India, I would say brilliant, the wedding would have served a purpose.”

Dr. Ruth, Renowned Sex Expert and Quiet Zionist, Passes Away

We spoke to her on more than one occasion about the intimate details of our own romantic life and she was incredibly candid and helpful.

New York, N.Y. Dr. Ruth Westheimer, that iconic soul in a tiny body with a mind as big as the universe, is no more. Her passing marks the end of an era in which she revolutionized the field of sex therapy and helped countless individuals and couples navigate the complexities of their intimate lives.

We would often see Dr. Ruth at Manhattan charity galas.

We spoke to her on more than one occasion, often after several Scotch, about the intimate details of our own romantic life and she was incredibly candid and helpful.

Her warmth and humor made even the most awkward conversations feel comfortable, and her insights were always profound.

Dr. Ruth’s contributions to the field of sex therapy are unparalleled.

The author with Dr. Ruth Westheimer and John Lee at a gala at The Pierre on Fifth Avenue.

She broke down barriers and destigmatized conversations about sex, empowering people to embrace their sexuality openly and without shame.

Her books, radio shows, and television appearances educated millions and provided a compassionate, knowledgeable voice in a field that was often misunderstood.

Born in Germany as the only child of an orthodox Jewish family, she attended synagogue regularly with her father. Shortly after Kristallnacht in 1938, at the age of ten, she watched tearfully as her father was taken by the Gestapo, loaded on a truck with other Jews and sent to Dachau.

Her mother soon after put her on a kindertransport to Switzerland where she spent her cheerless adolescent years in a shelter with 300 Jewish refugee children, most of whom would be orphaned by the end of the war. Ruth’s father was killed at Auschwitz. Her mother is listed as ‘missing/ murdered.’

In 1945, as a sixteen-year-old, she boarded the clandestine immigrant ship, Mataroa, the first ship that brought Holocaust survivors to pre-state Israel, still under British rule. The boat’s passengers comprised mostly children who had been hidden in France and Switzerland. The ship arrived in Haifa Bay and the Holocaust survivors were brought to a detention camp.

In Israel, Ruth joined the Haganah and was trained as a sniper, and became proficient with Sten guns. During Israel’s War of Independence, she suffered near fatal wounds.

Once in the Jewish homeland, Ruth worked on a Kibbutz before moving to Jerusalem to study Early Childhood Education. During this period, Ruth joined the Haganah, which would later become the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Because of her diminutive height of 4 feet 7 inches, she was trained as a sniper, and became proficient with Sten guns and grenades.

During Israel’s War of Independence, Ruth suffered near fatal wounds in a mortar attack in Jerusalem. It took several months of recuperation before she could walk again.

After the war, Ruth moved to France and got her degree in Psychology at the University of Paris. She later settled in the U.S., where she would ultimately become known as Dr. Ruth, the renowned sex therapist, talk show host and author.

She was a fixture in American media, known for her frank discussions and endearing personality. Though she made her career in America, Dr. Ruth claimed until her dying days that she was and would “always be a Zionist.”

As we remember Dr. Ruth, we celebrate not just her professional achievements but also the personal impact she had on those who knew her. Her advice was a gift that many of us will cherish forever. As a survivor of the Holocaust, Dr. Ruth’s life was a testament to resilience and the power of human spirit. The world has lost a remarkable woman, an incredibly strong woman, but her wisdom and kindness will live on in our hearts.

Embracing Eugenics, Racism: Trump Nephew and Niece Tell All

Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous ManMary Trump

All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This WayFred Trump III

New York, N.Y. In his new book, Donald Trump’s nephew, Fred Trump III, writes about conversations he had with his uncle during his childhood. The book, entitled All in the Family: The Trumps and How We Got This Way, alleges that the former president used the N-word to refer to African Americans and expressed thesentimentthat disabled people should “simply die” to save society from the trouble of accommodating them.

These claims paint a troubling picture of Trump’s attitudes toward marginalized groups and add to the ongoing discourse about his controversial statements and behavior. This portrayal aligns with previous allegations made by Trump’s niece, Mary Trump, in her book Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man.

Mary Trump, a clinical psychologist, has publicly criticized her uncle for his perceived lack of empathy and his use of racist language. She has also appeared on television to discuss her experiences within the Trump family, further highlighting what she describes as a history of toxic behavior and attitudes.

North Korea Pushes English Education as Tensions with U.S. Grow

In contrast to the open hostility toward the United States, North Korea has been doubling down on English education in its public schools under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, according to North Korea internal documents, textbooks and other educational materials reviewed by VOA’s Korean Service.

Seoul, S. Korea. North Korea is typically wary of American influence flowing into the country, warning its citizens against “a rotten Yankee culture.” The isolated country’s state-run media, however, is touting the value of English language education.

North Korea’s Korean Central Broadcasting Television last month aired clips of interviews with North Korean teachers, stressing the importance of English education.

“Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un has told us in particular about strengthening education in computer technology and foreign language,” Ahn Sung Ae, principal of Pyongyang’s Sangshin Middle School, said in one of the clips. “In the education contents, including the foreign language, we are encouraged to teach the students in a more practical manner.”

The state-run television network also ran footage of a new “English learning room” for students at public schools.

Under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, North Korea has increased its hostility toward the United States and escalated tensions with a series of weapons tests, violating multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions.

In June, North Korea tested a multiple-warhead missile, which is intended to strike multiple targets in the United States.

Kim, who came to power in late 2011, overhauled the country’s education system by increasing the duration of compulsory schooling from 11 years to 12 years, starting in 2013.

North Korea’s four-year elementary school system converted to a five-year system, allowing children to begin learning English at an earlier age.

“I began to learn English when I was in the middle school. Later, there was some debate over the effectiveness of the early learning in English,” Ye Eun Lee, who defected from North Korea in 2019 when she was 19, told VOA’s Korean Service.

“And they changed the policy and started to teach English in elementary schools.”

The 12-year Compulsory Education Code, reviewed by VOA’s Korean Service, stated that English language education should be strengthened “in order to widely adopt the advanced global technologies, and develop international exchanges and cooperation in the field of science and culture.”

The code, published in 2013 by North Korea’s Education Commission, underscored that the purpose of learning English is to actually use the language in real life, requiring students to put more effort in practice.

North Korean defector Lee Chul, a graduate of Kim Il Sung University in Pyongyang and now a Peace Foundation fellow in South Korea, told VOA’s Korean Service that students tend to practice speaking and listening among themselves.

“There’s no other way, since it is difficult to find native English speakers in North Korea,” he said.

In the Kim Jong Un era, English has become an essential means to benefit from developments in global business and technology.

Lee Hyun Seung, a North Korean escapee and former chair of the Kim Il Sung Socialist Youth League branch in Dalian, China, told VOA’s Korean Service that one of the reasons behind Kim Jong Un’s push for the English use was linked to the advancement of technology.

“You need to know English to learn about information technology,” said Hyung Seung, who now lives in the United States.

Accordingly, North Korea’s English language education has increasingly focused on enhancing pragmatic skills.

A comparative analysis by VOA’s Korean Service of North Korean English textbooks and other educational materials produced before and after the 2013 education reform confirms this trend.

A newer textbook, published in July 2015 for 12th graders enrolled in specialized high schools for advanced students, prioritizes listening and speaking, rather than perfecting grammar.

The foreword of the 2015 book makes clear it was developed in accordance with Kim Jong Un’s directives to emphasize the acquisition of practical English.

The book was “designed to enable students to learn four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English at a higher level and to focus on issues related to daily life and science and technology,” according to its foreword.

Meanwhile, English-education materials for the third and fourth grade students were designed to accommodate younger learners, with texts accompanied by many illustrations.

According to the materials, the elementary students were also taught how to type alphabets on the keyboards, suggesting there are needs for the young students to write in English on the computer.

These materials reviewed by VOA’s Korean Service were saved on a tablet computer, branded as Ryonghung. The product was first released in 2013 and advertised as based on North Korea’s homegrown technologies, according to South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency.

Lee Chul said that proficiency in English helps North Korean people get better jobs, especially giving them opportunities to work overseas.

“In South Korea, anyone can go abroad. North Korean people can go abroad only when they work for diplomatic missions overseas. So, English is important for the students who want to earn more money,” he said.

Lee Hyun Seung agreed, saying being fluent in English helps job seekers land on managerial roles.

“There are two engineers. And if one of them speaks English, he will be put in a higher position,” he said.

He added that those who could understand English were considered “cultured” among North Korean people, especially when unprecedented summits were taking place between the North Korean leader and former U.S. President Donald Trump from 2018 to 2019.

Why a Stable World Needs India at Centre Stage

The people of Ukraine recognise the steadfast support India has provided in their hour of need, including sending medical equipment which has saved the lives of soldiers and civilians. It is time India offered the same support diplomatically.

Mumbai, India. The relationship between India and Ukraine is steeped in history. Before, during and after the control by the Soviet Union, both countries have a record of partnership, trade, and friendship.

Formal cooperation between the two countries now encompasses areas as diverse as cultural exchange, space technology and agricultural trade. The bedrock of Ukraine’s trading relationship with India is in the agricultural sector, which accounted for over two billion dollars’ worth of exports to India in the year leading up to the war, the vast majority of which was of vegetable oil.

Alas, despite the thousands of miles which separate India and Ukraine, the Russian invasion of Ukraine two years ago was a severe blow. The current conflict is not just a matter for Ukraine, for Europe, or even for the Global North. This is not a proxy-war as Russian commentators would have you believe; this is a battle for the independence of Ukraine.

Families have been destroyed, historic towns and villages have been turned into rubble and innocent civilians continue to be killed. Russia’s acts are so atrocious, Ukrainian children are regularly abducted into Russia, with their families desperate for them to return home.

The humanitarian need for global leaders to be vocal in their support for Ukraine has never been greater. Only this week have we seen Russian missiles target a children’s hospital, killing innocents trapped in this war.

President Zelenskyy himself highlighted his disappointment at seeing Prime Minister Modi embracing the Russian President upon his arrival, stating “it is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy hug the world’s most bloody criminal in Moscow…”

Modi must do what India has done for generations and take the side of the innocents and defend the values by which we all live by. Just this week, the White House, in press remarks as the US hosts the NATO Summit in Washington, reiterated the unique position of India, holding close ties with Moscow and called on Modi to ‘lean on’ the Russian President to promote peace. It is true that India is a strategic partner to both sides, and is in the best position to enable a full and frank discussion on the ending of this invasion.

Modi’s visit to Moscow this week must be used as an opportunity deliver the clear message that the world is tired of Putin’s imperialist games. They are failing, and no number of Russian excuses can account for the killing of children in a hospital or the continued onslaught on the people of Ukraine.

Photo: Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a boat tour in Sochi, Russia, 2018. Credit: Presidential Press and Information Office, Russia,

He must also emphasise the global effects the war brings on India itself, and other third-party nations. Putin’s imperialist war has brought devastating disruption to the global food trade and caused hardship to hundreds of millions of Indian families. Bilateral trade also plummeted by 30 percent when Russia ended the Black Sea Initiative last summer. Worldwide, the disruption Russian aggression has caused to traditional supply chains has pushed 70 million people to the brink of starvation.

Ukraine is determined not to let some of the most vulnerable people in the world become unnecessary victims of Russia’s war. President Zelenskyy launched the ‘Grain from Ukraine’ initiative in November 2022, working with the UN World Food Programme to provide a lifeline to those at a risk of extreme hunger and famine, predominantly living in the Global South.

Since then, ten shipments have transported 230,000 tons of wheat and grain to those who need it most, with recent shipments to Nigeria and Sudan acting as a lifeline to people impacted by conflict at home as well as overseas. Ukrainian consideration of others, even under the constant barrage of invasion, is a reminder why countries, like India, who share this generous nature must be vocal in their support for the survival of this independent nation.

The people of Ukraine recognise the steadfast support India has provided in their hour of need, including sending medical equipment which has saved the lives of soldiers and civilians. It is time India offered the same support diplomatically.

Whilst welcoming the work India has already done to move towards a sustainable peace, President Zelenskyy has asked Prime Minister Modi for his support in delivering the Ukrainian Peace Formula, the only way of delivering a just and lasting end to this horrific war. Putin’s efforts to label this as a ‘proxy-war’ against the West needs to be called out as the fabrication it is. This is a war of imperialist expansion, something that countries like India fought so hard to end in the twentieth century.

India’s history knows too well the damage that war can bring. Like then, it is the innocent population who want nothing more to live in an independent country and make their own decisions contrary to efforts by a much bigger power.

It is time to put an end to this humanitarian catastrophe. It’s time for leading powers to take the lead in shaping the future of the world. It’s time for India to take centre stage.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Yunus Set to Stand Trial Again

Yunus — a political rival of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina — was sentenced in January to six months in jail for violating labor laws at the nonprofit. He remains out on bail but faces nearly 200 additional charges, mostly civil cases, all of which he denies.

Dhaka, Bangladesh. Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, celebrated for his pioneering work in microfinance, is facing a new trial in a criminal case next week in Bangladesh on charges of embezzling more than $2 million from the workers’ welfare fund of his nonprofit, Grameen Telecom.

In the current case, the prosecution alleges that Yunus and his codefendants diverted funds from Grameen Telecom workers’ welfare fund, a major stakeholder in Grameenphone, Bangladesh’s largest mobile phone operator. Yunus has denied the charges.

Yunus’ trial, set to start July 15, has drawn global attention amid concerns about his potential imprisonment. His lawyer, Abdullah Al-Mamun, told VOA that if convicted, the 83-year-old could face a “substantial prison term, potentially up to a life sentence.”

Yunus has described his treatment by authorities as humiliating, being held in an iron cage during court proceedings. “Any accused person — against whom a case has been filed — is taken to the cage. … As far as I know, the accused is innocent until proven guilty,” he told reporters after appearing at the June 12 indictment hearing and pleading not guilty, “Is that fair?”

Concerns over fair trial

Rights activists and supporters fear that the government might imprison Yunus as part of the legal and political battle against him. Dhaka-based political analyst Zahed Ur Rahman expressed concerns about imprisonment driven by “vengeance” from Hasina.

“From the highest levels of government, including the prime minister, aggressive statements have been made about subjudice matters. She has not held back. Given the state of the law and justice system in the country, Dr. Yunus will not receive fair treatment,” Rahman told VOA.

Yunus’s legal team argues that the embezzlement charges are purely “baseless and frivolous” arguing that for embezzlement to occur, funds must be misappropriated from someone’s custody, which he asserts did not happen.

“The money in question was properly deposited into a bank account as mandated by a settlement agreement between the workers’ trade union and Grameen Telecom, in accordance with labor laws. Thus, there is no basis for embezzlement charges.” Al-Mamun told VOA.

He expressed concern that a fair trial will not be possible, given government participation in a “smear campaign” against Yunus, and expressed fear Yunus would not receive justice even in the highest court.

“We are progressing through each step and will go to the highest court eventually. But sadly, what we have repeatedly seen is that the country’s highest court has not given verdicts independently based on the merits of these cases. It is likely that we will not receive justice this time either. However, we will follow all procedures.”

Hasina’s campaign against Yunus

Tensions between Yunus and Hasina began in 2007 after Yunus proposed forming a political party, Citizens’ Power, to combat corruption and polarization. Though brief, analysts say the move solidified Hasina’s view of Yunus as a rival. Her administration began a series of investigations of Yunus after coming to power in 2008.

“She couldn’t tolerate that Dr. Yunus was viewed as a political alternative. Her jealousy was fueled by his Nobel Prize and the global support he received,” Rahman said.

“Dr. Yunus began to openly criticize the regime, and that has put pressure on the government. These appears to be the motivations behind the campaign to discredit and humiliate him.”

The outside world has expressed significant concern over Yunus’ treatment. Last year, more than 100 Nobel laureates, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, wrote an open letter to Hasina, urging an end to what they describe as “continuous judicial harassment.”

Amnesty International has condemned Yunus’ treatment as emblematic of the broader erosion of human rights in Bangladesh. The United Nations rights body has raised concerns about ongoing harassment and smear campaigns from the “highest levels of government,” which could jeopardize a fair trial.

Despite numerous appeals, Hasina has remained firm. In 2011, her administration ousted Yunus from Grameen Bank, and she has consistently accused him of acting against Bangladesh’s interests. A significant instance is the World Bank’s decision to withdraw funding from the Padma Bridge project, the country’s major infrastructure endeavor and longest bridge. Hasina has attributed this withdrawal to Yunus’ influence, an accusation that he denies.

At a press briefing on June 25 at her residence, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina criticized the open letter signed by more than 100 Nobel laureates and notable individuals supporting Muhammad Yunus as nothing more than “advertisements” funded by Yunus himself.

“He has money, so he can pay for publicity. All these endorsements by Nobel laureates and others are merely promotional efforts. If he truly were so popular, why would he need to resort to advertisements to garner so much support? The whole world would naturally rally behind him otherwise,” she said.

Hasina who often called Yunus a “bloodsucker of the poor” and criticized Grameen’s microlending practices, accused Yunus of taking credit for poverty reduction efforts that she claims her administration achieved, stating that her government reduced poverty significantly over the last 15 years.

“I have eradicated poverty. In the last 15 years, I have reduced it from 41.6% to 18.7%, and he takes the credit. Some international organizations even write that down,” she said.

U.S. keeping wary eye on the trials

The U.S. State Department is closely monitoring the case against Yunus, voicing concerns about potential misuse of Bangladesh’s labor laws to harass him. During a press briefing on July 9, spokesperson Mathew Miller emphasized that such misuse could undermine the rule of law and discourage foreign investment.

“We continue to monitor closely developments in the case against him. We have expressed for some time our concern that these cases may represent a misuse of Bangladesh’s labor laws to harass and intimidate Dr. Yunus,” Miller said. “We also worry that perceived misuse of labor and anti-corruption laws could raise questions about rule of law and dissuade future foreign direct investment.”

Poland Must Prepare Army for Full-Scale Conflict: Army Chief

Poland’s relations with Russia and Russia’s ally Belarus have deteriorated sharply since Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, starting a war that is still being fought.

Warsaw, Poland. Poland needs to prepare its soldiers for all-out conflict, its armed forces chief of staff said this week, as the country boosts the number of troops on its border with Russia and Belarus.

Poland’s relations with Russia and Russia’s ally Belarus have deteriorated sharply since Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into neighboring Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, starting a war that is still being fought.

“Today, we need to prepare our forces for full-scale conflict, not an asymmetric-type conflict,” army chief of staff General Wieslaw Kukula told a press conference.

“This forces us to find a good balance between the border mission and maintaining the intensity of training in the army,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, deputy defense minister Pawel Bejda said that as of August, the number of troops guarding Poland’s eastern border would be increased to 8,000 from the current 6,000, with an additional rearguard of 9,000 able to step up within 48 hours notice.

In May, Poland announced details of “East Shield”, a 10 billion zloty ($2.5 billion) program to beef up defenses along its border with Belarus and Russia, which it plans to complete the plans by 2028.

The border with Belarus has been a flashpoint since migrants started flocking there in 2021 after Belarus opened travel agencies in the Middle East offering a new unofficial route into Europe — a move the European Union said was designed to create a crisis.

Warsaw has ramped up defense spending to more that 4% of its economic output this year in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Kukula also said the current high interest from candidates to join the army posed a dilemma over whether to take in more recruits than budgeted for at the expense of military equipment procurement, especially as he said interest was expected to start declining sharply from 2027.

The size of the armed forces stood at about 190,000 personnel at the end of last year, including ground, air, naval, special forces and territorial defense forces. Poland plans to increase this to 300,000 troops within a few years.

U.N. Demands Immediate End to Russian Aggression in Ukraine

New York, N.Y. The U.N. General Assembly on Thursday demanded that Russia immediately cease its aggression against Ukraine and unconditionally withdraw all military forces from Ukrainian territory.

The Assembly also called for an immediate end to attacks against Ukraine’s critical energy infrastructure, following weeks of escalation.

The resolution entitled Safety and security of nuclear facilities of Ukraine, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was adopted with 99 countries in favor and nine against (Belarus, Burundi, Cuba, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, Russia and Syria). Sixty Member States abstained.

Nuclear demand

The resolution demanded that Russia “urgently withdraw” its military and other unauthorized personnel from the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and “immediately return” the plant to full Ukrainian control – to ensure its safety and security.

“[The Assembly] calls upon the Russian Federation, until it returns the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant…to provide the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia with timely and full access to all areas at the plant that are important for nuclear safety and security in order to allow the Agency to report fully on the nuclear safety and security situation at the site,” the resolution said.

The draft resolution was introduced by Ukraine, and was sponsored more than 50 other countries, including France, Germany and the United States.

Ukraine: Radiation knows no borders

Introducing the text, Ukrainian Ambassador and Permanent Representative Sergiy Kyslytsya said that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been deliberately made an integral element of Russia’s military strategy and warned that the repercussions of an incident there would be catastrophic.

“Radiation knows no borders,” he stated, adding that radioactive fallout can travel great distances and affect regions far removed from the site of the incident.

He said the draft resolution fully supported the mandate of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and reinforces the importance of the seven indispensable pillars of nuclear safety and security outlined by the IAEA Director-General.

He urged all nations to vote in favour the resolution, stressing “we owe it to future generations to ensure that the horrors of nuclear disasters are not repeated.”

Russia: A pseudo nuclear package

Explaining his country’s position before the vote, Russian Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy said the draft resolution was harmful, heavily politicized and had nothing to do with nuclear safety.

“The true goal is to use this pseudo nuclear package to sneak in political elements that have nothing to do with the stated problem, even a cursory glance at the text is enough to make this clear,” he said.

He also said that the sponsors of the draft resolution resorted to non-inclusive and non-transparent methods of work, “flatly refusing” any amendments from a number of delegations that sought to depoliticize it.

He accused Ukraine of being the real threat to nuclear safety and security and carrying out regular and reckless attacks on Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, its related infrastructure and the nearby city where plant employees and their families live.

Gaza Schools Bombed-Out by Israel in Latest Escalation

On Tuesday, at least 25 people were killed after an Israeli strike near a school building sheltering displaced Gazans in eastern Khan Younis, southern Gaza, according to the enclave’s health authorities. On Saturday, another strike left at least 16 dead at an UNRWA school in Nuseirat, central Gaza, followed a day later by a hit on a school in Gaza City that was reportedly sheltering hundreds of people.

New York, N.Y. Amid reports of intensified heavy shelling in north, central and southern Gaza, the head of the UN agency for Palestine refugees, UNRWA, confirmed on Wednesday that schools-turned-shelters have been “bombed-out” as a result of the latest escalation.

Four schools hit in the last four days. Since the war began, two thirds of UNRWA schools in Gaza have been hit, some were bombed out, many severely damaged,” said Philippe Lazzarini, in a post on X.

In a statement posted on Tuesday, the Israeli military said it had been targeting “terrorist infrastructure and terrorist operatives” in Gaza City.

Under fire

On Tuesday, at least 25 people were killed after an Israeli strike near a school building sheltering displaced Gazans in eastern Khan Younis, southern Gaza, according to the enclave’s health authorities.

On Saturday, another strike left at least 16 dead at an UNRWA school in Nuseirat, central Gaza, followed a day later by a hit on a school in Gaza City that was reportedly sheltering hundreds of people.

Further Israeli strikes on Monday were reported on or near an UNRWA school in Nuseirat,  UNRWA Director of Communications Juliette Touma told UN News.

No safe place

“This is becoming commonplace; only in the past four days we’ve seen four schools come under attack,” she said. Every time a school is hit “dozens of people pay the price.”

The UN agency – the largest humanitarian operator in Gaza – closed all of its schools when war erupted on 7 October in response to Hamas-led attacks on multiple targets in southern Israel that left some 1,250 dead and more than 250 taken hostage.

“We’ve turned the vast majority of them into shelters and at some point we had one million people staying in our schools,” Ms. Touma explained, adding that of the casualties from the latest school strikes, “many” were women and children.

Since the war began, more than half of UNRWA’s facilities – the vast majority of them schools – have been hit.

“Some were completely bombed out and are out of commission”, Ms. Touma continued, adding that since the war began, at least 600,000 children have seen their schools close.

Lost generation

“In the case of UNRWA most of them were used as shelters, but what this means is that if this war continues, we are on the verge of losing a whole generation of children,” she continued.

“The longer children stay out of school, the more difficult it is for them to catch up on education losses; the higher the risk that they fall prey to exploitation, including child labour, child marriage, but also recruitment into armed groups, and recruitment into the fighting. So it is for the sake of those children that we must have a ceasefire”.

In response to allegations that the schools were being used by Hamas fighters or affiliates, the UNRWA official insisted that no UN facility should be used for military purposes, before reiterating repeated calls by the Commissioner-General for “independent inquiries and investigations into all these very serious claims”.

“Civilian infrastructure, including schools, including shelters, including other facilities like health, clinics, or hospitals, must be protected at all times, including in times of conflict,” Ms. Touma insisted.

Rising toll

In a related development, the UN sexual reproduction agency, UNFPA, warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to worsen, with “severe suffering” now the norm.

Citing Gazan health authorities, UNFPA said that nearly 38,000 Palestinians have now been killed and more than 87,000 injured, with food, shelter, health and livelihood resources all “critically low”.

Across the enclave some 1.9 million people remain forcibly uprooted by the conflict – often repeatedly – and evacuation orders issued by the Israeli military.

Gazans live in “tents, overcrowded shelters, or on the streets without basic necessities”, the UN agency said, pointing to widespread feelings of hopelessness by people “with little prospect of returning home or ending the conflict”.

Lifesaving supplies blocked

“Severe obstacles” in ensuring that humanitarian aid can reach those who need it continue to hamper the relief operation, the UNFPA situation update noted, listing “crossing point closures and bureaucratic hurdles impeding life-saving assistance”.

Problems associated with the breakdown in law and order in Gaza has also increased theft and violence, endangering humanitarian workers and their operations, according to the U.N. agency.

In addition, doctors continue to report rising numbers of preterm and low-birth-weight babies, “indicators of severe malnutrition exacerbated by stress and fear among pregnant women” UNFPA said, while also highlighting the high risk of gender-based violence (GBV) faced by women and adolescent girls, “particularly those displaced, widowed, or unaccompanied”.

Aid successes

Despite the challenges, UNFPA has distributed essential sexual reproductive health and GBV services in Gaza and the West Bank.

The U.N. agency and partners have also established two maternal health units for emergency births, provided menstrual hygiene products to thousands of women and girls and supported mobile medical points and deployed sexual and reproductive health teams to shelters.

Welcome to Trump Cuntry: Can you Read Me Now?

New York, N.Y.Donald Trump’s followers are a force to be reckoned with, possessing enough influence to potentially transform our nation from a democracy into an autocracy—a monarchy, even, with King Donald at the helm. It’s a mistake to dismiss them from the comfort of our liberal cocoons, our ivory towers, or our Cape Cod retreats. To underestimate their impact is to do so at our country’s peril.

That being said, observing the linguistic landscape shaped by Trump’s supporters can be quite intriguing. The creativity, or lack thereof, in their use of language can be striking. Their rhetorical choices often reflect a disregard for traditional norms of grammar and conceptual integrity.

The terms they coin, the phrases they popularize, and the syntax they employ frequently defy conventional standards, revealing a unique cultural phenomenon. It’s as if the boundaries of language are being redrawn, not always in a coherent or respectful manner, but certainly in a way that captures the attention of anyone attuned to the evolution of public discourse.

Editorial: Joe Biden’s Time Has Sadly Come to Step Aside

0

Biden is fighting a battle he simply cannot win – the relentless march of time.

New York, N.Y. The growing chorus of voices within the Democratic Party calling for his withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race is not just noise – it’s a stark reality check that the party and the nation can no longer ignore.

Biden’s recent debate performance against Donald Trump laid bare the concerns that many have harbored about his age and mental acuity[. At 81, Biden is fighting a battle he simply cannot win – the relentless march of time. While his dedication to public service is commendable, the presidency demands more than just experience; it requires vigor, sharp cognitive function, and the ability to inspire confidence in the electorate.

The stakes in this election are too high to gamble on a candidate who may not be at the top of his game. With crucial issues like climate change, economic stability, and global security hanging in the balance, the Democrats need a standard-bearer who can not only articulate a clear vision for the future but also convince voters they have the energy to see it through.

Moreover, Biden’s continued candidacy risks fracturing the party at a time when unity is paramount. The growing dissent within Democratic ranks, from senators to prominent supporters, threatens to undermine the party’s chances of retaining the White House. A graceful exit now would allow for a smooth transition to a new nominee who could reinvigorate the base and appeal to a broader spectrum of voters.

While there’s no historical precedent for an incumbent president stepping down due to concerns about mental fitness, these are unprecedented times. The future of American democracy may well hinge on this decision. It’s time for Joe Biden to put country over personal ambition and clear the way for new leadership to emerge.

Gavin Newsom: A Visionary Leader for Our Times

New York, N.Y. – As we reflect on the challenges and opportunities facing our nation, it becomes clear that effective leadership is not just about navigating the present, but about envisioning and building a future where all Americans can thrive. In this spirit, we wholeheartedly endorse Gavin Newsom as a leader who embodies the values and vision necessary to guide our country forward.

A Champion for Progressive Values

Gavin Newsom has consistently demonstrated his commitment to progressive values, values that resonate deeply with our own mission of supporting young global leadership and advocating for freedom, equality, and justice. Throughout his career, from his time as Mayor of San Francisco to his current role as Governor of California, Newsom has shown an unwavering dedication to policies that uplift the most vulnerable among us while advancing the cause of human rights.

His bold stance on issues like marriage equality, which he championed long before it became a national consensus, is a testament to his courage and foresight. In a time when many leaders wavered, Newsom stood firm, understanding that true leadership often means taking risks in the name of justice. This commitment to doing what is right, even when it is not politically expedient, is a quality that we greatly admire and one that our nation desperately needs.

Leading with Compassion and Pragmatism

In addition to his progressive values, Gavin Newsom has shown an ability to balance compassion with pragmatism—a rare quality in today’s political landscape. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, demonstrated a keen understanding of the need to protect public health while also addressing the economic challenges faced by millions of Americans.

Newsom’s approach to governance is rooted in empathy, yet grounded in practical solutions. He recognizes that the complexities of our modern world require not just idealism, but also the ability to implement policies that make a tangible difference in people’s lives. Whether it is his efforts to combat climate change, expand healthcare access, or tackle the housing crisis, Newsom’s policies are designed to create lasting change while addressing the immediate needs of his constituents.

A Visionary for the Future

Perhaps most importantly, Gavin Newsom is a leader with a vision for the future—one that aligns with our belief in the importance of nurturing young global leadership. He understands that the challenges we face, from climate change to social inequality, cannot be solved with short-term thinking. Instead, they require a long-term vision and a willingness to invest in the next generation of leaders who will carry the torch forward.

Newsom’s focus on education, innovation, and economic opportunity reflects his commitment to building a future where all Americans have the chance to succeed. He understands that by empowering the youth and ensuring they have the tools and resources needed to lead, we can create a more equitable and prosperous society for all.

Standing Against Censorship and Authoritarianism

In a time when censorship and authoritarianism threaten the very fabric of our democracy, Gavin Newsom has been a steadfast defender of civil liberties and free speech.

His leadership in opposing policies that seek to undermine these fundamental rights has been critical in maintaining the freedoms that our founders envisioned for this nation.

We see in Newsom a leader who not only understands the importance of protecting these freedoms but also recognizes the role that young leaders play in this fight. His efforts to ensure that all voices are heard and that the principles of democracy are upheld are in perfect harmony with our mission to support a free United States of America.

Conclusion

As we look to the future, we believe that Gavin Newsom is the leader our nation needs—one who combines progressive values with pragmatic solutions, compassion with vision, and a commitment to freedom with the courage to act. His leadership represents the best of what America can be, and we are proud to endorse him as a visionary who will guide our country toward a brighter, more just future.

Kamala Harris: An Advocate for Change on the World Stage

In the journey of our nation and the global community, Kamala Harris stands as a beacon of leadership, resilience, and vision. As the first woman, the first Black woman, and the first South Asian woman to hold the office of Vice President of the United States, Harris has shattered numerous glass ceilings. Her life and career exemplify the spirit of perseverance and the power of diversity in driving societal progress.

New York, N.Y. Kamala Harris’s career in public service began as a prosecutor in Alameda County, California. She quickly distinguished herself with her commitment to justice, fairness, and the well-being of the community. Her work as District Attorney of San Francisco and later as the Attorney General of California underscored her dedication to reforming the criminal justice system and fighting for the rights of the marginalized.

Throughout her tenure, we saw Harris take bold steps to address systemic issues within law enforcement and advocate for policies that emphasize rehabilitation over punishment.

Her “Back on Track” initiative, which aimed to reduce recidivism by providing job training and educational opportunities to non-violent offenders, showcased her innovative approach to criminal justice reform.

It was clear that Harris was not just addressing the symptoms of crime but seeking to tackle its root causes.

Her tenure as a U.S. Senator further amplified her influence on a national and international level. In the Senate, Harris was a vocal advocate for healthcare reform, climate action, and immigration reform.

Her incisive questioning in Senate hearings and her ability to articulate complex issues with clarity and compassion earned her respect across the political spectrum. She became known for her fierce advocacy for the Affordable Care Act and her relentless pursuit of policies that would provide better healthcare access to millions of Americans.

As Vice President, Kamala Harris continues to champion the causes that are close to her heart.

Her leadership on the global stage is characterized by a commitment to human rights, democratic values, and multilateral cooperation. Harris’s work in addressing the root causes of migration from Central America, for instance, reflects her understanding that global challenges require holistic and sustainable solutions. By focusing on improving economic opportunities, combating corruption, and enhancing security in the region, Harris is working to create a more stable and prosperous future for all.

In addition to her policy initiatives, Harris’s presence as a global leader is significant in its symbolic power. Her very existence in one of the highest offices in the world sends a powerful message to young girls and women of color everywhere: that they too can aspire to and achieve greatness. This representation is not just about breaking barriers; it is about creating a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

Kamala Harris’s leadership is not limited to her political roles.

Her ability to connect with people, her empathy, and her unwavering belief in the power of community are qualities that resonate deeply with us. She has often spoken about the influence of her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, a breast cancer researcher and civil rights activist, in shaping her values and commitment to service. This personal narrative adds depth to her public persona, reminding us that behind every leader is a story of inspiration and determination.

We are inspired by Kamala Harris’s resilience in the face of adversity. Her ability to navigate and succeed in a male-dominated political landscape is a testament to her strength and tenacity. Harris has faced numerous challenges and criticisms throughout her career, yet she has remained steadfast in her mission to serve the people and uphold the principles of justice and equality.

As we reflect on Kamala Harris’s contributions as a thought leader and global citizen, we recognize the profound impact she has had on our world. Her vision for a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society continues to guide her actions and inspire millions. Harris’s journey reminds us that true leadership is about lifting others up, advocating for the voiceless, and striving for a better future for all.

Kamala Harris is not just a leader; she is a trailblazer whose legacy will endure for generations to come. Her work is far from finished, and we eagerly anticipate the continued positive change she will bring to our nation and the world.

Closed Hospitals, Malnutrition, Heat Leave Gazans Reeling

New York, N.Y. In Gaza, overwhelmed hospitals, soaring temperatures, hunger and a lack of even basic sanitation present an ever more deadly threat to a population under constant attack, U.N. humanitarians warned on Tuesday.

Briefing journalists in Geneva, U.N. World Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said that according to the enclave’s health authorities, 34 people have died of malnutrition and dehydration amid ongoing Israeli bombardment, sparked by Hamas-led terror attacks on 7 October.

Forcibly displaced by Israeli relocation orders, Palestinians take as many belongings as they can, before heading in search of a new place to shelter.

“In [northern Gaza’s] Kamal Adwan hospital alone, 60 cases of severe acute malnutrition were detected last week,” the WHO spokesperson told journalists.

Easy prey for disease

“Malnutrition is definitely one of the factors that reduces the immunity, especially of the vulnerable population, elderly and children, who then can’t really cope with any disease, any pathogen that they can get,” Mr. Jasarevic said, describing a “vicious circle of not having access to enough food, to clean water, to clean sanitation, not having access to basic health services”.

Mr. Jašarević paid tribute to the dedication of health workers who have returned to their facilities once they feel secure enough, to try and get vital services running again. Out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals, only 13 are “partially functioning”, he said.

Health centre reopens

In more positive news, hundreds of Gazans sought help at a newly reopened UN health centre in Khan Younis, six months after it was severely damaged and forced to close due to heavy fighting, the UN agency for Palestine refugees (UNRWA) said on Tuesday.

The UNRWA Japanese Health Center in Khan Younis offers primary healthcare services and houses a pharmacy and medical staff who had previously fled as fighting and Israeli tanks rolled through the streets outside.

“People in Gaza desperately need healthcare, but only a fraction of UNRWA health centres are operational due to the ongoing military operations and damage and destruction of UNRWA facilities,” UNRWA Senior Communications Officer, Louise Wateridge, told UN News. “Less than one-third of our health centres are operational.”

On its first day back up and running, 33 medical staff reported for duty and supported more than 900 patients seeking treatment, she added.

‘Sick people feel relieved’

Among the medical staff at the centre, lab technician Abou Omar described the trauma of having to flee with other Gazans in January as Israeli tanks approached. “I have been working in the Japanese clinic for 20 years…I was in the clinic until the last day. I went through the very bitter and very difficult experience of displacement. Our spirits lifted after we heard that the Japanese clinic is functioning again; sick people feel relieved.”

Today, the centre offers pre and post-natal care and blood tests, treatment for non-communicable diseases and provision of critical outpatient treatment, after the UN agency led efforts to clear broken masonry, glass and bullets from the facility.

Like many UNRWA health facilities, the Japanese health centre operates double-shift rotations to manage the high influx of patients from 8am to 5pm. But referrals to UNRWA-contracted hospitals have become increasingly complex owing to a shortage of electricity and a lack of supplies, said Ms. Wateridge. Today, the agency has 100 temporary medical points and eight out of 26 functional health centres.

Mental health support

As of 26 June, the UN agency provided mental health and psychosocial support services in Gaza’s Middle and Khan Younis areas with teams of psychiatrists and supervisors to assist special cases referred from health centres and shelters.

UNRWA teams responded to 626 cases in health centres and at medical points through individual consultations, offering awareness sessions and support for cases of gender-based violence. The UN agency’s staff also provided medical care for 391 post-natal and pregnant women at high risk.

Insufficient capacity

Total capacity at the six partially functional hospitals in southern Gaza – including three in Deir Al Balah and three in Khan Younis – is just 1,334 beds.

Out of 11 field hospitals in the Gaza Strip, three have had to temporarily shut down and four are only partially functioning, “due to the hostilities in Rafah and reduced access”, WHO said.

Regarding the hospital infrastructure, “the level of destruction is such that it is difficult to even imagine how much time will it take [to rebuild] once the war is over,” Mr. Jašarević stressed.

Tedros slams evacuations

There’s really no safe corner in Gaza,” insisted the Director-General of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, warning in an online post that the latest reports of evacuation orders in Gaza City “will further impede delivery of very limited lifesaving care”.

Al-Ahli and Patient Friendly hospitals are out of service; patients either self-evacuated, were given early discharge or referred to Kamal Adwan and Indonesian hospitals, which are suffering shortage of fuel, beds and trauma medical supplies,” the WHO chief continued.

Indonesian Hospital is triple over its capacity. Al-Helou Hospital is within the blocks of the evacuation order but continues to be partially functional. As-Sahaba and Al-Shifa hospitals are in close proximity to the areas under evacuation order but remain functional so far. Six medical points and two primary health care centers are also within the evacuation zones.”

Nowhere and no-one is safe

Beyond the direct consequences of the Israeli military’s relentless bombardment and shelling which continued overnight into Tuesday, “everyone in Gaza” is at risk of getting sick and dying for lack of care, Mr. Jašarević said.

The situation is particularly dire for pregnant women, people living with chronic diseases such as cancer or diabetes, injured people who are not treated on time and children threatened by waterborne diseases.

He reiterated the agency’s appeal for the opening of all border crossings into the enclave, in order to enable desperately needed medical evacuations.

“More than 10,000 people need to receive specialized medical care outside of Gaza. These people cannot wait,” he insisted.

The flow of medical relief is also at a standstill and the UN health agency said that none of its trucks passed last week into Gaza.

Asked about the current state of health facilities in the Strip, Mr. Jašarević said that hospitals were being either evacuated or destroyed by bombing, with no possibility of rebuilding until the fighting stops.

According to the latest emergency update from the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, within the course of just one week, patients and medical staff evacuated three hospitals in southern Gaza, “in fear of intensified military activities that could render the health facilities non-functional or inaccessible”.

Russia Bombs Ukrainian Children in Kyiv Hospital

At the time of the attack, 670 child patients, mainly inpatients, were at the hospital together with more than 1,000 medical staff. Joyce Msuya, acting undersecretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, said 27 civilians, including four children, reportedly were killed and 117 people, including seven children, were injured.

Geneva, Switzerland. U.N. agencies have condemned a wave of Russian missile attacks Monday on densely populated areas of Ukraine that has killed dozens of people and forced the evacuation of hundreds of children from a hospital in the capital city Kyiv, severely damaged by a probable “direct hit” by a Russian missile.

“Yesterday’s massive missile attacks across Ukraine, including the horrifying strike on Okhmatdyt, Ukraine’s largest children’s referral hospital, once again lay bare the disastrous consequences of the war waged against Ukraine by the Russian Federation,” Volker Türk, high commissioner for human rights said.

Türk who presented his latest report on the situation in Ukraine to the U.N. human rights council Tuesday, said he was “outraged by the sight of children, already so vulnerable in war, suffering the terror of attack while receiving medical treatment.”

He said May saw the highest monthly verified civilian casualty number in nearly a year, with 174 civilians killed and 690 injured because of the Russian ground offensive and aerial strikes.

Speaking from Kyiv Tuesday, Danielle Bell, the head of the U.N. human rights monitoring mission in Ukraine, called the attack on the hospital “one of the most egregious” that we have seen since the onset of the full-scale invasion.

She told journalists in Geneva, “We have assessed the factors and the likelihood that it was a direct hit of a KH101 missile launched by the Russian Federation, which suggests that it was a direct hit.”

“Analysis of the video footage and assessment made at the incident site indicates a high likelihood that the children’s hospital suffered a direct hit rather than receiving damages due to an intercepted weapons system.”

Bell said, “We do not have the competence to make the determination with 100 percent certainty whether it was a direct hit or not,” but added that “our military experts visited the site yesterday and observed damages at the site that were consistent with a direct hit.”

Russia has denied targeting the hospital, claiming it was hit by a Ukrainian air defense missile.

The Okhmatdyt hospital is one of two hospitals in Kyiv that treat children and women that came under fire Monday.

The United Nations reports deadly strikes also hit civilian infrastructure and key energy infrastructure facilities in the cities of Kryvyi Rih, Pokrovsk and Dnipro.

Ukrainian authorities report Russian airstrikes killed at least 41 people and injured more than 190.

“The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is verifying figures while rescue workers, hospital staff and volunteers continue to clear rubble in search for people trapped under debris,” she said.

Monitoring Mission head Danielle Belle said the casualty toll would have been much higher had the staff not moved the children to a bunker Monday morning when the air raid sirens went off.

“The explosion destroyed the toxicology department where children were receiving dialysis only minutes before the missile impacted. The attack also damaged the intensive care, surgical and oncology wards,” she said, emphasizing that 600 children, many suffering from cancer and kidney disease, have been transferred to other hospitals in and around Kyiv.

“This terrible attack shows that nowhere is safe in Ukraine,” Bell said.

Echoing that sentiment, Catherine Russell in a statement Monday said that “Hospitals should be safe havens, and they are afforded a special level of protection under international law.

“Civilians, including children and the facilities and services they rely on, must always be protected,” she said.

Unfortunately, data from the World Health Organization show that far from being protected, civilians are being flagrantly attacked and prevented from receiving health care.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, WHO has verified 1,882 attacks on health care facilities, resulting in 150 deaths, 379 injuries and 1,624 impacted health facilities.

It says 40% of these attacks affected primary health care, impeding Ukrainians from accessing basic health facilities.

“Attacks on health care deprive vulnerable populations of urgently needed care, undermine health systems, and jeopardize long-term public health goals,” WHO spokesperson Tarik Jasarevic said.

“Attacks on civil infrastructure, particularly energy sources and transmission centers, have caused power outages and disruptions in the water supply. This increases the risk of waterborne disease outbreaks and undermines the surveillance system’s ability to detect and respond timely to possible cases of waterborne, foodborne and other infectious diseases,” he said.

In his intervention at the U.N. human rights council, human right chief Türk called on Russia immediately “to cease its use of armed force against Ukraine” and to “scrupulously respect international humanitarian and human rights law.”

“My office will continue meticulously to monitor, document and report on the ground realities of this awful war, including in occupied territory,” he said. “Accountability must be served.”

AOC Introduces Articles of Impeachment Against Supremes

0

U.S. Congressional Representatives Barbara Lee (CA-12), Rashida Tlaib (MI-12), Bonnie Watson Coleman (NJ-12), Delia Ramirez (IL-3), Maxwell Frost (FL-10), Ilhan Omar (MN-5), Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) have Co-sponsored the Articles, endorsed by MoveOn, NextGen America, Women’s March, Take Back The Court and other organizations.

Washington D.C. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) introduced articles of impeachment against U.S. Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

“The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed.

The U.S. Constitution explicitly outlines a higher standard of conduct for the judiciary to meet, far surpassing its existing bars on treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors for all civil officers: the standard of Good Behavior. Judicial ethics and rules, to which even the lowest level judges are held, make those standards clear. The lifetime appointments of Supreme Court justices make enforcement of these standards a solemn responsibility for the protection of our democracy,” said the Congresswoman.

Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law. And their refusal to recuse from the specific matters and cases before the court in which their benefactors and spouses are implicated represents nothing less than a constitutional crisis. These failures alone would amount to a deep transgression worthy of standard removal in any lower court, and would disqualify any nominee to the highest court from confirmation in the first place.

Given the court’s demonstrated inability to preserve its own legitimate conduct, it is incumbent upon Congress to contain the threat this poses to our democracy and the hundreds of millions of Americans harmed by the crisis of corruption unfurling within the court. Congress has a legal, moral, and democratic obligation to impeach,” she continued.

The first impeachment resolution includes the following impeachment articles against Justice Thomas:

  1. Failure to disclose financial income, gifts and reimbursements, property interests, liabilities, and transactions, among other information.
  2. Refusal to recuse from matters concerning his spouse’s legal interest in cases before the court.
  3. Refusal to recuse from matters involving his spouse’s financial interest in cases before the court.

The second impeachment resolution includes the following impeachment articles against Justice Alito:

  1. Refusal to recuse from cases in which he had a personal bias or prejudice concerning a party in cases before the court.
  2. Failure to disclose financial income, gifts and reimbursements, property interests, liabilities, and transactions, among other information.

The Congresswoman maintains that such conduct—while under a Judicial Oath to “faithfully and impartially discharge and perform” duties and a Constitutional Oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”—warrants impeachment, trial, removal from office, and disqualification from holding future office in the United States of America.

On June 11, 2024, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and Congressman Jamie Raskin hosted an oversight roundtable with expert panelists and legislators, including Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), entitled “High Court, Low Standards, and Dark Money: Flagging a Supreme Court Ethics Crisis in America,” to examine corruption on the court.

On June 20, they wrote a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts to learn what immediate action he would take to restore public trust in the Court amidst severe ethical conflicts.
