Elevating Jiu-Jitsu Hygiene: Mission to Keep Grapplers Clean

New York entrepreneur Nelson Duque brings natural, plant-based soap solutions to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community, promoting health, respect, and sustainability in every gym.

New York, N.Y. – In the heart of the martial arts world, hygiene is more than a personal habit-it’s a pillar of respect and safety. Nelson Duque, founder of Be The Undisputed, is on a mission to transform how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) athletes approach cleanliness, offering handcrafted, plant-based soaps designed to protect skin and foster a culture of care on and off the mats.

Who Is Nelson Duque?

Nelson Duque is not just a designer and entrepreneur; he is a passionate advocate for athlete wellness and a recognized leader in youth empowerment. Based in New York City, Duque brings a background in industrial design and a commitment to innovation through his company, Be The Undisputed (betheundisputed.com).

“I have known Nelson for more than a decade and used his products in my own home for more than a year. Both are outstanding in every way. The integrity of his company is an inspiration to the entrepreneurial community. It has been a pleasure watching Nelson flourish – now with wife and son. This BJJ champion rules.” – Jim Luce, president, James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation, New York

As one of the first Young Global Leaders of the J. Luce Foundation, Duque exemplifies integrity and forward-thinking leadership, channeling his expertise into products that serve the unique needs of martial artists.

Born in Colombia, Duque excelled in athletics and taekwondo, winning championships that earned him recognition from his hometown mayor’s office as an ‘Outstanding Youth.’ Seeking new opportunities, he emigrated to the U.S., where he graduated as an Industrial Designer from Pratt Institute and studied psychology. He has competed internationally.

What Is Be The Undisputed?

Be The Undisputed is a Jiu-Jitsu soap company dedicated to helping athletes train hard while maintaining high standards of hygiene. The company’s mission is simple yet impactful: to elevate pre- and post-training hygiene by offering natural, plant-based soaps with antibacterial and antifungal properties, specifically formulated for grapplers and martial artists.

Each soap bar is crafted in small batches using ingredients like calendula, tea tree, and eucalyptus-plants celebrated for their ability to fight bacteria and fungi while soothing and moisturizing the skin. Free from harsh chemicals, parabens, and artificial fragrances, these products are designed to support skin health and promote sustainable sourcing, ensuring that athletes can care for themselves and the planet.

Why Hygiene Matters in Jiu-Jitsu

Hygiene in BJJ is not just about personal comfort-it’s about safeguarding the health of everyone on the mats.

With close physical contact and shared equipment, infections can spread rapidly if cleanliness is neglected.

Common skin issues like staph, ringworm, and MRSA are real threats in the grappling community, making post-training showers, clean gear, and personal grooming essential habits.

“Coming to class clean shows respect for your partners, and showering after helps wash off any bacteria you picked up on the mats,” notes a leading BJJ hygiene resource.

Consistent hygiene routines protect both individual athletes and their training partners, fostering a positive, welcoming environment where everyone can train safely and confidently.

How Be The Undisputed Sets a New Standard

Duque’s approach goes beyond soap. Be The Undisputed is committed to education and advocacy, encouraging both beginners and advanced practitioners to model good hygiene and help create a culture of cleanliness and respect in the gym. The company’s products are:

  • Plant-based and sustainably sourced: Oils are extracted with fairness to farmers and wildlife in mind, ensuring deforestation-free and fully traceable sourcing.
  • Free from harsh chemicals: No GMOs, parabens, detergents, or artificial colors and fragrances, making them suitable for sensitive skin.
  • Handcrafted in small batches: Each bar is made with care to maintain quality and potency.
  • Infused with proven natural ingredients: Calendula offers anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits, while tea tree and eucalyptus provide additional antimicrobial protection and a refreshing scent.

When and Where to Level Up Your Hygiene

Whether you’re a white belt stepping onto the mats for the first time or a gym owner responsible for dozens of athletes, prioritizing hygiene is crucial every day, in every training session. Duque’s message is clear: “Good hygiene is everyone’s responsibility. It’s how we show respect for ourselves, our partners, and the art we practice.”

Building Better Habits for a Healthier Community

The habits that keep athletes healthy are simple but powerful:

  • Shower immediately after training.
  • Wear clean gear for every session.
  • Trim nails and avoid training when sick.
  • Use quality, antibacterial soap designed for athletes’ needs.

By making these steps routine, practitioners not only protect themselves but also contribute to a safer, more respectful training environment.
