Vishnu. A Hindu god and a member of the Hindu triumvirate, or Trimurti, along with Brahma and Shiva:

    • Brahma: The creator of the universe
    • Shiva: The destroyer of the universe
    • Vishnu: The preserver and protector of the universe

Vishnu is the supreme god in the largest Hindu denomination, Vaishnavism, and is considered by his worshippers to be the greatest god. He is the protector of dharma, or moral order, and restores balance between good and evil. Vishnu is believed to have descended to earth in various incarnations, or avatars, to fight demons and maintain cosmic harmony. His most important human incarnation is Krishna, as described in the Bhagavad-Gita.

Vishnu is often depicted in royal garments, holding a conch, discus, club, or lotus in his hands. He is also known by the names Narayana and Hari. Vishnu is married to Lakshmi, the goddess of good fortune, and Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom.
