New York, N.Y. — Donald Trump’s followers are a force to be reckoned with, possessing enough influence to potentially transform our nation from a democracy into an autocracy—a monarchy, even, with King Donald at the helm. It’s a mistake to dismiss them from the comfort of our liberal cocoons, our ivory towers, or our Cape Cod retreats. To underestimate their impact is to do so at our country’s peril.
That being said, observing the linguistic landscape shaped by Trump’s supporters can be quite intriguing. The creativity, or lack thereof, in their use of language can be striking. Their rhetorical choices often reflect a disregard for traditional norms of grammar and conceptual integrity.
The terms they coin, the phrases they popularize, and the syntax they employ frequently defy conventional standards, revealing a unique cultural phenomenon. It’s as if the boundaries of language are being redrawn, not always in a coherent or respectful manner, but certainly in a way that captures the attention of anyone attuned to the evolution of public discourse.
