Jewish Poles. Polish citizens of Jewish origin known as Polish Jewry. The contemporary Polish Jewish community is estimated to have between 10,000 and 20,000 members.
During the German occupation of Poland by the Nazis, approximately 1,700,000 Jews were murdered in death and concentration camps.
Jews had lived in Poland for 800 years before the Nazi occupation. On the eve of the occupation 3.3 million Jews lived in Poland – more than any other country in Europe. Their percentage among the general population – about 10% – was also the highest in Europe.
