Dudley Gates (Harvard University)
The Dudley Gates were a set of gates that once stood in Harvard Yard, named after Thomas Dudley, a colonial magistrate and governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Erected in 1915, it was torn down in 1947 to make way for the construction of Lamont Library. The gate bore an inscription written by Dudley’s daughter, the poet Anne Bradstreet. Thomas Dudley was one of the founders of Harvard College, serving on the committee that established the college in 1637. He later signed the college's charter as governor in 1650 and served as an overseer for many years.
