Chickenshed. A pioneering inclusive theatre organization founded in London, England in 1974, by Jo Collins and Mary Ward. Known globally for its commitment to accessibility and diversity, Chickenshed operates on the principle that theatre changes lives when everyone is included.
The company began humbly in a disused chicken shed offered by Lady Elizabeth Byng, evolving into the world’s first truly inclusive theatre with the addition of John Bull as Managing Director. High-profile supporters included Princess Diana as patron and Dame Judi Dench.
In 2016, Elaine Finkletaub brought the model to New York City as Chickenshed NYC, offering programs for ages 3–18+ and outreach partnerships.
