Alexei Navalny (1976 – 2024). The Russian opposition leader, lawyer, and anti-corruption activist known for his criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government, as well as for leading large-scale protests against corruption in Russia. Navalny gained international recognition through his investigations into corruption among Russian elites, often published via his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK).

Early Life and Education

Navalny was born in Butyn, Russia, and later attended the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia, where he earned a law degree. He also studied at Yale University as part of the World Fellows Program.

Political Activism and Anti-Corruption Work

Navalny became widely known in the late 2000s for exposing corruption in major Russian state enterprises and political figures. His blog and social media presence helped mobilize opposition against the ruling party, United Russia, which he famously called the “party of crooks and thieves.”

In 2011–2012, Navalny played a key role in organizing protests against alleged election fraud. He later founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK), which released high-profile investigations into government corruption, including allegations against Putin and his inner circle.

Arrests, Poisoning, and Legal Persecution

Navalny has faced multiple arrests and legal actions, which supporters view as politically motivated. In August 2020, he was poisoned with a nerve agent, Novichok, in an attack widely attributed to Russian security services. After recovering in Germany, he returned to Russia in January 2021, where he was immediately arrested and later sentenced to prison on fraud charges, which he and international observers claim were fabricated.

Navalny was one of the most high-profile political prisoners in Russia. His imprisonment drew widespread condemnation from human rights organizations, Western governments, and the European Court of Human Rights. Protests demanding his release occurred both in Russia and abroad.
