    Capt. James Delano (18xx-xx).

American sea captain and trader who is best known for his role in an encounter with a group of shipwrecked slaves that later became the basis for a famous novella. Delano came from a prominent seafaring family in Massachusetts. He began his maritime career as a sailor and eventually rose through the ranks to become a ship captain. In the early 19th century, Delano captained a ship that encountered a group of shipwrecked slaves off the coast of South America. This encounter was later fictionalized by Herman Melville in his 1855 novella “Benito Cereno”, which explored themes of slavery and deception.
