There are 31 rural districts (Kreise), among which are Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis, Gütersloh, Herford, Lippe, Paderborn, and Wesel.
Towns, such as Ennepetal, named after the river Ennepe, which flows through the municipality, or Detmold are located within rural districts (in this case, Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis and Lippe).
