Rockefeller Republicans vs. Donald Trump’s MAGA Forces

New York, N.Y. Rockefeller Republicans, a faction of the Republican Party that emerged in the mid-20th century, were known for their moderate to liberal views on social and economic issues. They supported government intervention in the economy, social welfare programs, and environmental protection. Donald Trump, the 45th President of the United States, represents a stark contrast to Rockefeller Republicans. He is a conservative populist who has implemented policies that favor deregulation, tax cuts for the wealthy, and a reduction in the size of government.

In the Not-so-distant Past, Rockefeller Republicans (including Eisenhower, Reagan, Nixon, Bush Sr., Bush Jr.):

• Believed in a strong role for government in the economy and society
• Supported social welfare programs such as Social Security and Medicare
• Advocated for environmental protection and conservation
• Supported international cooperation and diplomacy
• Believed in a moderate foreign policy

Donald Trump, on the Other Hand:

• Believes in a limited role for government in the economy and society
• Has implemented tax cuts that primarily benefit the wealthy
• Has rolled back environmental regulations
• Has pursued an “America First” foreign policy that emphasizes unilateralism and protectionism

As a Democrat who dislikes Rockefeller Republicans but views MAGA Republicans as an existential threat to our democracy, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles within our political system. In 1992, Hank Luce and Larry Rockefeller bankrolled our attempt to identify Rockefeller Republicans to support a primary challenge to then-incumbent U.S. Senator Alfonse D’Amato. I would have been the candidate if we could muster support. We could not. But I experienced so much on the front lines of our political system.

This experience highlighted the vast differences within the Republican Party and underscored the importance of moderate voices in preserving the democratic values that we hold dear. The stark contrast between the ideals of Rockefeller Republicans and the agenda of Donald Trump’s MAGA movement demonstrates the shifting landscape of American politics and the need for vigilance in protecting our democracy.
