Caligula (1979 Film) – An erotic historical drama film depicting the rise and fall of Roman Emperor Caligula. Directed initially by Tinto Brass and later heavily edited by producer Bob Guccione, the film stars Malcolm McDowell in the title role, alongside Peter O’Toole, Helen Mirren, and John Gielgud.

The narrative follows Caligula’s ascent to power after the death of Emperor Tiberius, his controversial reign marked by political intrigue, violence, and sexual excess, and ultimately his assassination.
The film is notable for its explicit content, graphic violence, and portrayal of decadence in ancient Rome, which sparked significant controversy upon release.
Despite—or because of—its notoriety, Caligula has remained a subject of debate among critics and audiences, with some viewing it as a bold artistic statement and others criticizing its sensationalism and lack of coherence.
In 2023, “Caligula: The Ultimate Cut,” a restored version featuring previously unseen footage, was released to renewed critical attention.
