Zohran Kwame Mamdani (b.1991). An American politician and New York State Assemblymember representing the 36th District, which includes Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway, and Astoria Heights in Queens. Born in Kampala, Uganda, he moved to New York City at the age of seven. Mamdani is the first South Asian man, the first Ugandan, and one of only three Muslim lawmakers to serve in the New York State Legislature.
Early Life and Education
Mamdani attended the Bronx High School of Science and later earned a degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018. His upbringing and experiences as an immigrant shaped his commitment to social justice and public service.
Career Before Politics
Before entering politics, Mamdani worked as a foreclosure prevention counselor, assisting low-income homeowners in Queens to fight eviction. He also explored creative pursuits such as filmmaking and rapping. His work with vulnerable communities inspired him to address systemic inequalities through political action.
Political Career
Mamdani was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 after defeating a four-term incumbent. A member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), he champions progressive policies such as statewide rent control, single-payer healthcare, fare-free public transit, and ending mass incarceration.
He has also been a strong advocate for immigrant rights, food security, and affordable housing. Notably, he played a key role in securing $450 million in debt relief for New York City taxi medallion owners and spearheaded initiatives like fare-free bus programs and increased subway funding.
Advocacy and Legislative Achievements
Mamdani has introduced legislation addressing diverse issues:
- Raising the minimum wage to $30/hour by 2030.
- Increasing taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers to fund universal childcare, tuition-free public colleges, and improved public transit.
- Advocating for Middle Eastern and North African representation in census data.
- Supporting Palestinian rights through bills like “Not on Our Dime,” which aims to end funding for Israeli settler violence.
Mayoral Campaign
In 2025, Mamdani launched a grassroots campaign for New York City mayor. His platform focuses on housing justice, transit equity, and combating food insecurity through city-owned grocery stores. Known for his innovative use of social media, he has mobilized thousands of volunteers and raised significant funds to challenge the political status quo.
