The Franciscan Order. A group of Catholic religious orders that follow the Rule of St. Francis of Assisi. The order was founded in 1209 by the Italian saint Francis of Assisi, who lived from 1182 to 1226. The Franciscans are known for their ideals of poverty and charity, and their members are often called Franciscan Friars.
