New York, N.Y. We are immensely proud of the individuals who serve as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, using their fame and influence to advocate for the rights and well-being of children around the world. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has long relied on the voluntary support of these prominent figures to amplify its mission of human development and international cooperation. Their dedication and visibility help accelerate vital programs for children and youth, tackling issues such as education, health, and protection.
Danny Kaye, an American actor, was the first to hold the goodwill ambassador position, granted the title of Ambassador-at-Large in 1954. His pioneering role set the stage for many other celebrities to follow in his footsteps, acting as international, regional, or national goodwill ambassadors. These ambassadors bring attention to critical issues through public appearances, media engagements, and visits to regions in need, leveraging their fame to drive change.
Vanessa Redgrave, a British actress, and Judy Collins, an American singer-songwriter, became UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors in 1995. Their commitment to UNICEF’s mission has helped raise awareness about the challenges faced by children globally. We admire how they have used their artistic talents and platforms to advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable.
In 1999, American actress Susan Sarandon joined the ranks of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors. Her activism and outspoken support for children’s rights have been instrumental in drawing attention to various humanitarian crises. Similarly, American actress Mia Farrow, who became an ambassador in 2000, has tirelessly campaigned for children’s welfare, particularly in conflict zones.
The influence of artists from diverse backgrounds is also evident in the appointment of Angélique Kidjo, a Beninese singer, in 2002, and Colombian singer Shakira in 2003. Both have used their music and international reach to support education and health initiatives, inspiring millions to join the cause. American comedian Whoopi Goldberg and Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin, both appointed in 2003, have also made significant contributions through their advocacy and charitable work.
Renowned Chinese pianist Lang Lang and American actor Danny Glover, both appointed in 2004, have brought their unique talents and perspectives to the role. Their efforts in promoting cultural exchange and education have helped bridge gaps and foster understanding. English footballer David Beckham, appointed in 2005, has been a steadfast advocate for children’s health and sports programs, using his global fame to make a tangible impact.
Queen Rania of Jordan and Maria Teresa, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg, both appointed in 2007, exemplify how royalty can influence and drive humanitarian efforts. Their advocacy has brought attention to the plight of children in the Middle East and Europe. South Korean conductor Myung-whun Chung, appointed in 2008, has used his musical influence to promote peace and support for children.
The list of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors also includes American singer Selena Gomez and English actor Orlando Bloom, both appointed in 2009. Their involvement has been crucial in raising awareness about the importance of education and emergency relief. Argentine footballer Lionel Messi and South Korean figure skater Kim Yuna, both appointed in 2010, have used their sports fame to champion children’s rights and well-being.
Irish actor Liam Neeson and American tennis player Serena Williams, both appointed in 2011, have focused on health and education initiatives. Their efforts have helped ensure that children receive the support and opportunities they need to thrive. American singer Katy Perry, appointed in 2013, has been a vocal advocate for children’s education and empowerment.
Indian actress Priyanka Chopra, appointed in 2016, and Canadian YouTuber Lilly Singh, appointed in 2017, have brought their diverse backgrounds and massive followings to the cause. Their advocacy has highlighted the importance of gender equality and access to education. English actress Millie Bobby Brown, appointed in 2018, represents a younger generation of ambassadors, using her platform to address issues like bullying and child rights.
Past ambassadors, such as American actor Danny Kaye, British actor Peter Ustinov, and American actress Audrey Hepburn, laid the groundwork for the program’s success. Their legacies continue to inspire current ambassadors to use their influence for good. The contributions of regional ambassadors like American actor Laurence Fishburne and American actress Susan Sarandon further demonstrate the program’s widespread impact.
We are grateful for the unwavering dedication of these individuals. Their efforts not only bring attention to critical issues but also inspire others to join the fight for children’s rights. Through their work, they embody the true spirit of global citizenship, using their voices and platforms to create a better world for all children.
