West Africa is the westernmost region of Africa, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south. The United Nations defines West Africa as 16 countries:
Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, CĂ´te D’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo
