Xenophobia. A strong fear or dislike of people or things that are perceived as foreign or strange. It’s based on the idea that there’s a conflict between an in-group and an out-group.
The word xenophobia comes from the Greek words xenos, which means “stranger” or “guest”, and phobos, which means “fear” or “flight”. It first appeared in English in the late 19th century.
Some examples of xenophobia include:
- Anti-immigration policies
- Disliking or being hostile towards different cultures
- Assuming that products, foods, or movies from other cultures are inferior to one’s own
The opposite of xenophobia is xenophilia, which is the love for, attraction to, or appreciation of foreign people, manners, customs, or cultures.
