Belarus. Officially the Republic of Belarus, is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe. It’s bordered by Russia to the east and northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest.
Belarus is the 13th largest country in continental Europe and the 84th largest in the world. As of 2023, the population was 9.2 million, making it the 97th most populated country in the world.
Belarus’s history dates to the 10th century CE and it was formerly known as Belorussia or White Russia. Before gaining independence in 1991, it was the smallest of the three Slavic republics in the Soviet Union, along with Russia and Ukraine.
Belarus is known for its castles, nature, and Soviet heritage. The country’s terrain is generally flat with lots of marshland, and its natural resources include timber, peat deposits, oil, natural gas, granite, and more. Belarus’s top exports include potash fertilizers, refined petroleum, rapeseed oil, sawn wood, and tractors.
