Dick Gregory (1932-2017, age 84). An American comedian, actor, writer, activist and social critic. His writings were best sellers. Gregory became popular among the African American communities in the southern U.S. with his “no-holds-barred” sets, poking fun at the bigotry and racism in America.
Gregory‘s autobiography published in 1964 was titled Nigger. It has sold more than one million copies to date and has never been out of print since its publication. The book was written during the Civil Rights Movement. Gregory comments on his choice of title in the book’s primary dedication, addressing his late mother, “Dear Momma — Wherever you are, if ever you hear the word “nigger” again, remember they are advertising my book.”
Born in St. Louis, Missouri and died in Washington, D.C. He was married to Lillian Gregory and has a son Richard Gregory, Jr.
