Popemobile Becomes Health Clinic for Gaza, Honoring Pope

The late pontiff’s final wish transforms his iconic vehicle into a mobile clinic, delivering vital care and hope to Gaza’s most vulnerable children.

New York, N.Y. – In a move that blends humanitarian action with powerful symbolism, the late Pope Francis’s popemobile — the vehicle that once carried him through the Holy Land — will soon serve as a mobile health clinic for children in the Gaza Strip.

This initiative, one of the pontiff’s last requests before his death on April 21, 2025, is being carried out by Caritas Jerusalem, a Catholic aid organization entrusted with the project in the final months of his life.

Fulfilling a Final Wish

Pope Francis’s dedication to the Palestinian people was well documented throughout his papacy. In his final months, he specifically asked that the popemobile used during his 2014 pilgrimage to the region be converted to serve Gaza’s children, who face acute risks due to the ongoing Israel invasion. The vehicle, a modified Mitsubishi originally gifted by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, is being retrofitted with medical equipment, including diagnostic tools, vaccines, rapid infection tests, and suture kits.

Caritas Jerusalem will staff the clinic with doctors and paramedics, ready to deploy as soon as humanitarian access to Gaza is restored. “This is a concrete, life-saving intervention at a time when the health system in Gaza has almost completely collapsed,” said Peter Brune, Secretary General of Caritas Sweden.

Healthcare Amid Humanitarian Emergency

Gaza’s health infrastructure has been devastated by more than 18 months of conflict, with Israel’s military campaign following the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attacks. The region’s hospitals and clinics have suffered severe damage, and humanitarian aid has been repeatedly restricted, leaving nearly one million children displaced and many without access to basic medical care.

The popemobile-turned-clinic is designed to reach children who are injured, malnourished, or otherwise unable to access healthcare. Equipped with blast-proof windows and staffed by medical professionals, the vehicle will deliver essential services directly to communities most in need.

A Message to the World

Beyond its practical function, the mobile clinic stands as a symbol of Pope Francis’s long-held commitment to peace and justice for Palestinians. Throughout his papacy, Francis was vocal in his support for Gaza’s civilians, frequently condemning violence and advocating for humanitarian relief. He maintained nightly contact with Gaza’s only Catholic church, even while hospitalized, and repeatedly called for ceasefires and investigations into the conflict’s toll on civilians.

“This vehicle represents the love, care, and closeness shown by His Holiness for the most vulnerable,” said Anton Asfar, Secretary General of Caritas Jerusalem. The Vatican described the initiative as a signal that “the world has not forgotten about the children in Gaza.”

Challenges and Next Steps

The transformation of the popemobile into a mobile clinic is expected to take several weeks. Caritas Jerusalem is currently awaiting permission from Israeli authorities to enter Gaza with the vehicle. Once operational, the clinic will provide rapid response in areas where healthcare facilities are no longer functioning, offering hope and tangible support to children in crisis.
