American Civil War (“The War Between The States” or the “U.S. Civil War”). This war was waged between the Union and the Confederacy, which was formed in 1861 by states that had seceded from the Union. This was the North-South divide. It lasted four years, from April 12, 1861 to April 9, 1865 and resulted in 828,000 Union deaths and 864,000 Confederate deaths.

The Red StateBlue State divide of modern day America correlates to this split.
