Michelle Wu (b.1985). An American lawyer and politician serving as the 55th Mayor of Boston since November 16, 2021. She is a Democrat.

She is the first woman, first person of color, and first Asian American to be elected to this position. At 36, she was also the youngest individual elected as Boston’s mayor in nearly a century.

Early Life and Education

Wu was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Taiwanese American immigrants. She graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

Political Career

Boston City Council

Wu served on the Boston City Council from 2014 to 2021, becoming the first Asian American woman in this role. She was the council president from 2016 to 2018.

Mayoral Election

Wu announced her candidacy for mayor on September 15, 2020. She won the election on November 2, 2021, with over 64% of the vote, building a multiethnic coalition.

As mayor, Wu has focused on several key areas:

Environment and Climate Change

  • Signed an ordinance to divest city investments from fossil fuels, tobacco products, and prison facilities
  • Pledged $2 billion for a “Green New Deal” for Boston Public Schools
  • Halted the use of fossil fuels in new municipal buildings and major renovations

Transportation

  • Supported fare-free public transportation, funding a pilot program for three MBTA bus routes

Housing and Development

  • Invested in making housing affordable
  • Launched programs to support energy-efficient retrofits in existing buildings

Public Safety

  • Oversaw a decrease in gun violence to record low levels
  • Reached an agreement with the Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association for significant reforms

Education

  • Expanded Boston’s Pre-K and early education programs
  • Increased access to early college and career programs for high school students

Wu’s tenure has been marked by progressive policies and a focus on addressing climate change, affordable housing, and public transportation issues in Boston.
