Playing For Change co-founder Mark Johnson discovered the New Orleans icon in 2005, leading to worldwide recognition and a memorial in Congo Square
New York, N.Y. – In the heart of the French Quarter, at the corner of Royal and Toulouse, a musical legend was born. With his soulful voice and spirited harmonica, Grandpa Elliott Small captivated audiences for decades before being discovered by Playing For Change co-founder Mark Johnson in 2005.

From Street Corner to World Stage
Johnson had traveled to New Orleans specifically seeking Grandpa Elliott, having heard of his reputation and influence within the local community. Johnson believed Elliott’s unique voice would be perfect for the Song Around The World project “Stand By Me.”
“We made our way over to Royal and Toulouse, and found him entertaining a crowd on the corner,” Johnson recalled. “While he was on a set break, we approached him and struck up a conversation and introduced ourselves and the project.”

That chance meeting would transform Elliott’s life, taking him from the streets of New Orleans to international acclaim. In 2009, he joined the PFC Band and performed in over 25 countries, receiving a rockstar’s welcome everywhere he went.
“Wherever Grandpa went, people would treat him like Elvis,” Johnson said. “We traveled everywhere and people would show up and just wanted to touch him and give him love and he was so kind to give it back,” added Peter Bunetta, another PFC member.
Musical Ambassador and Spiritual Guide
Grandpa Elliott wasn’t just known for his musical talents. His wisdom, kindness, and philosophy resonated with everyone he met, making him a beloved figure within the Playing For Change movement.
“Grandpa was definitely full of advice, not only musical advice, but also life advice,” said fellow musician Roberto Luti.
One particularly moving experience came when the PFC Band visited the children’s oncology sector at Erasto Gaertner Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil. Despite the emotionally challenging environment, Grandpa performed with his characteristic energy and passion.
“Right at that time I started to understand the power that music has to make positive changes in people’s lives,” recalled band member Alan Eccel. “We all learned a big lesson that day: to deal with life and all of its problems without complaining.”

Legacy of Love and Music
Grandpa Elliott’s philosophy on performing was simple yet profound:
“When I see others love what I do, I love it more, it’s a nice feeling…everybody loves you and I love everybody.”
His impact was so significant that on April 20, 2022, the residents of New Orleans celebrated his legacy by inaugurating a memorial in Congo Square, a historic gathering place for African American music and culture in the city.
“Grandpa Elliott changed the world from the inside out because he changed hearts, he made people care more and have a better life, and I think that’s the best gift that you can give,” Johnson reflected.
“He lives in our hearts and in our souls forever, we love you grandpa.”
Musical Transformation Through Human Connection
Playing For Change, founded by Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, began as a multimedia project to connect musicians from around the world. The organization has since grown into a movement dedicated to inspiring and connecting people through music.
Grandpa Elliott became one of the most recognizable faces of this movement, embodying its mission through his genuine love for people and music. His participation in the viral “Stand By Me” video helped introduce millions of viewers to the Playing For Change concept.

For those wishing to experience Grandpa Elliott’s musical legacy, his exclusive album “Sugar Sweet” remains available through the Playing For Change website.
Whether remembered for his distinctive blues harmonica, his soulful singing, or his gentle wisdom, Grandpa Elliott Small’s impact continues to resonate globally as a testament to how music can unite people across cultural, geographic, and social boundaries.
