Gurbanguly Mälikgulyýewiç Berdimuhamedow (born 1957). A Turkmen politician who served as the President of Turkmenistan from 2006 to 2022. After stepping down, he remained a central figure in Turkmen politics as the Chairman of the People’s Council (Halk Maslahaty) and continues to influence the nation’s governance.
Early Life and Education
Berdimuhamedow was born in Babarap, Turkmen SSR, Soviet Union (now Turkmenistan). He studied dentistry at the Turkmen State Medical Institute, later working as a dentist before transitioning into government service in the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry.
Political Career
Berdimuhamedow rose to prominence under President Saparmurat Niyazov, serving as Minister of Health and Deputy Prime Minister. Following Niyazov’s death in December 2006, he assumed power, consolidating his rule through elections widely regarded as undemocratic.
As president, he implemented economic reforms, promoted natural gas exports, and fostered cultural nationalism. However, his tenure was marked by strict authoritarian rule, human rights violations, censorship, and political repression. His government cultivated a personality cult, with state media frequently glorifying his leadership.
In 2022, he transferred the presidency to his son, Serdar Berdimuhamedow, yet retained significant control over Turkmenistan’s policies.
Personality Cult and Public Image
Like his predecessor, Berdimuhamedow cultivated a strongman image, often engaging in sports, equestrian activities, and musical performances to project vitality. His government tightly controls media, internet access, and political opposition.
Legacy
Despite Turkmenistan’s vast natural gas reserves, economic hardship and lack of freedoms remain key challenges. Berdimuhamedow‘s leadership is characterized by authoritarianism, economic centralization, and an emphasis on national identity. His continued influence ensures that Turkmenistan remains under the firm grip of his family’s rule.
