Rohingya Genocide. The genocide of the predominately Muslim (Sunni) Rohingya people by military of Myanmar (Tatmadaw). This series of ongoing persecutions and killings of the Muslim Rohingya people has consisted of two phases to date: the first was a military crackdown that occurred from October 2016 to January 2017, and the second has been occurring since August 2017, in the state of Rakhine.
There has been massive destruction of many villages in the genocide. There have been more than 25,000 killed by 2018, with tens of thousands raped; 700,000+ refugees have fled abroad. The motive for this genocide has been anti-Rohingya sentiment, Buddhist nationalism, Islamophobia, and Myanmar ultranationalism.
