Move Forward Party (MFP), formerly known as the Future Forward Party. A former progressive political party in Thailand advocating for democratic reforms, military accountability, and social equality. Founded in 2018, it has emerged as a major opposition force, particularly popular among younger voters. The party was disbanded in 2020 but reorganized as MFP, continuing its reformist agenda. It is led today by Pita “Tim” Limjaroenrat.
In August 2024, Thailand’s Constitutional Court dissolved the Move Forward Party (MFP) and barred 10 executive members from politics for 10 years, citing the party’s campaign to amend the lèse-majesté law.
History and Formation
The Move Forward Party traced its origins to the Future Forward Party, established by THANATHORN Juangroongruangkit (b. 1978) and Piyabutr Saengkanokkul (b. 1982). The party gained rapid support in the 2019 general election, winning the third-largest share of seats. However, it faced legal challenges, culminating in its dissolution by Thailand’s Constitutional Court in 2020. Rebranded as MFP, it retained much of its original platform, focusing on democratic governance, military reform, and economic equality.
Political Platform
MFP promoted:
- Democratization: Reducing military influence in politics, amending the constitution.
- Social Justice: LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, and minority protections.
- Economic Reform: Addressing income inequality, supporting small businesses.
- Education: Overhauling Thailand’s rigid education system.
The party’s progressive stance drew comparisons to Western left-wing movements but remains rooted in Thai sociopolitical contexts.
Electoral Performance
In the 2023 general election, MFP won the most seats, a historic first for a reformist party. However, establishment forces blocked its leader, PITA Limjaroenrat (b. 1980), from becoming Prime Minister. Despite this, MFP remains a dominant opposition voice.

Leadership
Key figures included:
- PITA Limjaroenrat (Leader, 2023 election PM candidate)
- CHAITHAWAT Tulathon (Secretary-General)
- Former leader THANATHORN Juangroongruangkit (now banned from politics
Public Perception
MFP enjoys strong youth support but faces skepticism from older, conservative voters. Its use of social media and grassroots campaigns has reshaped Thai politics.
International Relations
MFP aligns with global democratic movements but maintains a non-interventionist foreign policy stance.
