T.S. Eliot. Luce Index™ rank 94. Thomas Stearns Eliot OM was a poet, essayist and playwright. He is considered to be one of the 20th century’s greatest poets, as well as a central figure in English-language Modernist poetry. His use of language, writing style, and verse structure reinvigorated English poetry.
T.S. Eliot’s sexuality has never been settled, historically. In fact, Eliot publicly denied being gay, then burned nearly all letters that might have contradicted this. A biography of Eliot’s first wife, Vivienne, claims the poet was a ‘closet homosexual.’
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he died in London.
