Luce’s connection to Guyana began through an unexpected friendship in New York. During their frequent visits to the city, Janet and Cheddi Jagan—both pivotal figures in Guyanese history—would call on his mentor, Betty Millard. Through these encounters, he came to know the Jagans personally and, through them, met Bharrat Jagdeo, who would later become one of Guyana’s longest-serving leaders. All three—Cheddi, Janet, and Bharrat—served as President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, guiding the nation through crucial periods of its post-independence development. These relationships eventually led him to travel to Guyana, where he met with then-President Jagdeo and former President Janet Jagan to discuss establishing an interracial, interfaith orphanage outside Georgetown—a project that reflected the country’s complex social fabric and its aspirations for unity. The essays collected here span more than two decades of reflection on Guyana’s political legacy, cultural vibrancy, and the forces that have shaped this South American nation’s turbulent journey toward self-determination.
