San Francisco, California. Officially the City and County of San Francisco, is a commercial, financial, and cultural center in Northern California with a population of 808,437 residents as of 2022. It was founded by Spanish in 1850.

San Francisco Bay was inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years. When the Spanish came, tribes like the Mojave and others who spoke the Yuma language were already living there.

It was the Spanish Jesuits who were the first to set up their famous missions there, 14 in total. In 1767, King Carlos III of Spain ordered the expulsion of the Jesuits from his lands. In 1776, the Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza built the San Francisco prison and founded a mission in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi so the city of San Francisco was born.
