    University of Texas (Austin). A public research university in Austin, Texas. Founded in 1883, it is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. With 52,384 students as of Fall 2022, it is also the largest institution in the system.

    This school was named in the original list of only eight universities in the 1985 publication by the Yale admissions officer in his term-coining book entitled, Public Ivies: A Guide to America’s Best Public Undergraduate Colleges and Universities: College of William & Mary (Virginia), Miami University (Ohio), University of California, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), University of Texas (Austin), University of Vermont (Burlington), and University of Virginia (Charlottesville).
