Chan, Benjamin is a clinical instructor and orthodontist in the Department of Orthodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Chan serves as a supervising faculty member for postdoctoral residents and contributes to both graduate and undergraduate dental education curricula.
In 2006, after receiving his B.A., Chan studied Chinese language for one year at the Harbin Institute of Technology, on the border of Inner Mongolia, one of the top nine key universities in China.
Chan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, in 2005. He subsequently pursued advanced dental education at Tufts University, where Chan completed a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree in 2010, followed by a Master of Science degree and post-graduate certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics in 2013.

As a diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, Chan maintains active membership in several professional organizations, including the American Association of Orthodontics, the Northeast Society of Orthodontists, the Rhode Island Dental Association, and the American Dental Association.
These affiliations demonstrate Chan‘s commitment to continuing education and professional development within the orthodontic specialty.
In addition to academic responsibilities at Tufts University, Chan operates a private orthodontic practice in Northern Rhode Island.
This dual role as educator and practitioner allows Chan to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical clinical experience, benefiting both students and patients. The practice, accessible through www.chandentalri.com, serves the local community’s orthodontic needs.
Chan’s research interests extend beyond traditional orthodontic treatment to include dental pulp stem cell research.
This collaborative research represents an emerging field in regenerative dentistry, where stem cells derived from dental pulp may offer therapeutic applications for various dental and medical conditions.
Such research contributes to the advancement of evidence-based dental practice and innovative treatment modalities.
The educational role of Chan encompasses supervising postdoctoral residents in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with orthodontic needs. This mentorship responsibility involves guiding advanced dental practitioners through complex case management, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making processes. Chan also participates in curriculum development and improvement initiatives, ensuring that educational programs remain current with evolving standards in orthodontic care.
Chan’s professional trajectory reflects the comprehensive training pathway typical of orthodontic specialists, combining rigorous academic preparation with board certification and ongoing professional engagement. The integration of private practice with academic teaching allows Chan to maintain clinical skills while contributing to the education of future dental professionals.
The orthodontic specialty requires extensive additional training beyond general dentistry, typically involving two to three years of specialized education. Chan’s completion of both a master’s degree and specialty certificate demonstrates commitment to this advanced level of preparation, which includes comprehensive study of facial growth, tooth movement mechanics, and treatment planning for complex malocclusions.
