    Mark Rothko (1903–1970). Born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz, was a prominent abstract expressionist painter known for his large-scale color field paintings. His work is characterized by its emotional depth and use of color to convey mood. Rothko’s influence on modern art remains significant, and he attended Brooklyn College.
