Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A mental health condition that develops in some individuals after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Common traumatic events include sexual assault, domestic violence, warfare, natural disasters, and severe accidents.

    Symptoms

PTSD symptoms typically begin within three months of the traumatic event but may not appear until years later. The main symptom categories include:

    1. Intrusive memories: Recurring, unwanted thoughts or nightmares about the traumatic event.
    2. Avoidance: Actively avoiding trauma-related thoughts, feelings, or situations.
    3. Negative changes in thinking and mood: Persistent negative emotions, distorted beliefs, or feeling detached.
    4. Changes in physical and emotional reactions: Heightened startle response, difficulty concentrating, or aggressive behavior.

    Associated Conditions

PTSD often co-occurs with other mental health issues, including depression, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. More than 50% of individuals with PTSD have comorbid conditions.

    Treatment

Effective treatments for PTSD include psychotherapy, medication, or a combination of both. Early intervention can help manage symptoms and improve overall functioning.
