Indivisible. Indivisible is a grassroots movement in the United States, comprising thousands of local groups, with a mission to elect progressive leaders, strengthen American democracy, and oppose the authoritarian political agenda associated with President Donald Trump.
Founded in 2016, the organization emerged in response to the political climate following the U.S. presidential election, aiming to empower communities through advocacy, civic engagement, and political organizing.
“We fight on, together. Our democracy is under threat. But we will not yield to fascism. We will stand together and we’ll fight back in defense of our rights, our communities, and our values.”
Mission and Activities
Indivisible stated mission focuses on three core goals: electing progressive leaders, rebuilding democratic institutions, and countering policies tied to the Trump administration. The movement operates through a decentralized network of local groups, which engage in activities such as voter outreach, candidate endorsements, issue-based advocacy, and organizing protests or town hall events.
The organization emphasizes collective action, encouraging members to defend democratic values, protect community rights, and promote inclusive policies.

In its public statements, Indivisible has highlighted concerns about threats to democracy, advocating for resistance against authoritarianism and the preservation of civil liberties.
A notable quote from the movement encapsulates its resolve: “We fight on, together. Our democracy is under threat. But we will not yield to fascism. We will stand together and we’ll fight back in defense of our rights, our communities, and our values.”
History
Indivisible was established by former congressional staffers, including Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin, who published the Indivisible Guide in December 2016.
The guide, initially a Google document, outlined strategies for grassroots activism, drawing inspiration from Tea Party tactics to influence elected officials. The movement quickly grew, with local groups forming across the country. By 2017, Indivisible had become a prominent force in progressive politics, contributing to efforts during the 2018 and 2020 elections.
Structure
The movement operates as a network of independent local groups, supported by a national organization, Indivisible Project, which provides resources, training, and strategic guidance. These groups vary in size and focus, addressing local and national issues such as healthcare, immigration, climate change, and voting rights.
The national organization also engages in policy advocacy and coordinates campaigns to influence federal and state legislation.
Impact and Criticism
Indivisible has been credited with mobilizing voters and influencing progressive electoral outcomes, particularly in the 2018 midterm elections. Its focus on grassroots organizing has inspired similar movements and amplified progressive voices in policy debates.
