    Pope Francis (#266) (1936-pres.). Argentine. First pope to be born outside Europe since 731 and the first from the Americas; first pope from the Southern Hemisphere. First Jesuit pope. Quote on gays: “Who am I to judge?”

    Noted for his humility, emphasis on God’s mercy, concern for the poor, and commitment to interfaith dialogue. He is credited with having a humble, less formal approach to the papacy than his predecessors and is known for favoring simpler vestments void of ornamentation.

    He maintains that the church should be more open and welcoming. He does not support unbridled capitalism, Marxism, or Marxist versions of liberation theology.

    He opposes consumerism, irresponsible development, and supports taking action on climate change, with the publication of Praise Be to You (Laudato si’.)
